Shameless Self-promotion and News
Shameless Self-promotion and News
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04
Here's a place to pass on news about your professional life, or simply to talk about the new and interesting things you have done.

Maybe even at your library!

Great topic, Bob. Thanks for starting it. And congrats on your new chapter - should be a fun change!

For instance -- after 16 years as the Executive Director of the Franklin Park (IL) Public Library District I'm leaving to become the Director of the Lake Villa (IL) District Library. There will be a host of new challenges, for sure.

Congratulations on the new gig Bob!

I must shamelessly admit that I have been mostly offline for the past two days racing to get the most out of the last few summer days here in New England.

Great topic!

Annual stats
2:59 PM EDT 7/5/06 as a reply to deb lueth.
Just reporting that this year's circ is up 7.2% ... to a shade over 928,000. Woo hoo!
Re: Annual stats
5:05 PM EDT 7/5/06 as a reply to Bob Watson.
Woo-hoo, indeed!! emoticon

Unless I'm mistaken, circulation means hard copy items, like (dare I say it?) books, videos, dvds. I guess the public is not getting everything on the Internet, as has been so direly predicted.

Any similar good news on door counts?
Re: Annual stats
6:59 PM EDT 7/5/06 as a reply to Betha Gutsche.
I can't say we have really accurate stats on that ... hard to get any that mean anything.

(Counting the day of a very busy kid's program isn't kosher in my book.)

I can say that program attendance is up.

Yes, though, this does mean hard copy of some "thing." We've also seen a big increase in the use of our remote databases but, alas and alack, have no way of reporting this (for lack of categories on the official form).

This circ is about 25 per capita, maybe a bit more.
Re: Annual stats
6:52 PM EDT 7/15/06 as a reply to Bob Watson.
Just some more fun stat info: we are averaging over 1000 people a day through the doors - more like 1200-1300 on days we're open 10 - 8. That's in a city population of 29K and county of 60K. So we're feeling really busy!

And, we've received word Bill and Melinda Gates are giving us a nice chunk of money to replace our original Gates computers (the VERY original NT's from 2000). That will give us all new equipment in our public computer areas in our new library (which is coming along at a rapid pace - we expect to be moving there in October).

Our website routinely gets over 20K hits each month, which makes me think people are accessing our remote databases (we just count new and return visitors for our stats, but the company keeping track uses views, and charges extra when it goes over 20K!). People are also logging in to the catalog to place holds from home now that they've figured out someone (usually me) will grab those each morning and have them ready to pick up when we open. Some staff get annoyed by this, but I think it's just a nice service to offer, and that's what we're all about, right?

I'm not a big fan of numbers, because they can be manipulated so easily to support whatever claim you want to make, but it is nice to be able to document how busy we really are!
Re: Annual stats
12:14 PM EDT 7/17/06 as a reply to Pam Henley.
Pam, these are some impressive statistics alright! You must feel like you're running a small city on some days. And 20K hits/month on your website --who says everyone is on Google or MySpace? I'm with you on downplaying the numbers, but these particular numbers should impress even the skeptics.

I just read an American Libraries Council report titled Long Overdue: a fresh look at public and leadership attitudes about libraries in the 21st century. The report states that circulation of library materials has been steadily increasing for over a decade. Can we keep it up, I wonder?

Yay! Congrats, Janie, on your new position.

Pam, it's so good to see you around these parts again! Congrats on the new grant, sounds like it's a critical upgrade.
Networking
12:52 PM EDT 8/23/06 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
Just reporting on our last "Community Services Forum" meeting (our fourth this year).

We had (IIRC) 28 people attending, ranging from a Red Cross rep to a County Health Dept. person to the County Sheriff and the township supervisor. The new superintendent of (elementary) School District 41 gave a brief presentation ... he's new to the area.

So I think we now have an ongoing success.
Re: Networking
1:04 PM EDT 8/23/06 as a reply to Bob Watson.
That sure sounds like success to me! 28 people must represent a solid cross-section of the community. I know you give some more detail about these forums in the Community Partnerships forum earlier this year.

I wonder how many other libraries have tried this approach.
Homework Center
7:21 PM EDT 10/17/06 as a reply to Betha Gutsche.
We're not entirely sure how we rated it, but our new Homework Center got a story (and color photo!) on the front page of today's Chicago Tribune "Metro" section:

(Registration required.)

That's about as big as library publicity gets. :-) All kudos goes to Kerry Reed here at Lake Villa.
Re: Homework Center
5:28 PM EDT 10/17/06 as a reply to Bob Watson.
That is some great PR indeed! Congrats to you and Kerry! emoticon

I was able to get to the story without registering, but the online version doesn't have the color photo --too bad. The homework program sounds terrific. I'm wondering if it takes much extra staff time/effort to provide the help and keep the worksheets current. What a great partnership to have with the local school system.

btw, do you mind if I imbed the url above so that it doesn't push the right rail off the screen? Our software isn't smart enough to text-wrap urls, so it thinks it's one looong word.

