DVD won't boot
5:13 PM EST 3/31/05
I am trying to do the software update from W2K to XP on a Gates computer that several other people have "worked on". The BIOS is set to boot from the DVD first and the DVD is enabled. When I put disk 1 in and reboot, the computer goes right into W2K on the hard drive. When I try to read the contents of the software update disk, I get the error message "F: not accessible - incorrect function". The DVD drive will play audio CDs and I can see the files on a game CD. The software update disks have been used successfully to update several other Gates computers. Has anyone got any suggestions that I might try? Thank you.

If the DVD drive won't read the upgrade disks, the simplest thing to do is just swap DVD drives with another Gates PC (make sure first that the disks are being read on that second PC).

You could try cleaning the drive, but when this happened in the past, we were never able to get the drive to start reading the disks.

I don't know what state you are in, but if you are still under warranty, you should also check to see if the drive will read any kind of DVD. Even with no DVD playing software, you should be able to browse the files on a movie DVD. If it won't read DVD's period, Gateway will replace it under warranty.

Thanks for the suggestion, Dale. I put in a movie DVD and could see the file list. The movie would also play. When I put the software upgrade disk into another Gates computer, I could read the disk files. I suppose the only thing to do now is to swap DVD drives..... sigh. I am sure that I will have to do that anyway to satisfy Gateway when I call them. We are in Iowa with our computers still under warranty. Could this possibly be a software security issue from a previous tech who worked on the workstation?

If you can't browse the Upgrade DVD at all, it is a hardware issue between the drive and disk. This did happen occaisionally with the upgrades. It's probably 50/50 whether Gateway will replace the drive if is only one disk it can't read.

At least the E6000 is an easy model to swap drives on. Just remember to use the same power connector for the DVD so that the Centurion Guard continues to work correctly.

I swapped DVD drives with another Gates computer and the software upgrade disk started right up and the upgrade is going smoothly. I did contact Gateway and they are sending a replacement DVD drive for the malfunctioning one. Thanks for the help!
