Hello! I'm Chrystie and I'm the community coordinator for WebJunction. I've been a freelance information specialist & librarian for about 3 years, and have spent most of that time working on communication exchange on the Web. I started with research in digital information services, and a concern for how technology is going to change the practice of reference librarianship for public librarians. The more I became passionate about using technology as a tool for connecting people with information and with each other (not to mention globally, and faster than fast), the more interested I became in Web based community. I'm thrilled to be a part of WebJunction as we all discover what an "online community" might become for librarians and other folks providing public access. My bottom line? Making WebJunction a place where our members get connected, both to information and to each other. On a personal note: I love history and popular culture - have a fish named Scarlett - and wear funky vintage "librarian" glasses that I found *brand spankin new* in a junk shop in Chicago. Don't be shy now ... tell us about you!

Thanks for posting, Margo.

I hope you'll like using All Aboard once we really get rolling. Luckily, WJ has icons in the works, as well as some other "fancy" things that will be rolling out over time.

Please, keep your comments and suggestions coming! You can post them here on All Aboard, or email community@webjunction.org.

Thanks,

RE: I'm Curious AND I'm George
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
I like the name of WJ's column: I'm Curious, George!

I think that the time to do all of this technology stuff is something that librarians really struggle with. That's what I'd like to see people talk about on WebJunction. For example, what do you do when a patron comes to the desk and asks you about setting up hotmail so that they can email their grandkids, and then you come to find out that they've never touched a mouse before? I try to help them as much as I can if there is no one else at the reference desk, but usually I get really backed up and end up having to move back and forth between my technology training for one patron and all the other patron questions. I'd love to hear and talk more about strategies for dealing with this type of real world situation - how do you work in time for this stuff *and* do regular reference?

By the way, I'm George...but not the same George from the article!
Re: RE: I'm Curious AND I'm George
6:06 PM EDT 7/25/06 as a reply to George Wallace.
George,
A cordless phone would serve you well when you are alone at the desk; you're able to roam the aisles and do what you need to and still answer calls. However, for patrons who walk up to the desk while you're giving email tutorials, you may have to look into the feasibility of "cloning" for the time being....
RE: Welcome George!
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
George! Welcome to All Aboard and thanks for posting.

I agree that taking time for technology and public access is a big (and new!) issue for librarians. I'd suggest you head over to the Tech Planning Forum, cause they're talking about this very issue. It's a good reminder that 'tech planning' isn't just about strategically planning for computers, software, programs, etc. It's also figuring out how to work technology training and assistance into the reference work flow - or finding other ways to meet those needs.

As for those patrons who've never seen a mouse before, I have a suggestion for that too! Go to the search button at the top of this page and do a search for "mouse" and you'll find a handy worksheet on "mouse basics" that might be helpful in that specific situation...

Let us know about your experiences on All Aboard or with WebJunction. You can post to the board, or email community@webjunction.org.

RE: Intro for Coe Gardner
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
I'm Coe and I'm the IT director for a large urban library system in the midwest. I'm most interested in public access librarianship from the big picture view. For example, I'd like to hear from people who are *really* happy with their public access control software, and also from folks who are working on equity in public access programs (how to start them and get support for them in terms of funding, etc.). I look forward to talking about these things with other people on WJ, if they are interested as well.
RE: Welcome Coe!
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
Hello Coe, and welcome to All Aboard! It looks like you should keep your eye on the "Software" and "Funding" forums, for starters. The topics you mention would be good fits there. It also looks like we've got another request for a "partnership" type topic area. See Nikki's intro post (partnership forum suggestion) if you'd like to join the conversation that's started there.

Thanks,

I first learned about webjunction at the ALA conference in Toronto and immediately signed up (and spoke up). I was charmed to receive a kind email from Chrystie Hill this morning, welcoming me and suggesting that I introduce myself to the group.

So, as the subject sez, I AM SAM - Sam Coghlan. I am Chief Librarian at Oxford County Library (OCL) in a rural county in southern Ontario, Canada (roughly mid-way between Toronto and Detroit).

OCL serves 50,000 folk through 1 town library and 17 village libraries. Public Access has been the library's life jacket by which we've managed to make a meaningful entry into the 21st century.

Our village libraries were 1-person libraries open as few as 6 hours a week all the way up to 15(!) hours per week. Communication, team building, creating a corporate culture was impossible. So, when the Canadian government introduced CAP (Community Access Program) in 1995, we were quick to get on board.

We had our challenges to meet and we think of 1997-8 as the dark years, as we were doing pitifully and our book budget was virtually annihilated. We were an embarrassment to the CAP people in Ottawa.

Now, myself and my colleague John Moore are considered "CAP Champions" (I hate that term, but it's what they use) and OCL has been asked to tell its story many times across the country and even in Australia (at an ALIA conference). Our branches are now open from 12 - 35 hours per week and we have a system wide esprit-de-corps that is absolutely inspiring.

The story of how we went from there to here is too long to relate here, but there are aspects of our story that I think may be helpful for others to hear. So, I will try and pipe up on ALL ABOARD from time to time.

Our web site is http://www.ocl.net.

Hope to hear from y'all.

Hi Sam,

Welcome to WebJunction. I'm sure your experiences with CAP will bring an interesting perspective to different forums on this site. We hope to hear more from you!

I'm wondering what you and your fellow librarians in Canada are thinking about CIPA and the recent Supreme Court decision here? You may want to check in on the discussion in the Library News forum.

Have fun!

Hello Sam,

Would you and/or your colleagues be interested in talking with some members of the WebJunction community about your program as a possible library of the month feature? It would be a great (additional) avenue to get the word out...perhaps you also know of some other libraries or programs we can highlight.

Also, don't forget about WJ Awards. I encourage you to look at that section from the "community center" and consider submitting details about your program!

Best and again it's good to have you aboard.