This takes very little time, really ... mostly a modicum of care and some processing (so as to insure that our security system will activate if an item "walks").

We had a similar collection at the library I directed prior to this one.

Article Coming Out, more
4:25 PM EST 2/22/07 as a reply to < maddog >.
FWIW, I've got an article coming out in the newsletter "Independent Bookstore" this spring ... it's exploring how public libraries and independent (especially genre) bookstores can work together to promote each other and what might be called the "reader ecology."

http://www.marionstreetpress.com/Indybookstore.html

I'm asking for feedback. I'll post here and likely write up something for Public Libraries.

On another note, the latest Community Services Forum went very, very well. The county board president was our guest speaker and maybe 35 people attended. Several people stayed to talk and network (the entire purpose of this, really) with the county board president herself glad that she met the local Social Security manager (as she'd been given a run-around in getting a name change on her SS card).

Importantly, two of my own board members were there to see what this was about.

Hey LB, I've been a bit scarce lately. On the road visiting community partners coming into WebJunction this summer. We were in IL this month and your name came up several times in the areas of conferencing tools and also general library advocacy. I'm looking forward to seeing your article - sounds interesting and I"d be happy to provide feedback when it's ready for review!

I was ordering a copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows for my son through Amazon since the release data is on a Saturday and I didn't want to drive back to the library to get it.

Anyway ... Amazon keeps a list of the "Harry-est Towns in America" (those with the most pre-orders per capita). Running down the list I found Lake Villa as #75 ... but #1 among Illinois towns. Huzzah!!!

Not much self-promotion here lately.

So ... I'm both proud and entirely mystified that our October 2007 circulation was 9984 items higher than last October's. That's an increase of 13.4%.
Re: Something completely different. Well, sorta.
11:51 PM EST 11/14/07 as a reply to Bob Watson.
I've heard many stories lately where circulation increased because either the collection had been weeded appropriately and/or the library programs were more relevant to the community and were drawing more people into the library than the year before. Either of these the case for you librarybob?

Either way, congrats!

Nice to see you - I hope you're well.

I'm fine, thank you.

My suspicion is that it may be due to the bad economy ... free reads and DVDs are an easy substitute for bookstores and movie theaters.

(I've long read that library circ increases during hard times. I don't have a cite, though.)

We really do need to find more shameless librarians ...

Most recently, the Chamber of Commerce here has agreed to run a column on "business books at the library" in its newsletter. That's part of my campaign to convince the local conservatives that the public library has a positive ROI for the things they are most interested in.

EDIT:

And I should add that a few of the kids we serve are in a photo on page 25 of the January/February _American Libraries_. Kudos go to Elisa Guefflier and Kerry Reed for their "Grab and Snap Photography Contest."

Everything is awesome for us right now. We have had a lot of snow this winter so I don't have to whine about missing my snowmobile riding. On the job front I have been given a large promotion (and rai$e - yeah!) at my 9-5 job so that is a huge relief on the old family budget which had been strained for a long time. Things at the library are also going great - we have a nice harmonious staffing at the moment which makes things run so nicely in libraryland. We are currently waiting to hear back from Gatesville about what sort of hardware upgrade matching funds we might qualify for. I just completed the TechAtlas inventory of our PACs...

Sounds good Harry - have you heard back yet about the Gates funds? Let us know details of any fancy new upgrades!

I have been back to work at WJ for several weeks, but find my head still spinning most of the time. I haven't had much time to get past my email inbox, but I'm hoping to be back on the web more now that I am mostly caught up.

BTW joqpub4 - congrats on your new job - pls be sure to let us know how things are going. (You'll do well - change is good for every library!)

Chrystie - I'm sure you will be back up to speed in no time. You could always delete all your emails. If there are any important ones in there I'm sure you'll hear back about it, hahaha!

We haven't heard anything back on Gates funds as yet but I imagine it won't be long. I think I heard it was actually a <i>matching funds</i> program this time around so, there may not be many funds available to match...

So what's circulating so hotly ---DVDs, manga, books?
Re: Upward bound
6:49 PM EDT 6/4/08 as a reply to Betha Gutsche.
Trending up, galloping up ... an average of maybe 10% each of the last few years. *Everything* except VHS tapes (being discontinued) is circing more, with our free DVDs bringing in ever more people.

Part of this is due to population growth and the most recent increases may be due to the poor economy. Books continue to do well, and aren't manga books? :-)

Heck, we've got lots of teens coming and have little extra just for them aside from manga, a small YA collection, and anime.
Re: Upward bound

I don't much like to double-post, but *have* to announce that our library has officially passed the 1,000,000 circulation mark for our fiscal year ending June 30.

