Gateway public access model
3:01 PM EDT 6/20/04
At a recent Transition seminar for the Gates program we were told that Gateway was releasing a public access model with Configurator and Centurion Guard. Does anyone have further information about this model? We need to replace several CPUs and would like more information if anyone knows more about this.

Welcome to the family Nancy! It is great to have you!
I have used neither of the products you mentioned, but have done some research on Centurion Guard. My understanding is that it is a hardware device that creates a separate partition that all changes a patron makes will go into. After the patron logs off, the changes are erased and it is ready for the next patron. It would be very interesting to see how well it is working for others. I have mixed emotions about the idea myself.

We have purchased a Gateway Profile 4, installed the downloadable "public profiles" from the Gates Foundation site and purchased Centurian Guard to install on it. Gateway was not selling preconfigured pcs with Centurion Guard installed when we ordered early this month. The Centurion Guard we purchased directly (http://www.centuriontech.com/English.html).It is supposed to be easy to install, but our computer person is on vacation this week, so it sits in its box waiting.
The main thing to remember if you go this route is that the Gates Foundation tech support will not be available for it, since it would not be a "granted computer."

We purchased Gateway E4000 computerss along with the Centurian Guard locks and installed the Public Access Computing Security Tool. Once we figured out how to install the locks (their instuctions are not very clear) and figured out some of the permissions everything went well.
We learned we should have communicated a little closer with Centurion Guard with what we were going to be provided. What we got was the same exact setup as what we had on the granted computers. Because our purchased computers do not have DVD drives, the DVD/hard drive lock does not work, but the hard drive lock does work.
It has been a pleasure to finally have all our computers operaating the same, with minimal time needed to maintain them. Even better is the ability to simply logout to correct any problems, uninstall programs that have been loaded, etc.

Welcome to the forums and thanks for your post. It will be interesting to hear how the Centurion Guard product works and your experiences with it. Please let us know how that process goes and if you have a chance, tell us about yourself so we can get to know you better!

Kent,
Welcome to the forum! Thanks for sharing your experiences with Centurion Guard. It sounds like a good product. Tell me, do you open the security on the Gates up a bit now that you have those or do you keep them locked down pretty tight?

I checked with a Gateway rep and found out about their new public access model. Gateway?s official launch for this product is on June 21st in Toronto at the ALA. They will have marketing materials (mailers) in a couple of weeks. Any library that is interested should contact Suzanne Woodruff Suzanne.woodruff@gateway.com 800-846-2042 ext. 32119

We still keep things locked down pretty tight. Between Centurion Guard and the Public Access Configurator Tool, things work well. The only thing we have relaxed was to unlock the DVD/CD-ROM drive but leave the hard drive locked.

Regarding the earlier comments about the challenge of installaing Centurion Guard's physical components, some folks might also want to check out the "software version" of that product, named DriveShield. It may well be an easier (and cheaper) solution for hard drive-level protection, especially when used with CenturionTech's Network Controller/License Manager. Other vendors, such as Fortres Grand Corp. (www.fortres.com), have products similar to DriveShield, as well.

Another security program that I have heard of being used is CYIC's "Recovery Genius" (see http://www.cyic.com/_vti_bin/shtml.exe/system_recovery_solutions.htm). It is a software solution that can be managed through a central PC. I heard about when talking with Salt Lake City's technical staff. They had generally favorable things to say about it. I have also heard that Centurion Guard has a networked version but have not heard any feedback on it.

From what I read on the LIBNT-L listserv, Deep Freeze has an excellent reputation, but I haven't used it. We've used Fortres 101 to lock down the desktop and WinSelect's IKiosk to lock down the browser, but Gates' Gateway E6000 model, with the PAC configurator and Centurian Guard is by far the best setup. Unlike Fortres, anything saved to the desktop and all temporary Internet files are gone with every log out. We have also had excellent success using the PAC tool on non-gates, database kiosk situations.

We recently purchased 11 new Dell pcs & Centurion guards (not purchased from Dell).
I did not order the front key Centurion due to no empty bays. I really like the new PCI centurion guards. They can be turned on/off from my pc. ;-) I have the power.
I downloaded the security tool. It is pretty iffy with XP. But once you get it going it is great. I have learned all the files that need to be deleted when it does not work.
This tool never works the same 2 times in a row. I installed everything on one pc then ghosted to the others. No two worked the same when I tried to log on to the profiles. I had to uninstall software on some -- others I just had to copy the profile. Must be an XP thing, never had a problem with 2000.

DeepFreeze is nice.
Set up your PC exactly as you want.
Install DeepFreeze and your PC is essentially frozen as is.
You can delete anything you want and simply reboot it and it comes back up the way it was on day one.
So far we have not run into any issues with it.
We are actually using it in conjunction with the PAC on our non-Gates PCs as does a similar job to CG.

Jackie, welcome to All Aboard and the Hardware Forum! Your input on the configurator and CG is very welcome to me as my next step is to get 11 public access pc's hooked to our catalog and secured.

Jackie-
Could you be so kind as to send me details of what you are seeing with deploying to multiple XP machines?
You mention reinstalling software, are their certain programs that seem problematic? What are the most common errors you see?
Your feedback would be highly appreciated. You can send it to the foundation.org Support mailbox, attention Dale M.

I requested this information from the Gates Lib yahoo group, but wanted the opionion of the Webjunction folks also. I have five PAC's that I plan to download with the Gates Security Tools. With that in place do you feel it is also advisable or necessary to put in Centurion Guards, Deep Freeze, etc. or will the Gates security tools be ample protection from patrons messing with our settings? Welcome to the forums Bobbie!
I too am interested in this as I now have to start working on replacing some terminals with pc's. They will be PAC's and only PAC's, but they will be using the internet to reach our library catalog system (Horizon Information Portal). I need to find a solution that will not only freeze the settings in place, but also will only allow them to get to that one site, so will be investigating different kiosk options.
One question for those using Deep Freeze: How do you handle virus updates? I have been using Roxio's Goback and one big downside is that it keeps wiping out any updates that are made to virus signatures. I would like to avoid that if possible.