Hi Folks!

I'm Carson, and have been working in library technology for the past nine years, almost everywhere between the public service desk to the wiring closet and beyond!

For three years I worked for the High Plains Regional Library Service System, a multi-type agency providing consulting and advocacy for all publically-funded libraries in a nine-country area in northern Colorado.

I was also co-director of the ASCC project (Automation System Consortia - Colorado http://ascc.lib.co.us)which has joined a large number of small-to-mid-sized libraries together to obtain automation services via ASP (Application Service Provider) technology.

It's great to be here -- thanks for the opportunity to post!

Welcome to the WebJunction forums Carson.

We have a bit in common. I have spent the past few years helping rural libraries in my area get wired and have also found myself everywhere from behind the circulation desk checking out books to dwelling in the cellar drilling through concrete floors to thread those network cables!

My name is Jackie and I'm a second-year MLIS student graduating in June 2003. I'm focusing on reference and I'm interested in Web Junction because it seems like a good way to get connected with other professional librarians about what's really going on out there in the field. I'd like to talk about the things I'm learning in the classroom in the context of what many of you are out there experiencing. I look forward to learning from all of your experiences and conversations.

3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
I'm a branch manager with the Seattle Public Library in Seattle. Our system has worked really hard for public access and I'm proud of everything we have to offer: we have a traveling laptop lab that works its way around a number of the branches for local training; we implemented a timing and reservations software for managing public access terminals; we have a strong equal access to technology program. I am really glad to have the space to talk about these programs, because they're really working for us. I'd love the opportunity to discuss with other librarians thinking of implementing any of these type of programs.

Hello Brian, and thanks for posting on All Aboard.

It sounds like your library has a number of things going for you - have you seen any new challenges with current budget problems in your library? We'd love to hear from you on how and whether public access programs will be managed (and maintained) through the budget problems. Will the programs you mentioned be affected?

Thanks,

Chrystie
RE: RE: RE: Brian Bannon, Branch Manager
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
You're right, there are concerns with budget in many libraries, including SPL. However, there are still ways to do effective programming with the public. Even in good budget times, it's important to set priorities. At SPL, we looked first at the basic computing needs of library users. We found that many needed basic computer sills (mouse, windows, etc.) and wanted to improve their software skills (MS Word, Excel, etc.). Before developing new classes, we first looked at our resources and determined we didn't have the staff to offer BOTH software training AND basic skills training. We looked into the Seattle community and found there are a number of community technology centers (CTCs) already offering free or reduced cost software classes... so rather than offering them ourselves, we decided to refer patrons to CTCs and focus our training efforts on basics skills and teaching library related applications (catalog, databases, etc.).

While most of our classes target new tech users (with titles like Computer Basics I or Internet basics II), every class teaches learning something about using the library and library resources. Even in our most basic classes, we practice mouse skills by entering text and searching for titles in the library catalog. We've found that by combining basics interests/needs with library skills attracts students. And they get a lot more than just 'basic skills' they also learn how the library information is organized, and how to access it--- information literacy. In the end, we found that setting clear objectives and priorities, we can offer high quality training when necessary.

I am excited to hear what lots of people have to say about their experiences and questions with Public Access Policies and Practices. In our world today how we encourage responsible use without placing unnecessarily restrictive barriers for people is an interesting and complex issue. Budgets certainly are affecting nearly everyone in the library world. Check out Brian Bannon's introduction post, as he touches on this item, though he comes from a larger library system. Whitewright is a rural town located about 60 miles of Dallas, Texas, with a population of 2,000. However, several area communities do not have a library, so we cover a large bi-county area.

I've been the library director for almost three and a half years now. Luckily the library was already automated when I began, but we're working on expanding and enhancing our technology.

I hope the forums will become a place where librarians can not only ask and answer questions, but share all those "neat tricks" they've learned over the years.

Hi!

My name is Brenda Hough and I'm the moderator in the technology planning forum. I got involved with WebJunction when I was working in the US Library Program at The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. I spent 4 1/2 years there, traveling to public libraries around the country, doing technology training.

This fall, I started working on my PhD in library and information management at Emporia State University in Kansas. I don't have my dissertation topic formalized yet, but know it will involve libraries, technology, and learning. It may also involve online communities and their role in technology learning. If you have ideas, send them my way! Also, stop by the technology planning forum sometime!

I look forward to more conversations soon.

Thank you,

I am envious of the time you spent traveling and participating in the Gates program. If my state had not been #49 out of 50 in the library program I certainly would have been lobbying my trainers to draft me onto the team. To me that would have been a dream job!

Again, I look forward to joining the Web Junction community!

It is very normal to feel a bit nervous when you first start posting. The feeling is even more pronounced when you are new to a place that has ongoing conversations between people who seem to be well acquainted. It is like arriving late at a party where you do not know anyone but everyone else seems to know each other. That can be a bit daunting but in most cases those friendly conversations are only taking place because all those other people went ahead and hit the post button and in the process got to know each other a bit.

I am glad to have you join the conversations and I echo Chrystie's post by saying that you will find the people who post at WebJunction to be a very friendly bunch.

Well, *I* do -- but I don't know where yet in the "library" world. There are colleges going inceasingly virtual that need that mix of skills -- but only a very few would recognize it and I doubt if more than one or two of those would see this as a library issue.

I think that *will* change, but don't know when.
RE: distance learning and online community
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
Betha, I think that both distance learning and online community are certainly terms that are beginning to apply more and more to many libraries. Consider the elderly, the rural community which may have great distances to travel to the nearest library, those who may be housebound due to illness, etc.