I have some news: my editor wrote to me and says that my book is "quite good" and that she doesn't feel that there has been much substantive editing. On the one hand, I feel good about this because that means at least one person likes it. On the other hand, I feel somewhat nervous about this because if she's not editing much, that might be a bad thing. (bite nails) I also heard that the committee came back with a title for me: inside, outside, and online: building your library community. Usually, I am quite shameless with these type items. Other times, I am like: me? I wrote a book? What do I know about that topic? Not enough!! (more nail biting)

Heh. I know dozens of people who have written books ... you're going to be fine! Not many of them knew what the book would be like before they finished. Books grow and, often enough, the writer is more a gardener that a god-like creator.

If you have a chance, please check out a new part of our webpage (at http://www.lvdl.org) ... the Community Hub. It's at the top right.

It's composed of four sections. First, there's the Virtual Bulletin Board where we'll display posters and fliers that people send to us. Hopefully, we'll become *the* place for people to learn of local events, programs, plays, etc. We hope people will send fliers to us via e-mail, but we'll be happy to scan them. This is "interactive with the community."

Second, there's the Community Calendar. This is intended to let people know what is going on locally ... and an additional place to advertise our own programs, etc. You rollover each entry for detail. It is also "interactive with the community" since people can send us info about events.

Third, there's the Local Web Directory. Here's a single place to go to find the local web ... built with the cooperation of the Chamber of Commerce. It includes more than Chamber members (members get the Chamber logo next to their entries) and has two purposes. One is to make access easier for everyone. Two is to make sure that the library is firmly supported by the business community.

Fourth, there's the "Volunteer Center" where people can go to find local volunteer opportunities. We've partnered with a couple local organizations and will be expanding this.

Please let me know what you think.

On another point, we now (as of a half-hour or so ago) have a Facebook page. We'll be using it, of course, to advertise programming, etc., but we'll also be using it for teenage volunteers to write reviews of programs they've attended, hopefully from their own FB accounts. This may bring in their friends, thus expanding our fanbase.

Thank you. We do what we can.

I wish we had better software for the local web directory, but we're basically stuck with what we can find available for dotnetnuke. Also, as I wanted to avoid *any* copyright issues with the Yellow Pages people I put together a home-grown taxonomy. I'm not sure it works for users since my goal (of not creating one enormous list and hence one *really* long scroll) may not be shared.

It helped, I think, that I spent some time in the corporate/R&D library world. They're more tuned to creating value-add products for their users.

These are things I think public libraries should do. There's not enough money in it to attract a commercial vendor and it adds value. I hope our current 40,000 a month of website hits will double in a couple years.

On another note (and always hoping that others might post their successes), two very nice things happened within a few minutes of each other this morning. Wikipedia was updated to reflect *my* definition of "social media" (not done by me, btw, but rather by net elder John Lebkowsky) and a local company e-mailed me about inclusion in our new local web directory.

But of course!

Interesting note about the updates to the Wikipedia entry. Did you participate in the discussion when the page and definitions were challenged? Were you advocating it to describe it as content rather than technology, or...?

Here's the social media entry on Wikipedia. Reading this definition reminds me of a great blog post I read last night on the Social Signal blog. Alexandra reminds us to stop trying to keep up with social tools, and to stay focused on why we use them.
RE: New Lake Villa Stuff
1:08 PM EDT 8/5/09 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
Hi Sharon, Chrystie ...

I was not involved with the "on site" discussion, but rather a Facebook discussion where Jon Lebkowski was pondering a Wikipedia change. My contribution was merely the phrase "human need for social interaction" but that put the focus on the "why" of "social media" as opposed to the tools.

I agree that it's impossible to keep up with the social tools, especially if you're doing other things like running libraries. But you need an awareness ... kids will adopt something and the next thing you know, you're an old fogey.

Not that I'm not anyway. :-)

I agreed with her reminder about the broadcast. There's a lot of that going around, though I suppose it's better to have *lots* of broadcasters than to have only a few, it still sort of bugs me when people use the tools more like a soapbox than a conversation enabler. And sometimes I suppose I do that myself, but I try not to.

I am shamelessly joining in this discussion, although I have been absent from WJ for a few years (and that is shameful, I admit!). Our Library Drill Team participated in our local Sweet Pea Festival parade this morning, after a 2-year absence - something our patrons noticed and commented on frequently. So they were rewarded this year with the new version, no bookcarts but slapping books together to make a cadence (donated books that didn't make it to the booksale, for anyone concerned we were harming valuable items!). We had 12 of us (up from our usual 8) so could make a pretty impressive "wave" and pinwheel maneuver. I'm waiting to see if any usuable video is available from my friend's Flip camera.

9:23 AM EDT 7/6/06 as a reply to Janie Hermann.
One of the interesting points, here, is that this was once quite rural ... and still is in some ways.

I lived very nearby nearly 45 years ago and vividly remember walking across US 45 to visit the kid whose parents had a mink ranch on the other side. My brother and I were there a lot ... there was a large marsh, with muskrats and such. The road wasn't at all busy.

Now ... it would be child abuse to let a 4th grader get near that road. It's a southbound traffic jam, most mornings.

