Hitachi dvd-Rom GD 8000 Drive Not Working
10:33 AM EST 1/15/07
I am working with a Library here in Maine that just updated QuickTime on two of their Standalone machines and now the DVD Drive wont work! I have unistalled reinstalled unpluged installed a good drive nothing seems to work... I am lost! I also uninstalled Quicktime. I can't start fresh and reinstall the OS if the drive doesn't work right???
Thanks for any insight!

Hi-
Sorry, this sounds like a drag. But a few more details would be really helpful - like:
- Are they both doing the same thing?
- Were they upgraded to Windows 2000? Or still NT?
- If so, do they have Centurion Guards (a lock in the bay just above or below the DVD)?

- When you say the DVD doesn't work, are any of these true?
- is it recognized in exec?
- does it power up? Does it spin if you insert a disk?
- If not recognized in exec, have you looked in Disk Management? (Go to Start>Administrative Tools>Computer Management, and then Disk management - it will show the drives Windows sees, even if they don't have a drive letter).
- Can you get in to BIOS and see if the drive is recognized there?

It is a drag...
They are both doing the exact same thing.
were upgrade to 2000 a while ago ..There is one more machine that we haven't done the Quicktime upgrade to and that machine is running fine.
They do have the Centurion Guards.
When you open up my computer you do not see the drive.
In Disk Management it's in the list but has an ! next to it.
( I am not near the machine today but will be visiting the sight on Thursday)
I think all looked fine in the Bios I did get into it and checked.
I did look at the good machine and other then the ! I can't find a difference.

Was wondering if I had the image on an external drive and tried to reimage the bad computers would that fix the problem??

OK, so definitely this is a Windows issue of some sort.
Try poking around a little again in Disk management (it may help to have a CD in the drive while you do this).

Right-click on the drive and see if you can manually assign a drive letter (I think it should be F on this model - check the good one)
Or right-click and go to Properties and see if you can find anything useful under the Hardware tab - I think there is a Troubleshoot button - though I've never had much luck with those.

Worst case - yes you can definitely re-image from either a saved image, from the Windows 2000 Upgrade DVDs, or from the drive of the unaffected computer. These were all originally identical images, so the only things you should need to change on each pc afterward are the computer name and ip address.
