RE: Post Box Expansion
12:18 PM EDT 8/6/08 as a reply to Bob Watson.
Hi Bob,
The site was optimized for 1024 x 768 browser size, so that it would not require any left/right scrolling if set to that or higher (600 x 800 will require scrolling). However, it looks like the Discussions missed the boat by about 5 pixels, which is why you are getting the scroll bar. We need to do a little adjustment to the padding settings and column widths.

Yes, having the discussions paginated would reduce load time, esp for those popular forums like St. Jerry's. That feature request has been captured.

Thanks so much for taking the time to send your feedback.

Broken RSS feeds - partially

I am finding the RSS feeds for all parts of the site to be working very strangely. In Google Reader, several of the feeds do not display a title for the feed subscription. Title links for each post in the feed take me back to a page on WebJunction with no content in it or else they don't work at all. I took a peek at the actual RSS files for one of them and it looks entirely screwed up as far as the title link for each item in a feed.

Thanks Bill,

I'm going to pass on your report to our support and development gurus and they will investigate the problem.

Horizontal scrolling examples

Dale asked for instances of the horizontal scrollbar. Here are some example screen shots.

Discussion forum listing
This problem occurs on all discussion forum listings that I look at. (The individual topic threads look fine.)

The form elements are widely space. The Body section is too small. The emoticon selector is partly off screen.

The next one is not a horizontal scroll problem, but does have display issues :

My browser viewing area is set for 1024x768 with a minimum font size of 17pt (which I absolutely need for readability). My operating system is openSUSE (Linux) 10.3 and my browser is Firefox 2.0.0.15

"My Comments"
12:17 PM EDT 8/13/08 as a reply to Jennifer Peterson.
Just noting that the "number of comments" has remained the same in the "My Comments" portion of "My WebJunction" despite comments being deleted several days ago.

There were four. Four were deleted, but the number remained four. One was added, so the "number of comments" is now five despite only one showing.

Thanks for the report Bob - I have noticed the same issue in my account. I will notify our support team about the issue.

Hi,

I generally like what you all have done with this site. I'm sure it was a LOT of work, and I know it's still kind of beta, so I'm okay with some of the problems (e.g. slow page loads). I just thought I'd mention the two things I'd really like to see added:

1) titles for RSS feeds! I'm subscribed to the feed for the group I created, and I'm thrilled to be able to use RSS to follow the discussion, but for that feed, at least for me, in Google Reader, it shows up as "title unknown," which is not very helpful.

2) I'd like to see the groups I belong to in the My Account sidebox as soon as I log in.

Thanks, and on the whole, good work!

Hi Laura -

Good point about the feed names. I don't have a real answer for this, but I do have a Google Reader workaround in the meantime.

In GR, select the unnamed feed, and then click on the Feed Settings button in the upper right of the screen. One of the options there is "Rename subscription". This allows you to enter anything for the name you want GR to display for the feed. Pretty useful even for a lot of feeds that come with names.

I too am having problems with WJ RSS feed links on Google Reader. They do not take you back to the post. Here is an example link:

Thanks.

I'm not sure where to post this, so if there is a better place, please let me know. I was editing the items on my profile, but I did not see any way for me to easily see what the profile would look like. That is, is there a simple way to preview my profile? Thanks.
Load times
9:29 AM EDT 8/27/08 as a reply to Jennifer Peterson.
Just noting that the home page now loads in a reasonable amount of time (less than 10 seconds anyway) ... but, unfortunately, the "My WebJunction" page takes more than 30 seconds. Since this is where *my* WebJunction experience begins it is far too slow, especially as the current design forces me back to it in order to find conversations.

I can of course "go back" via the browser, but this would not work for an active community site ... the "very new responses" wouldn't appear.

Hi Bob,

Glad to read that you are experiencing faster homepage load times. However, we are still taking on the performance issues full on right now, so that it is consistently faster across for all users and site-wide. Kevin blogged about the process that is being undertaken to address the problems: you can read the details on BlogJunction.

Internal calendar
9:29 AM EDT 8/28/08 as a reply to Jennifer Peterson.
Just now noted that the activity on "My WebJunction" labeled as 8-28 (today) probably occurred the previous day ... I know that at least some did (my own post of yesterday) and assume the rest are because this is early, WJ time.

Hi Bob,
The time stamp on activities is GMT time across the site. We’ve got it on the list to make this localized for folks.

Thanks!

Ross,
There's no preview option when you edit your profile (a great idea though!), but after you make edits, you can see what your public profile looks like by clicking on your name in the "My Account" area, in the right rail. There's lots of information about your profile and making edits to it in the short video: Edit Your Account.

Thanks for posting,
JP

emoticon Well, I signed up for the RSS feed on this discussion. I did not receive any new feeds for your response to this thread, the profile thread, or the discussion on the internal calendar thread. So, the links not working is a mute point if I don't even get *any* RSS updates ;-) I've been checking some of these manually, but, well, that isn't very efficient! Thanks.

Just noting that when I, or a friend, join a new group the notification on my "MyWebjunction" page is given twice.