And yet the little lakes here and the forest preserves keep an open feeling and there's still room for another 20,000 people or so to build homes in the township ... at which point we'll be as "urban" as anywhere else in Chicago's suburbia.

Except ... and here's a nice point ... the beaver are back. They weren't here 45 years ago.

I know this doesn't really follow maddog's post in any sense excepting chronological, but since doing otherwise in a threaded environment (by following some previous post of my own) might seem self-serving I'm following him anyway.

My library is a member of the North Suburban Library System (just outside Chicago). NSLS is experimenting with CoPs (Communities of Practice) that use a rather simple, but adequate, variety of linear conferencing.

It's early there since only a couple of the administrators have much experience in things other than mailing lists, but I've hopes. I of course mentioned that I'm willing to help, but as the newest kid in the boat (having been at my new job only a month) I'm not about to set it rocking. :-)

We'll see. Anyway, I just wanted to note that senior management may now be finding out what community spaces like Web Junction can provide.
RE: RE: Joined new CoP
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Bob Watson.
Hey Bob, I am so excited to hear that there are other lib professionals venturing into the online community arena. The more examples we have out there, the more spaces & needs I think we'll be able to fill - for each other!

I think we're onto something here. Let us know how it goes...

I know I'm not a veteran online community person, but it does seem to me that community building is more about the content, response, sense or feeling of community, programming, etc. The technology can certainly hinder or help you out in these areas - but it's not the most important thing.

Don't worry folks - I'm not giving up on my advocacy for a better messaging system for us all - I'm just realizing that the community is so much more about the people/connections/assistance we're giving each other, than it is about the tools we have (or don't have) for that.

That said, everything will always fall to the borrom of the thread list anyway, as the default view is to list all posts chronologically, and not in threaded order. So go ahead and reply to yourself if you'd like.

BTW, we know you're not self serving - just "shameless"!! emoticon

So much of it is modeling, showing folks how to do things.

Trouble is, that means having a group of people who are willing to post *a lot* in the early days. I'm encouraging people as well as I can -- most recently I e-mailed the system director and suggested that she make open-ended posts. Questions can draw folks to respond where statements cannot.
RE: CoPs and Rappers
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Bob Watson.
I often wonder if why it is that some people take to online conferencing and some do not. I have seen ventures falter and fail that seemed like a sure thing. Publishers, writers and celebrities who maybe did not really want a 2 way conversation with their readers and fans, office types who were too used to the old email-go-round, etc.

Likewise I have seen communities spring up around what seemed at the time to be the weakest of pretenses. I guess you just never know.

You can point their browsers to conferences but you can't make them post...

RE: RE: visiting the question
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Bob Watson.
Surprisingly good. Maybe a third of the public library administrators are now involved -- and those at a administrator's meeting I was at last Friday said they found it to be more useful than the lists they had been using prior to this.

I *am* trying to keep a fairly low profile on this since I'm the new kid on the block, so to speak. Also, the NSLS staff need to "own" the product w/o my interference -- its not their fault that they can't afford more flexible software. Anyway, Sarah Long keeps asking for my opinion and I give her the upbeat half. I want this to succeed as much as she does, maybe more, since I see boards as a way to engender real many-to-many communication in this profession.

In our town we are in the middle of setting up a VPN between the library, town hall and the schools. I have my fears that once we have the technology in place the users may not embrace it.

Do you have any sort of VPN associated with your library?
RE: RE: no VPN
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Bob Watson.
Not now, probably not likely given our governance structures, leastways for the high schools.

We're a township-sized district library serving a township where high school districts overlap. There are four, maybe five, high school districts serving various parts of the township. Serving the schools means also serving non-residents -- which is where it gets dicey. We'd likely have to get some type of agreement with the other libraries and some type of pro rata funding mechanism.

Also, these school districts are not poor (a new high school opens next fall about a mile north of the library) and *can* reach us via the web -- students with library cards can access our various online resources, as well as our catalog.

The two villages that are almost entirely within our district are another story -- it would be good to have a kiosk in each village hall. Right now, though, we're fighting one of them in order to proceed with a new parking lot. There are three other villages that are at least partway within our district -- but I don't think they're a critical part of the problem.

RE: More horn tooting
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Bob Watson.
This past Tuesday, I met with one of the local grade school district superintendents. He greenlighted my proposal that the public library offer online book discussions for 7th and 8th grade students.

We're working out the details now, hoping to be up and running within a few weeks. This will be "conferencing" rather than "chat" so as to allow participation whenever a student has 'net access (from home or school) and also so as to make sure that our actual staff-time investment is reasonable.

We view this as a way to bring programming to YAs and as a way to keep them involved in the library when, so often, it looks to them as though everything's "on the web." The selling point to the school was that this was also "enrichment" that stressed reading *and writing* skills.