The internet has given these people access to us in ways they did not previously have. I see it as a challenge for libraries to make more remote access available to their patrons.
RE: RE: RE: RE: Welcome Betha!
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
There is a lot of discussion in our program about the redefinition of "library" in the future. There is no concensus on where things are heading. I'm taking cataloging, collection development, and reference classes to make sure I'm covering some traditional bases.
RE: covering your bases
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
It's great to cover your bases, Betha. It certainly helps to bring a broad academic experience to the profession. Reference was and still is my favorite though. Nothing like the thrill of solving a true stumper!

Speaking of, there's a stumper in "policies" right now about finding a list of filtered terms. If you're the kind of librarian that gets all excited about the tough ones, check it out!
RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: Welcome Betha!
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
The thing is -- librarianship was *always* database management. It's just that the data chunks were pretty big. :-)

Of course, that's on the collection end of things -- output is considerably different!
RE: distance learning and online community
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
Oh, I can see why you are stumped Liz. It would take a pretty hefty library budget to even afford laptop lending, nevermind the connection problem.

I may have been unclear in my post. When I mentioned our challenge of giving stay-at-home patrons more access, I meant access to our library resources via their own computers and net connections. Loaning computers is way out of our league budget-wise.
RE: RE: distance learning and online community
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
hi maddog -- I work a great deal on the elearning portion of WJ, and want to help library staff help give their patrons more ability to access computers and the internet from their homes. But how does a library do that for patrons? Got any good ideas? Laptop lending programs are great IF you have internet access already from home...

Hi Everyone

I'm Larry and have the title of Operations Director at a smaller Illinois library (pop. 20,000).

Just about everything is in my job description, except computers, but since we only have 10 employees you end up doing it anyway. I've enjoyed what I've read on the site so far.

Hello everybody, and Wow, this is a little different from other message boards that I am part of so please forgive me if I post this wrong.

My name is Jerry and I am in the technology department at our library here in Ohio. I am working on an A+ Certification right now and hope to test soon. I have many questions but will check to see if any of the ones that I have are posted before asking.

Hey Jerry,

Welcome to our community and the discussions on All Aboard. It's great to have you.

You may read in some of our discussions that our boards are quite limited right now, but we're getting new software soon! Stay tuned...

In the meantime, post away...

No one will bite you if you post something that has already been discussed. emoticon We promise...

how did you hear about us Darci?

glad to have you with us!
RE: RE: RE: ally nice to meet you, Darci!
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
Let's see, I've been living in the Portland area for 17 years now and have done all sorts of stuff. I started doing firmware development, then followed that with user interface design and development (X-Window system on Sun Microsystem boxes mostly), fell in love with Mosaic, started doing a lot of web programming and web admin stuff (including corporate webmaster for a certain chip maker) moved onto doing Unix admin work for a certain shoe maker, got into project management and called it quits ;)

I'm currently looking for work with a strong preference for a para-professional position in any library environment but would consider other part-time work in technical writing or software development... but the market it rather tight around here still.

I heard about you through the library director at Cornelius -- the library was featured as the library of the month this past September and then again at the Gates transition seminar this past Monday.

Glad to be here! emoticon
RE: Introduce Yourself to WebJunction
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
Hello, I'm Darci and I'm coming at you via the Cornelius Public Library in Cornelius, OR. I'm a volunteer here and have begun doing more and more computer support this great little library.

I'm currently enrolled in the University of Washington's distance MLIS program. I have 15 years experience in the high-tech industry and decided it was time for a change. I'm still in the process of narrowing down my interests in the field of library and information science.

As a long time Internet user and advocate of using technology to build community, I'm happy to be here!

Cheers!
RE: RE: moving from one field to another
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
Oregon and I believe Washington (state) were some of the last areas to receive their Gates machines. Official support through the Gates Foundation ends on 12/18. This seminar was a 4 hour session to help libraries transition from full support.

I learned quite a bit because the original training and installation was completed shortly before I joined the library.

What is a Gates transition seminar?
RE: vealing
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
ahhhh, thank you. Yes, we in New Hampshire were also on the tail end of the grant program but that isn't such a bad thing since we got the newest computers!
RE: RE: vealing
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
Harry, the transition seminars happen in every state, but to my knowledge - the Gates foundation is dependent on the state library for getting the word out that they're happening. Some are really well attended, others are not. Look for upcoming transition announcements in the WJ newsletter, Crossroads. We're trying to help get the word out about them so that more people can attend.
RE: tired support
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
But don't the Gates computers come with a full year of support regardless of how late in the game my state got in? We have only had our computers since June.
RE: RE: tired support
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
Wow - guess I'm glad we here in Montana got in the Gates game early so we had 3 years' support (even if we did get NT machines that are now totally out of warranty!). The training occurred before I fell into this position, too, but the Gates support was great.

Excuse me - I've posted in other forums but never really introduced myself. Pam from Bozeman, previously Children's librarian, still part-time Reference, and now almost full-time Technology Assistant. Hadn't read this forum before, so it was great reading about people I've run across in other areas!

And, I am always nervous before clicking Post Message, because no matter how careful I am, I always find a typo afterward.

The classes in the Learning Center are awesome too - I did the Excel course prior to attending an intermediate Excel session here in town, and it was great preparation.

Happy Holidays to all!
RE: ady for Christmas
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
It's a pleasure to meet you Pam. Thanks for posting a bit about yourself. I guess there are good and bad sides to each end of the Gates grant.

I have had a similar job trajectory at my library, starting out doing strictly library stuff and winding up doing strictly tech stuff. Sometimes I do still get a chance to work the Circ desk. Last weekend the library was closed due to a blizzard. I made it there in my 4WD to do network stuff so I opened up to the public and checked out some books to the hearty few who had ventured out...

Have you tried any of the other classes in the Learning Center yet?
RE: RE: ady for Christmas
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
What a trooper, opening in a blizzard! I'm sure those folks were glad to find you there after making the effort to venture out themselves.

Haven't done any other classes yet - I'm taking a Dreamweaver seminar in town next month, so may look at that course ahead of time -we're using that for the web page, and I'm getting better at it but could use a few pointers. I plan to start talking up the Learning Center among staff here.

