Hard Drive failures
1:40 PM EDT 8/25/04
Hi, I was wondering if anyone was experiencing the same problems I been having. Within the last week we have had 5 PCs come in for repair which turned out to have bad (clicking) hard drives. We are expecting another 3 to come in within the next week. All of these ironically just had their warranty expire. Anyone else suddenly seeing a jump in dead hard drives?

Welcome to the group!

What are the details on the drives? Brand? Model? Size? Sometimes a manufacturer will have a bad batch of drives that fail prematurely, and will often replace them.

Sometimes it is simply a matter of applying a firmware update, or other intervention. You might check the manufacturer's website for that model and serial number range to see if there is a known issue and either talk to them or Gateway about a complementary replacement.

Is the clicking constant or just when the drive is being accessed?

Again, welcome to the group!

Sorry, forgot to mention those things. We are North Country Library System. and the drives are Quantum Fireball Plus AS 40GB drives. REV A00 QWP40000AS-A. Thanks again guys.

I had a similar problem last year. We bought 5 computers from the same place - everything had the same specs - and the hard drive went on all of them.

Was not the same brand you mentioned though - can't remember offhand what they were.

Yes, we saw an unusually large number of hard drive failures on that model from a batch that went mostly to NY, NC and VA. Most of them died under warranty. In fact it was one wierd little semi good thing about the software upgrade that the stress of doing it killed off a bunch of these that hadn't quite died yet.

Since this was a known issue, you might want to contact the manufacturer and see if they will replace them for you as if they were under warranty. Wouldn't hurt to ask.

"Disk drive life depends on . . . luck" Posted by Robin Harris -- http://blogs.zdnet.com/storage/?p=156&tag=nl.e622

From the article: "What is the primary determinant of drive life? I’ve read the latest research and talked to insiders. There are so many variables that the best answer is just . . . luck. Why is that? Is there anything you can do?"