We hope to be expanding this to other schools and other grades, plus eventually giving home schoolers a place to interact with the public school kids. I, ah, didn't tell the public schools about this last bit. ;-)

We also hope to be able to offer other types of programming through this medium -- a writing program would be a natural.
RE: ach out and IM someone
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Bob Watson.
Will there be any sort of chat element tied to the conferences? Scheduled live chats with an engaging moderator might be a good way to lure the kids to participate in the actual conference discussions. Most of the YA I know do not tend to think conferencing is that cool. They seem to prefer the immediacy of the chat room environment...
RE: RE: RE: More horn tooting
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Bob Watson.
Well, thanks, Chrystie ... I really don't expect us to be up and running for at least a month or two. Right now, we're identifying the software we want to use -- I'm hoping to get some type of "educational discount" from WebCrossing since I know someone on the inside there. But, if I can't, there are a couple of servicable cheap options that may lead the way to something better.

One requirement, I think, is that we can archive to CD. That way, 1) the school (and maybe also each kid) gets a record of what was done and 2) we don't have to keep old conversations on our server for very long.

Maddog asked about chat. It's a good point -- and it may be that we'll have a chat session or two, but I think asynchronous will work better in the existing school situation (little Jack or Jill can go online whenever classroom scheduling allows).

The downside seems to be that we'd need a Linux box in an MS shop. Which, I think, means "not now" but maybe in the future ('cause if we're ever going to maintain local community web pages it would most likely be via Apache -- let the local script kiddies bounce off that for a while). :-)

WOW! That is quite a circ number for that size population. Have you added new things, like DVD's, books on CD, etc? Do you also count traffic through the doors? We have alot of traffic but much of that is strictly internet use and doesn't do anything for circulation.

Now the pressure is on to keep up those stats!
Re: New circ record
11:10 AM EDT 7/26/04 as a reply to Pam Henley.
We haven't added anything new, but about mid-way through the year we changed our DVD lending policy from a limit of 2 to a limit of 10 ... now we're chasing the purchase of additional copies to meet demand. That *might* have added 3 or 4 percentage points, but it is also true that we're in a rapidly growing area and have been targeting some previously neglected schools ever since I hired a new Head of Youth Services, last November.

Our AV collection, like most I suppose, has been expanding and circ is booming.

The online trends cited by Gnatek --customized library websites, library blogs, online book clubs, and distribution of e-audio books-- all sprouted from references to All Aboard conversations and WJ features, especially the LOTM about the Richmond Public LibraryÂ’s website.

Great behind-the-scenes advocacy, Chrystie! But next time, I would hope to see you (and WJ) getting the upfront credit that you deserve.

Here I go again, highlighting Chrystie's achievements because I guess she's not quite "shameless" enough to do it herself.

Chrystie's article about online communities was published in the February issue of Library Journal -- congratulations!

Everything I Need To Know I Learned Online By Chrystie R. Hill -- 2/15/2005

"Online communities can help librarians save time, establish professional links, and reconnect with the roots of the profession"

It's music to our 'virtual community' ears!
Re: Shameless Self-promotion and News
8:54 AM EST 3/11/05 as a reply to Betha Gutsche.
Nice article Chrystie - congratulations! I especially like the part where you said <i>Online communities can form or function around anything. They do talk, about summer vacations, pets, and new job offers.</i> A site like this is such a great resource to connect with other librarians and tech people. It has become a great knowledge base and source of problem solving for libraries everywhere, but it is how we interact as people that make the place truly live and breathe.

While I am thankful to have a place to connect with my peers for discussion and problem solving, I am also most interested in how we interact as human beings in the first place. That is why I value the strictly social areas as much as the rest of the forums. I think it is important we get to know each other first before diving straight into that thorny database problem or hardware malfunction. This is why I start topics that are more or less online word games or art galleries. It gives us more insight into <i>who</i> we are talking to rather than just <i>what</i> we are talking about...
Re: Shameless Self-promotion and News
3:27 PM EDT 4/10/05 as a reply to < maddog >.
I agree about the importance of interacting as human beings. I was struck by that at the recent Computer in Libraries conference, where I had the opportunity to meet some personalities that I had previously known only through their online presence. It makes a huge difference to attach a more complete profile of the 'live' person to the more focused virtual identity. It adds meaning and substance to their cyberspace communications.

Since we can't meet all the WJ members face-to-face, the games and picture-sharing are the next best thing. Thank you, maddog, for your creativity! emoticon Except that I have yet to be fast enough to get an entry into Acrophobia (and I'm afraid to touch "bankrupt").

2) Our youth services department is using a wiki for internal book reviews -- every wiki member can add to/alter pages, so a given book can have several reviews and associated comments. That will likely be expanded to whoever's interested within the local library system, and after that to the world.

Not that we're ambitious or anything ....

That freakin' rocks! Please tell us when you take your wiki public. Would you like to write a quick article about what you're doing and post it on the WJ!?

I'd love to hear about it. Some of our other community partners (Colorado) are using the discussion space (here, but private to CO) for book review discussions. It's working out ok, but I'd love to see what a wiki environment does to support this sort of communication and sharing.

Tell, tell...

Well, that won't likely be for several, perhaps many, months. This is because we don't know what traction we'll get at the library system and hence how our youth services department will feel about "going public."