P.S. - love the Just 3 Words topic! Very clever of you...
RE: turning to my roots
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
To be honest I sort of miss working the circulation desk. I really enjoy my computer duties but I was sad when I moved away from town and could no longer do the hours on the front desk.

It is a wise idea to take the online course here before attending a seminar. I always prefer to have my feet wet if possible before jumping into something new.

Thanks for the compliment on the three words topic but I can not take credit. It is a popular topic at Electric Minds and I have introduced it at several other online forums since. It has always been met with similar enthusiasm. That topic has been around now in so many variations that I can not even say for sure whose idea it was in the first place, though a search of my archives could prolly answer that.

Actually, there are several other fun word game type topic ideas that have proven to be great fun at other forums in the past. They deal with acronyms, neverending stories, posting using words of only a single syllable apiece, etc. etc. I didn't want to turn the Getting Started forum into nothing but silliness right off the bat but I may just start up a couple of new threads to have fun with. A little bit of silly stuff here and there can really brighten a forum up!

Oh Pam - I got a wicked sunburn the very first day. I couldn't help but over indulge as we left behind 3 feet of fresh snow from the past two storms. I guess it rained a lot at home while I was away because most of the snow is gone now. However, This was the scene in my driveway a couple of days before we left!

WOW! That looks a lot like my driveway (different vehicle, of course!). After the ski hill finally opened, they had too many people show up and had to turn folks away. Go figure! But roads are getting cleared so we are ready for the next big storm.

Sorry about the sunburn - those tropical rays are so much stronger, and it's hard to resist...

Happy New Year!

I was surprised to come back from my trip and see that most of our snow had washed away. I guess there was some heavy rain and warm temps while we were gone. I knew I was at risk of a huge sunburn but I could not help myself. The weather was so beautiful and the beaches were so fine! Our hotel even had a pretty decent beach but the next time I go there I want to stay Here

Greetings to all,

My name is Paul and I am Supervising Librarian for Technology and Training for Community Library Services at the Newark Public Library in New Jersey.

My responsibilities include the mgmt. and delivery of training for public and staff in the branches and for Main Library staff in the Community Library Services Department.

I also support and administer a group of 20 or so technology liaisons (librarians) that support the IT departments? Help Desk efforts.

Like you, Christie, we also have a pet fish that we've named Fred. I am married and have two daughters, 10 and 14. I have a degree in music and my primary instrument is the guitar. I have also studied sean nos. It is style of Irish singing that predates "When Irish Eyes are Smiling? by at least a couple of hundred years. My favorite hobby is "dad".

Hello Paul. Welcome to the forums. We have a lot in common, except I got all boys in the kid lotto. I hung up my electric guitars a couple of years back because I could not take the second hand bar smoke any more. I still do enjoy strumming the acoustics with my older boys. Is sean nos an a capella type of singing or are instruments involved? Can you point me to any samples?

Paul, welcome! I had a little tear come to eye when I read your post because my little fish Scarlett has passed on since I wrote my introduction. :-( I had him for more than 3 years, and I guess that's a long time for a pet-store beta. He was a wonderful friendly little guy with a lot of personality.

Anyway, so glad you found the WJ and I look forward to hearing more from you on All Aboard.

Hello all. I'm Janet Eklund, Administrator of Library Operations, at the New Hampshire State Library. I have been reading, watching and learning from WJ for several months and it's time for me to dive into the great discussion here. New Hampshire just received its Gates Training Grant in December. When I wrote the application, I thought it would be neat to utlize WebJunction as one of our training tools for our training program. The WJ folks liked the idea and so did the Gates people! Thanks to Chrystie Hill for all her encouragement for our grant proposal! It is our hope to bring our NH librarians aboard this community as we implement our training curriculum this spring in addition to making WJ a tool of choice for technology learning and information seeking. I see there are just a few NH librarians in the member directory, but that is sure to increase. This is truly a great portal and it's a pleasure to have a chance to finally converse with all of you!

I coordinate the Statewide Virtual Reference Project for the Washington State Library and am always looking for sites that consolidate library-related materials. Web Junction has great potential. We've done some interesting things over the past three years--offering a unique, effective and enjoyable training curriculum for virtual reference, supporting grant projects, developing marketing tools and methods, and more. Currently, we're working on a toolkit that libraries will be able to use to evaluate their vr service.

Hi - I've been feeling guilty about not introducing myself, even though I mostly read - though sporatically - and don't post. I'm Pat Kilmain, Director of the Palmer Public Library in Palmer, Alaska. We are a small city of 5,000, with a service area population of about 15,000. We are in a network of 7 libraries sharing a catalog and patron database. I enjoy reading WJ when I have the time, and look forward to meeting some folks at PLA.

A hearty welcome to Pat and Ann. It's really great to see some new people joining the forums. Every new voice enhances the overall value of WebJunction. Working in a rural library myself, I feel this is a truly awesome place to connect with others who are in similar situations and facing the same sorts of problems, technical or otherwise. Please do not be shy or hesitate for a moment to jump into any topic or start some new ones!

Hi! I'm Ann Perrigo, director of a small/medium public library in southwestern Michigan. I feel a little out of my league here--although technology certainly is part of my everyday life, both at work and home, I don't have much expertise, and providing technology to our patrons or dealing with tech issues is not the biggest part of my job. (I lean more toward collection development and cataloging!)

But now I know what my 14-year-old daughter means when she talks about introducing herself to a new forum! I'm sure hers are much more interesting than mine! :-)

I will have to ask my two techies to join in as well!

