Federal Legislation on Energy   

U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate have committees that examine many energy-related issues.  The committee names usually remain consistent between congresses, but hte jurisdictions of the committees may change, particularly where the is a new majority party in control.  New U.S. House or Senate Committees usually change their website look and possibly even the website URL.

House Committees

The Committee on Resources in the U.S. House of Representatives is responsible for legislative oversight on natural resources, including energy. This site covers jurisdiction, membership, and the work of the Committee.
The Subcommittee of Energy & Mineral Resources under the Committee on Resources is where bills and amendments covering energy topics are referred. Use the main site for Committee on Resources to discover hearings and reports from the Subcommittee.

 The Committee on Energy and Commerce in the U.S. House of Representatives has a broad jurisdiction and has oversight on many aspects of energy including all aspects of energy from exploration to regulation of fossil fuels, alternative/renewable energy sources, the domestic nuclear energy industry, energy conservation, national energy policy, and the management of the Department of Energy and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.  This site covers schedules, membership, committee news and issues, legislation, and publications.

The Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality under the House Committee on Energy and Commerce has jurisdiction on the following topics:

  • National energy policy generally;
  • Fossil energy, renewable energy resources and synthetic fuels; energy conservation; energy information;
  • Energy regulation and utilization;
  • Utility issues and regulation of nuclear facilities;
  • Interstate energy compacts;
  • Nuclear energy and waste;
  • The Clean Air Act;
  • All laws, programs, and government activities affecting such matters; and
  •  Homeland security-related aspects of the foregoing.

Senate Committees

The Committee on Energy and Natural Resources is the U.S. Senate Committee charged "oversight and legislative responsibilities for: National Energy Policy, including international energy affairs and emergency preparedness; nuclear waste policy; privatization of federal assets; territorial policy (including changes in status and issues affecting Antartica); Native Hawaiian matters; and Ad Hoc issues."  This site provides membership, schedule, hearings, legislation, and major issues for the Committee.

There are four subcommittees under the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources: energy,  national parks, public lands & forests, and water & power.  All four subcommittees cover oversight and legislative responsibilities related to energy and will receive bills and amendments covering energy topics that are referred from the larger Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. This site provides the jurisdictions, membership, schedule, and legislation for all Subcommittees.