I, personally, wouldn't give a rip but then I've been working online and in public a long time. Some folks are shyer.

(On the other hand, I <b>could</b> make it a goal....)

Right now, the department is doing reviews on our internal forum. That means "one at a time, one person at a time." A wiki requires a different mindset.

Sorry to hear that. I hope she's much better!

I'll likely go in for the exhibits ... maybe make it to the WebJunction get together.

My wife has a new job, so I'm not sure what hours I'll have available.

By the way, I got an attaboy from one of the local mayors regarding our local web directory, http://www.lvdl.org/webdir/

Next up, likely, we'll be offering to put the minutes from local organizations online. We'll offer this to the villages, schools, and townships as well, but I'm really aiming at things which local taxpayers will think directly helps them.

Some thoughts on yesterday ... an open house focusing on the local web directory and a barbecue after that. It was an interesting day ... a good day.

The local web directory open house was from 2-5, the staff/legislator BBQ from 5:30 to 7, and the regular Library Board meeting from 7 to 7:30. So I had to be "up" for about 6 hours straight.

The open house didn't attract as many people as I'd wanted, but among the ones who did come -- and who said they really liked the directory when I demonstrated it to them -- were 1) the President of the Chamber of Commerce and 2) the President of the Lake County Board (and also President of the Lake County Republican Party).

I think the Chamber (the Executive Director was there the entire time) gained maybe 3 new members due to this event. That's a big win for them.

The open house sequed into the BBQ. Maybe half the staff were there, a couple of the people invited from either the Friends of the Library or the advisory board for the Library Foundation came, and two of our three local state legislators came. These were Representative Bob Churchill (R -- Lake Villa) and Senator Adeline Geo-Karis (R - Zion).

One of the first things Geo-Karis did was write a check for $100. She had it in her mind, I think, that this was an opportunity to meet a few younger voters (which, from her POV, is anyone under 80). I was really surprised that she showed up. She's mostly in a wheelchair now and always has an attendant. Anyway, the Board president tackled her while I fiddled about in the background for the first 15 minutes or so.

Bob Churchill and I had a chance to talk for maybe an hour. I can't say he's a great raconteur, but his story of running with the bulls in Pamplona maybe 30 years ago was pretty good. We had a chance to talk about a few library issues ... mostly the disconnect between the associations and the public libraries, but also about the Patriot Act. He thinks it's pretty stupid.

Anyway, my purpose in all of this was to establish an open line so that when a library issue *does* come up at some point both I and my Board will have an easy way to get ourselves heard without having to work through the library association/library system filter. Our POV may be rather different.

The Board meeting went very well ... less than half an hour (most work is done at the committee meetings).

lb, sorry for my silence of late ~ been busy round these here parts as well.

i am always inspired by your consistent efforts to demonstrate the value of the library to your community. you mentioned in our web seminar last winter that you think of your community as an ecosystem. this is a powerful way of gaining some new perspective on our work, I think. you seem to not get discouraged; perhaps because your ecosystem is stable and your place in it is well acknowledged?

another thing I've thought of lately: is it ever useful to just quietly "be" a library? i.e., checking out materials, doing children's summer reading programs, answering reference questions, helping folks get online? sometimes i think we get caught up in a flurry or even a fight mode (which has it's place - but maybe the quiet time can be just as useful?)

something for us all to think about ... when we have a moment.

Shameless Self-promotion:

We implemented a self/express checkout three weeks ago that we designed

it was doing almost half of the circulation in our Youth Services Department.

Writing your own code is *very* awesome. Wonderful.

On another note, I think it's the administrator's lot to *always* be in the fight (for attention, for resources, for good staff) ... it would be fun to relax and get out on the floor doing the old routines of reference and such, but my value to the library lies in making sure I talk to the people I need to talk to so the library is properly positioned for tomorrow's needs (whatever they may be).

On yet another note, or two, our IT guy and I have been talking over a couple possible projects. One is easy enough: remote wifi nodes in the village halls (done via high-gain antennas).

The other is more problematic because of the untamed legal issues. We'd like to do one-to-one streaming of audiobooks. As long as you've got a net connection you'd be able to listen to an audiobook "checked out" to you for three weeks ... no download or DRM required.

On reflection ... yet another note, I suppose ... I should report that this library's circulation hit a new monthly high of 82,530 (17% higher than last August's). This is due, in the main, to an expanded summer reading club.

And great staff members!

librarybob, where have you gone?
Re: Shameless Self-promotion and News
12:34 PM EDT 10/17/05 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
Sorry ... I've been about rather less often lately.

Busy with, ah, stuff. :-)

My latest strategic gambit is to start a "Community Services Forum": quarterly lunch meetings for the people who provide various human services within my library's catchment area. Examples are schools, local governments, county health department, police, park districts, Chamber of Commerce, service clubs, etc.