Ann, welcome to All Aboard! Our forums are very interesting, I bet even your daughter can't compete! emoticon But I hope you'll find online community life as enthusing as she does! I love it...and there's a great group of good folks here. How did you find us?
RE: RE: Introduce Yourself to WebJunction
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
I guess I should bite the bullet and jump in here. I work in a small town library, just part-time. We have about 6,000 residents; am unsure what our patron base is. I do know that my director is amazed at the amount of reference questions we are getting lately. I think it is because we are a town on the verge of great growth and are having growing pains.

I came to library work from retail: I managed a bookstore for 7 yrs., and also had a blast working in a music store. When I started at the library, I couldn't stand the lack of music and found myself humming almost all the time! I can control myself mostly, now, but I occasionally whistle under my breath.

Last year for St. Patty's Day, I dragged my boombox into work and played Celtic CDs. I don't know how anyone else felt, but I loved it. Now to get them to let me listen to folk, or punk, or bluegrass, YEARGGH! {sorry, I DID vote for Dean...}

Hi, I'm Saul Amdursky. I'm the director of a primarily urban library serving about 120,000 people in Southwest MI. I was impressed with the program at PLA and decided joining would be a good idea. On a professional level I'm very interested in how other urban centers deal with increasingly common issues of serving the poor, recruiting and creating a comfortable environment for a diverse clintele, and maintaining service offerings to traditional clienteles. Other than that I have an ongoing interest in how revenues are generated by public libraries in each state. I absolutely love stories about various funding anomolies. E.g. how many of you know that in Michigan libraries across the state have a vested interest in crime. About $30 million dollars is annually generated by traffic violations and other misdemeanors (these are called penal fines) and distributed to public libraries. Anyway look forward to chatting with many of you.

Welcome to WebJunction Saul. If you have not done so already I encourage you to check out both the Fundraising/Development forum and the Public Access Policies & Practice forum. If the exact issues you mentioned are not being discussed there you may want to start a few new topics!
RE: RE: Hello Saul
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
Lovely to meet you Saul; welcome to our community!

Did you visit us at PLA during the Saturday program, or at the member's reception on Thursday?

Either way, I certinaly look forward to hearing more from you on 'All Aboard'.

As you can see, sometimes topics get picked up and pushed forward in these larger & more general ones, but if you have a specific &/or pressing question or interest that doesn't fit into a topic already posted, it's best to start a new topic in whichever forum seems most appropriate.

Again: welcome, welcome!

PS: the vested interest in crime stat is truly alarming! what has the discourse been around this topic thus far?
RE: RE: RE: Introduce Yourself to WebJunction
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
Talk to anyone in a Michigan public library and get a different opinion. Penal fines have been a funding stream for libraries since Michigan's first constitution. We actually generate 2 to 3 times the amount of revenues in penal fines as we do in direct state aid. All kinds of problems associate with this revenue stream (impossible to plan, inconsistent from county to county, dependent on police enforcement, dependent on district judges splitting penalties between court costs and fines, etc.) but most of us would love to have a weigh station in our county to get all those overweight trucks. I suspect a number of us might endorse decriminalization of most drug convictions and like to see them go to a fine basis as well.

wow! serious business for library people, with so many other things to worry about.

did you see or hear about our live meeting last month with Steve Coffman - alternative funding for libraries?

Worth a look. You can find it in the Policies & Practices section, under "funding" and then "funding strategies". Just click the Live WebJunction Event link in the resources box.

Enjoy!
RE: paying debts to society
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
I think the penal fine to libraries plan is a great idea! Here in New Hampshire we are told that state lottery profits are given to public schools but it is unclear how much of those profits actually see their way there. I think both ideas are tremendous and should be implemented on even larger scales in every state!

Wow - setting up an all volunteer library with zero funding must surely be a daunting task! I hope you will find WebJunction to be a helpful resource in your quest. It is truly a small world, made all the smaller by the internet. I am fresh from reading another post from you that tells of our shared family name and now I see that your town is not at all far from Hatch Valley Middle School where one of my dearest online friends teaches 7th grade!

My wife suffers terribly from lack of daylight during the winter. She is a state office cube dweller in a windowless building. We bought her one of those artificial sunlight simulator boxes and it has been a great help this year...
RE: Hello Ailesia
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
Hi Ailesia. We have seen similar effects here in New Hampshire with local industries closing down and killing off small town economies in the process. It is not a happy thing. How long has the glass factory been closed? Is there any chance they may have some old computers they may be willing to donate to your library? Most local businesses are often good bets for used equipment donations as they are bitten regularly by the upgrade bug...
RE: Hello Edwards
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
Your English is just fine. Welcome to the WebJunction community. The internet erases distance and geography and puts us all on an even plane. I am sure there is much we can learn from you as well. Is your library a rural or urban one?
RE: RE: ceptive to sunlight
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
My husband uses one at home, and we try to put as many full-spectrum bulbs in the library as we can afford. Fortunately we have lots of windows so when it's sunny out we really notice. Like today!
RE: RE: Hello Edwards
3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
It is wonderful to meet people from other countries here! We will be able to share a lot of experiences and information. Do people come to your library to use the internet? Are there internet cafes available in town instead? In our travels we found it was easy to find places with internet computers, something our country doesn't seem to do as well.

Hello! I'm Rebecca Ryan, Reference Librarian with the South Pasadena (CA) Public Library. I graduated several years ago from Emporia State University's Distance Program in Denver, Colorado - a fine program, indeed. During my studies, I was very interested in the Public Librarian-as-WebMistress, and fought hard to establish this for myself in Colorado. Alas, all doors were shut. So I came back home to SP as a Local History Librarian, a very satisfying position. But as things go, I've recently been asked to take on the City's website - effectively bringing me full circle in my career. I'm extremely excited of the possibilities, but have a lot of catching up to do. Thanks for being here to help me do that. Best, Rebecca

Hello,

My name is Daryl; this is my first time using webjunction & posting to the message board.

I work in a town library in Roanoke Indiana.

I have a computer problem.