There are several purposes. The "obvious" is to help the people who interact with the public get to know each other ... this leads to better services and, perhaps, a better bang for the tax dollar. The "not quite so obvious" include making sure that library staff have access to various local experts (rather important some times) and building up the perception that the library "is important and necessary" among the various politicos. This will be important in 6 - 10 years when we need to expand our building.

Speaking of which, we've been working with an architect to determine what, exactly, can be put on our *rather* wet site (we back up to a small lake and wetlands). We completed a new parking lot, across a street, last year ... with the impact of that being that we *can* build up to 70,000+ square feet if we get a parking variance ... which we should be able to get since we're now zoned for office space (which needs parking for all office staff through the business day).

Re: Shameless Self-promotion and News
12:05 PM EST 10/31/05 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
I wish I was a "pro" off line ... I'm a bookish sort IRL (in real life) and find that I have to force myself to do things which would otherwise be out of character. It's part of the gig when you get into the management end of modern public librarianship.

I'm a reference librarian by training and disposition. :-)

Our latest news is the successful completion of the world's first authorized CLUE® tournament on Saturday evening.

This wasn't really my idea (nor my cup 'o tea), but rather that of our Board treasurer, who's also the guiding force behind our Library Foundation. He's also run many events for his parish.

This took several months of negotiating through Hasbro's legal and marketing folks. They've allowed many Monopoly® tournaments (and the library just south of us made several thousands of dollars last year), but no CLUE® tournaments.

We held it in a nearby mansion, Tir Na Nog. We ran three rounds of play through the day, with the last round playing at about 5:30. As it happened, kids won through the elimination rounds and the last round pitted 4 junior/senior high kids against each other.

We introduced the "suspects" at that time (all dressed in character):

Colonel Mustard: State Senator Bob Churchill
Mr. Green: Township Supervisor Dan Venturi
Professor Plum: me
Miss Scarlett: Library Board President Caroline Jacobson
Mrs. Peacock: Lake County Board Chairman Suzi Schmidt
Mrs. White: Library Friends President Cathy Thilmany

A grand time was had by all. There were two stories in the Sunday Daily Herald (and I expect there will be coverage in three more newspapers).

I don't think we made any money, though (not enough people at the end of the day) but I think we know what to do next time: elimination rounds in the library over a couple of weeks, silent auction starting in the library for a week prior, have the final two rounds start at 5:30 rather than just the final round (to keep more people on site). The catering coast a bunch and we had way too much beer/wine/pop left over.

Anyway, it was a First for CLUE® and hopefully a First for the Lake Villa District Library Foundation.

Of course, some of the "important things" happened "on the side." State Senator Geo-Karis made a substantial donation to the Foundation. Library Board Pesident Jacobson was able to talk to County Board President Schmidt about the library helping the county purchase forest preserve land if any comes available very close to the library (and there is one parcel, with a resort, that may). Those things are easier to talk about informally, eh?
Re: Shameless Self-promotion and News
2:03 PM EST 10/31/05 as a reply to Bob Watson.
Wow --that last paragraph was a knockout!

"Of course, some of the 'important things' happened 'on the side.'"

I've been mining the message boards for ideas on how to make the library more visible in the community, especially to the folks who hold the policy and funding reins. I liked your earlier post about hosting quarterly lunch meetings with other community organization leaders to literally "get a seat at the table" with them. But this CLUE® tournament idea takes it all to a new level. Get those influential poeple to actively participate in a library event and have fun! And then get some conversations going about the library's value. As you say, "Those things are easier to talk about informally, eh?"

Please keep sharing those brilliant ideas. emoticon
Re: Shameless Self-promotion and News
8:40 PM EST 11/2/05 as a reply to Betha Gutsche.
I've been thinking about an example I heard recently of an online community being used to (among other things) mobilize a huge in-person, physical funding effort for a national non-proift. They use regular online conferencing and blogging to support a volunteer base that does a major grassroots funding effort (like a walk) that raises millions of dollars a year. (Inquiring minds may want to know: I'm talking about SHARE and the March of Dimes.)

Since I heard about that I wondered if we could use our network here at WebJunction to orchestrate a nation-wide awareness-building or fund-raising effort for libraries. Bob's Clue (cute circle R) game is certainly an inspiration to do stuff locally - I also wonder if we could get together to do somethign (similar?) nation-wide.

Hmmm. Perhaps this is a project for our Demonstrating Impact focus - in Jan. Anyone else have some ideas along these lines? Or, think it could fly?
Re: Shameless Self-promotion and News
1:45 PM EST 11/3/05 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
Perhaps ... I suspect part of the problem of doing this would be to have some type of national target that people are willing to spend their personal (and local) money on. Otherwise it's simply a way to get more local money.

Having this as a way to get more local money may be a good thing in many locations, but not all.

Maybe this should be a project for various local library foundations.

I suppose I should report on the "Community Services Forum" meeting we had on the 15th.