Today when we turned on the computer it automatically shuts itself down & gives a notice that it is shutting down & will restart.

What can any one suggest I try?

Thank you,

Let me see here - how long does the computer stay on before shut-down?

Is it possible to do a virus update and scan to make sure you don't have a new bug?

Ha! I thought most Library Staff would have found Wildcat on their most desperate moments in life. When I was a youngin' I found beer to be... not like Cool Aid. So I picked out the strongest stuff to do the job. And do it quick. Pretty soon Wildcat and I had a close bond. It's the swill of beer but I love it. Oh, by the way, just discovered the courses in the learning center, WOW! I'm hooked.

heheh

Funny you should say so. My maddog username comes from the legendary MD 20/20 which, if you are like me, you may remember from your wayward youth as the wine that packed the most punch for your buck (even though it tasted like turpentine). I drank so much of that stuff when I was a young fool that the maddog name that we used to describe the wine became appended to me as well, hahaha! Nowadays I have no nicknames but I didn't want a boring online username so I reached back into my sordid past for inspiration...

A happy hello SusanR, pustaka_birdlife and goldspk. It is great to see you all posting in the forum!

Susan, we are almost neighbors. I live near Concord NH now but once lived in South Hampton NH which is just over the state line from Amesbury Mass where one of the historic Mary Baker Eddy homesites is located. The website for your library at http://www.marybakereddylibrary.org is very impressive. I like the Flash animated bits in particular.

Pustaka, I am CURious about your psedonym. Are you a bird watcher?

Jerry, I have a good friend in another online community who works for the water commission down your way. She loves to taunt us with weather reports during the dead of winter!

Hello everyone!

My name is Ryan and I am the Information Systems Technician for the Bernards Township Library in NJ! I was just recently hired here a few weeks ago and directed by the reference librarian to check out this website!

I browsed around in several different areas and was very thrilled to become part of this community. I am sure I will be answering questions as well as asking questions during my career here at the library.

I am pretty talented in the Web Design field and yes Chrystie, I have already checked out the Web Development category. Very Interesting! Currently, I am in the process of redesigning http://www.bernards.org/library to give it a more professional appeal as well as a more convenient layout for the patrons!

Well, its wonderful to be a part of this new community and I look forward to becoming a mentor and a student!

Greetings! And welcome to the conversation at WebJunction. We hope you find this a useful place as you continue your MLS studies. You might find the student & faculty lounge of interest, or some of the other forums in Staff & Professional Development.

Also, because we already have an introduction topic going, we'll prob move this one in a few days into "Introduce Yourself to WebJunction" in this forum. Hope to see you around!

Hello everyone. I'm a new member of the WebJunction team and am helping to coordinate the Spanish Language Outreach Program, which launched earlier this month. In the next week or so we'll be posting more information about the program on the site, as well as launching our program-specific message boards. If you're interested in learning ways to meet the technology needs of Spanish-speakers in your community, you'll want to watch our progress over the next year or so and see how the program unfolds. Looking forward to interacting with you all online. We welcome your thoughts and ideas for our program!

We're so glad you're working with us on Spanish-language services in Libraries. I for one can't wait to see how your program progresses. It sounds like you'll have a lot of things to share with the entire community about best practices for better outreach to spanish speaking patrons. Please do keep us in the loop as your project progresses.

Intro & Stuff
Posted: Sep 28, 2004 5:54 PM

I wanted to let you all know about myself, as I said I would in the Monosyllabic game. I graduated with my MLS in August and currently I am the Media Specialist for the Denison Memorial Library at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. I enjoy what I do and the people I work with. I have discovered that I am kind of a reference junkie and that is the area that I would like to move into. I am excited to be a part of this wonderful profession and among great people.

Ok, enough shameless self promotion, right maddog!

Hey Spuds, welcome! It's great to have you join us, and we love it that you're from a university health sciences library. most of us around here are public library folk, but we're growing and branching out every day.

Speaking of, I'd like to move your topic into the existing "Introduce Yourself to WebJunction" topic. It will help us keep an otherwise unruly forum (all that socializing! ) a bit more organized. Cool?

Welcome, Spuds. We are in the same graduating class of Aug '04. I also got bit by the reference bug when I worked the desk at our undergraduate library. I think many of the skills of a good reference librarian are the same, no matter what setting you're in. Have you tried 'virtual reference'?

Maybe you will have something to contribute to the forum on Reference here on WJ.

I'm a reference junkie too. Love reference. I used to volunteer for the Internet Public Library. What a blast! Now I use Question Point with my local public library, as a patron. I think it's really fun doing digital reference from the patron side, but I like doing it on the librarian side too. Don't get much opportunity for it these days.

I'm Hector, and have been working in technology and bilingual library services for the past fifteen years, almost everywhere between the public service desk and collection development to the wiring closet and beyond!

For five years I work for the Des Plaines Public Library, as Coordinator of Computer and Technical Services.

I am also Chair of International Relations of REFORMA,(http://www.reforma.org) and the Americas and Sister Libraries ALA Committees (http://www.ala.org/ala/ourassociation/othergroups/sisterlibraries/sisterlibraries.htm.

I'd like to work with any international or local group that use technology to help unserved communities breaking down language and cultural barriers.

Hello All,

My name is Wendy and I'm very pleased to meet you! I'm currently working in technical services at a large-ish academic library, but I hope to break into reference work after I obtain my MLIS.

I look forward to utilizing all of the tools offered here at WJ (especially web design!), and to sharing experiences/frustrations with all of you in the process.

Personal notes: I fight heavies (sword and shield) in the SCA (Medieval reenactment society), absolutely adore OE and ME literature (I'm currently fininshing up my undergrad in English Literature), and I have the most wonderful kitty-kat in the world (named "Tibet")! I'm also a "modified" librarian with multiple tattoos and piercings, hoping to break the stereotypical bun-and-cardigan image. However, nothing's visible when my hair is down and I'm wearing normal clothing, so I can go incognito should my appearance affect my chances of obtaining a reference job!