We sent out something like 100 invitations and wound up with 15 organizations sitting around the table ... a good first showing because these people all want to come back in February and indicated that they wanted to bring others. Among the attendees:

2 high school districts
1 grade school district
2 parks departments
1 forest preserve district
1 Chamber of Commerce
1 Kiwanis club
1 Lions club
1 Local Republican Club
1 crisis intervention center
2 youth services agencies
1 public library
1 university extension service

A bit of a side note: I'd been asked that previous week to be part of a panel interview for a new school superintendent. One of the questions dealt with "working with the community" -- an important requirement at any time but doubly important due to their need to pass a referndum. The person being interviewed asked whether or not there was a local forum where various organizations could meet and discuss shared issues.

My 5 seconds of glory came when two mayors and the township supervisor looked my way ... so I could say that the first meeting would be that next Tuesday.

that's one of the things that's so nice about my job - and any librarian's job, really - helping each other is one of the things we do best because it's part of what we learn - a process for helping people share & obtain useful information (so, helping people easily turns into helping ourselves). sometimes i feel like we'd better keep quiet about it though (Shhhhhhhh! comes to mind) so that the profession isn't saturated - besides, it'd be much better if we could spread the do-gooders around a bit!!

I will be shameless with you! Here are my recent brags:

I am setting record attendance for technology training at our library for the last 3 months! I am topping 200 people attending technology training per month at our library and am on my way to reaching my goal of 2000 people by the end of the year. If I do this, it will double last years attendance rate!

We have also added 6 new classes since Sept. and will be adding 3 more before June! Here is our current class roster:

http://www.princetonlibrary.org/reference/techcenter/classes.html

I spoke at Computers In Libraries last week about our tech training program and had lots of positive response from those who attended. I think we are ahead of the curve in the classes we are offering.

Oh, and I also finally got on the blogging bandwagon this week. Several of us from NJ have been talking about doing a collaborative blog for a few months now and my attending CIL got me to kick our butts in to gear...

We just started... but I think our first posts are rocking:

Good on you, janieh!

Regarding your question, Chrystie ... not yet, for us. We've got some internal interest in online language courses but not much real public demand ... and there's some online language learning content in the NetLibrary package we're now able to deliver.

I think it's a size issue. It's hard for us to make a business case since we've got less than 40,000 residents in our district ... doing something "for one" without at least being able to ILL a "real item" for others makes online courses problematic. It's probably something better done in a consortium context.

Okay... I got some more bragging to do :-)

I gave a 2 hour presentation this past Saturday for a Reference class at Rutgers SCILS. I was talking about the changing nature of reference work, how to keep your library vital, and how we can integrate Web 2.0 technologies in to library services to stay cutting edge. Based upon the feedback, the students really liked the topic which made all the work for me worth it.

More importantly to me, however, is the fact that I received a lovely email from one of the students who was not sure about which type of library work she wanted to pursue. Based upon my talk, she is now consdering public librarianship as a career path. Her email to me was so heartfelt and kind... it really made my day.

Wow Janieh, what's your secret? That's awesome. (Those are some great courses, by the way--maybe THAT's your secret!)

At my library we're following the instruction-tied-to-courses model, which is great when it works, but which is dependent on teaching faculty who can vary demand substantially. Last semester I taught a dozen library workshops; this semester, only two. Hmph.

Our reference staff is small, so doing non-course-related workshops may not be doable for us: some weeks it's hard just to get all the reference hours covered if someone's out for some reason. But teaching is the aspect of librarianship I'm least comfortable doing, therefore I should do more of it--and there has to be SOME way of reaching the students who need help but whose professors don't schedule classes, or who are too shy to approach the reference desk.

And just to keep this on topic, this week I was asked to serve on an ACRL-STS committee. Yay!

I know you'll do a great job. Anyone who is so excited to embrace the chaos of a library in the midst of construction will be able to meet all challenges creatively. Let us know how it goes.

Hello People

I am posting from Ireland. I am a post grad student in library and Info studies. I am wondering if you can help me.

I am doing a project on digital libraries. Part of the project is to assess and advise a library on potential digital capabilities that they might want to consider/ incorporate as part of the library management system.

We have chosen a small specialist library that is part of a larger university library. It is tied into the parent library's management system, aliph. Part of the conundrum is that because of it's collection - books printed before 1850 it does not face the same challenges as your traditional library. It acquires at most 7 books a year. Does not have a circulation problem as it does not lend books. Scholars come to the library to study the books.

In ways it does not want a huge public advertisement campaign. It considers itself a working library and to have hundreds of people milling about might put it's stock in jeopardy.

I would really appreciate some advice

I'm curious as to why a digitization project (or anything equally adaptable for telepresence) would add a great deal of traffic to the library. Indeed, one might think it would lessen such traffic.

Is there any thought to putting the most unique titles online for remote access? They're out of copyright (if there ever was such a concept when they were made!).

I agree with librarybob. A digitization project might decrease foot traffic. Putting the most unique titles online is a great idea, however, what about the cost? Digitization projects can be expensive...
Good luck whatever the outcome,
Jocelyn