Regards,
Wendy

Hey Wendy, welcome! I have a few tats myself; but ask anyone who knows me and they'll tell you that I look more like the typical librarian with these vintage cat frames (that and the fact that I'm currently wearing a cardigan) - a mix of all the stereotypes, I guess. Maybe I like to pretend I'm being ironic. emoticon Reference is the closest to my heart of anything that we librarians do. It's so much fun. My favorite job to date (besides my current one, of course) was working for the editors at Encarta as a researcher. It was like super-reference. A million different digital reference questions a day, all of them difficult ... but so rewarding. Anyway, thanks for joining us. It's great to have you....BTW: what library are you in?

Hi!

My name is Allison and I'm the IT at our library in rural western NY. I started as a clerk here before we automated or installed our first network of PC's in 1997. Last year we migrated with our library system to a new automation system - a big challenge! I'm currently in the process of completing our annual PC replacements, and the Gates Security Tool forum has already been a big help!

I love it that there are always new things to learn and try out. :-)

Wow! Annual PC replacements (*drooling*)

Welcome to the forums Allison. I am curious, did you only use the Gates Security Tool or did you also install Centurian Guard on your new PCs? I recently ran into some problems installing Centurian Guard on some new computers at one of my libraries...

Chrystie, it is too late to have that moving experience or I fear we would end up hauling Allison's intro into the new topic. I will start a new topic and repeat my post there. I will even show you another one of mine if you show us one of yours - woo woo!

12:58 PM EST 12/13/04 as a reply to < maddog >.
Hi,

Only briefly getting off topic, I only installed the Gates Security Tool. I had enough trouble with copying that (posted in the appropriate forum).

We ran 4 PACs without Centurion Guard for over a year without problems, although I don't worry so much about the PCs that have it now. Lower cost or better sleep at night? It's a toss up. :-)

True. We love our Centurian Guards but I did have some problems getting them to run in some new non-Gates computers that didn't have floppy disk drives...

Hello all,

This is my first posting to WebJunction. I'm a Colorado librarian and I work at a medium sized public library in the northern part of the Denver metro area. Besides the library, a couple of things I love are antiquing and pugs - as in dogs, not pugilists. ;) I have two pugs, Maggie and Lily. They're 3 years old and are siblings. I love them dearly, but I don't recommend getting litter mates. It took these girls at least 6 months to learn their own personal names, and don't EVEN get me started about the challenges of housebreaking 2 dogs at once.

I also care deeply about intellectual freedom. I'm a member of the Intellectual Freedom Committee for the Colorado Association of Libraries. I'll be moderating an Intellectual Freedom forum here on WebJunction. You'll soon find the IF forum under the Policies & Practices category.

Cheers,

Hi, I'm Jen. I just found this site, and thought I'd give a quick introduction. I'm the assistant librarian in a small Boston law firm. Hello Library People,

I'm Rian and I direct one of four campus libraries at a tech. college library system in Saskatchewan, Canada. Somebody mentioned above about being a "jack-of-all-trades" and that hits the nail on the head...and I wouldn't have it any other way.

So it's -38 Celsius this morning in Regina - at least it's colder in Saskatoon! I better get back to my Dreamweaver MX online course.

Thanks, Webjunction folks! I've come by here on and off for quite awhile but I think it's going to become a part of my "daily web rounds".

Cheers,

Welcome Jen and Rian! I'll bet many librarians fit the "jack-of-all-trades" description, some out of necessity, but many because we like variety and are open to acquiring new knowledge and skills.

Rian, I spent some time in the interior of Alaska, so I have a clue what -38 C feels like. I can't say that I miss it. ;)

I'm Vanessa, and I'm in my last semester of library school at UT-Austin.

So, a little about me. Well, I have two dogs (Buddy and Prissy), two frogs (Selma and Patty), and I'm just a big animal-lover. I'm originally from New Mexico, but I've been living in Austin for the past two years (although I'm sure I'll be moving again when I graduate). I'm particularly interested in special librarianship, and would really like to enter the legal field, providing legal information services in a non-profit/public-service setting.

Hi ya! My name is Sheila Morrissey and I work at the Eunice Public Library in Eunice, New Mexico as a Library Technician. I have worked here for almost 3 years now and loving every minute of it. I am 35 year old single mother of 2 teens which keep me running. I have 3 cats,1 dog and several fish. I like online gaming, reading, tinkering with my computers, traveling, seeing new places and meeting new people.

Where is Eunice? We're looking for a small town to spend winters in - my husband has gone to Mexico this winter, but I'd prefer something stateside, so am trying to compromise. If I'm going to spend time there, it needs to have a library (and obviously you do!) and maybe some other interesting things for volunteer possibilities. Next month I'm visiting the little town in Mexico where he's been, but can't get excited about buying something there. The southwest would be convenient to drive to, since we're in Montana (and hardly having winter these year anyway!).

Nice to meet you, BTW!

Towns nearby are Hobbs, NM 20 miles, Carlsbad, NM 68 miles, Andrews, Tx 36 miles and Midland/Odessa, Texas 82 miles. Our Library employees 3 currently and as for volunteer working there are some places in Eunice and Hobbs that take volunteer workers. We would love for you to come visit us! Keep me posted on things.

Hello there --

I'm Lisa, I've been working in web development and publishing for the past 10 years (XML, SGML, HTML, project management, information architecture -- you name it) and I'm currently working on my MS-LIS (with an emphasis on Rare Books & Special Collections) at the Palmer School of Library Science at Long Island University.

Today's my last day of work for a while as I'm about to go out on maternity leave; I'm hoping to finish up my degree some time next year and then plan to look for a job in an academic or special library. I have a BA & MA in archaeology as well, so ideally I'd like to work those in somehow, but I'm certainly open to ideas.

Anyway, just thought I'd finally join the community here!

Hello WebJunction folks,

My name is Will Stuivenga (pronounced Stuh - VIN - juh, it's a Dutch name, although that's certainly not how it would be pronounced in Holland!),

I'm the Statewide Database Licensing (SDL) project manager for the Washington State Library, a position I've held for just over a year now. You can find out more about the project here: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/libraries/projects/sdl/

Since Washington is one of the states which has purchased and developed a customized WebJunction presence (wa.webjunction.org), I'm naturally interested in the WJ project, and try to keep up with at least some of what's going on here. Although I have been a member of WJ since before my current job, having joined shortly after WJ was founded, as part of the public access computing sustainability efforts of the Gates Foundation Library Program.

I always appreciate receiving the Crossroads WebJunction newsletter. I especially enjoyed the article on Google and OCLC's Open WorldCat project in the most recent issue http://webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=10306

I always enjoy "I'm Curious George" as well. Keep up the good work, WJ Crossroads people!

My only negative comment about the forums is this: it seems strange to me that when a thread has literally hundreds of entries, like this one, that the default display is oldest message first. It seems like it should be the other way around, most recent displayed first. I almost didn't post, because I initially thought no one had posted to this thread since 2003! How wrong I was, as I discovered when I scrolled down!

But if there is an easy way to resort the messages, I didn't spot it. This would be a useful feature.
Re: Introduce Yourself to WebJunction
1:54 PM EDT 4/6/05 as a reply to Will Stuivenga.
Will, you are a wise man. This would be most useful considering the number of posts we now have in a few topics. Over in "What Do You Want to See on WebJunction" we have for the first time brought up the subject of archiving - for this very reason.

You can select the "last post" link (the member name of the person who made it) from the top level column view, or the topic view itself, to get to the last post in the string quickly ... though this is not completely intuitive, it is one way to get there once you know about it.

I just checked, and it turns out that the feature you've requested has been logged with our development team since June 23, 2004. Unfortunately, it has gotten lost amongst other higher-priority items over these last several months. I am going to append your request to that log, and this will bring it back on the radar. Thanks for reminding us!

Note to all: if you have requests for how things could or should work better - let us know!!! (Squeaky wheels usually get the grease at WJ too emoticon )

Welcome to all the newbies...it's very good to have you joining us.

My apologies to all for neglecting your fine introductory posts. I somehow managed to ride my snowmobile straight into spring, do a triple somersault dismount and land squarely on the seat of my brand new motorcycle without missing a beat. I have not spent a moment indoors that wasn't preoccupied with work work work since I don't know when. I am definitely not complaining because my fresh air quotient is way way up albeit at the expense of my web time. Better late than never let me join Chrystie in extending a warm welcome to the forums to Cindy, Will and Douglas (aka Elmer)

I think I have been in agreement with Will since way back about the newest post display issue. I am fairly sure that has been on my WebJunction wishlist since the first day I arrived here. It just makes no sense to have the default be the oldest posts on top. I certainly value old posts as much as new ones and often search out the nuggets of helpful information they contain, but it would surely add to the freshness and vitality of the forums if the default was newest on top. That being said I promise not to bring it up for another year, hahaha!

Hi Folks
My name is Malavika Muralidharan.... hmmmm....Mala is just fine.
I work with the Arizona State Library in their Library Development Division. I am the Team lead for Web Junction Arizona, a Community Partner of the Global Web Junction and we are doing our training with Chyrstie and Jeff this week. I am excited about this virtual community. I am just beginning to get a feel for this awesome way of staying connected... especially for small rural libraries who find it so difficult to travel to classes outside of their area and whose needs we can't even begin to phathom. I am a big advocate for giving them what ever help we can.
I have been working in/for libraries for the past 30 years of my life. I think the good God was looking out for me when he pushed me in this direction... it is so empowering to be able to find anything you need, with a few key strokes.

I am big big net-worker... at work and in my personal life too..... the kind that ferrets out relatives and friends all over the world using the internet...the kind that logs in and sends little notes to relatives and friends around the world every day.
I just can't even think back to the days before computers and internet. How did we survive?
It is great to see all the postings and read what all the librarians around the world have to share.

Hello! My name is Jason, and I am currently seeking my MLIS through Drexel University's distance education program.

I spent the last 10 years in the US Air Force and, having earned my BA in English last year, decided on a major career change. I left the military and now work as technical writer at The Boeing Company in Seattle. I hope to earn my MLIS by 2006 and find my way into an academic library.

I joined WebJunction for three reasons: (1) To receive the 20% tuition discount at Drexel, (2) to network and make contacts in the world of academic libarianship, and (3) to learn about and keep abreast of the (quickly changing) ethical, legal, and technological issues with which all librarians and information managers must deal.

I am fascinated by the etical and legal challenges of librarianship. I really would like to get involved in the library community, especially dealing with academic and etical issues, so if anyone has any suggestions on how I can get involved (and maybe use my writing skills), please let me know!

Re: Introduce Yourself to WebJunction
11:09 AM EDT 6/11/05 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
Hello, everybody!

I've been a member of WebJunction for about a month now, ever since our excellent State Library liason recommended it. I've done a bit of exploring on the site, and have already found plenty of things to think about and to make myself smarter about.

I was a school librarian for about fifteen years. I started a middle school library virtually from scratch, and after three years moved to the high school level. Now I've moved into the public library arena and am enjoying it immensely. It's such a joy to see patrons smiling, happy, and glad to be here!

I am in a small rural library, and have been for just over a year and a half. I find the size of my operation to have many advantages and few disadvantages. In a small library I've come to know most of my patrons personally, and the people I work with, my trustees in particular, are very committed to making this library the very best it can be. Before the end of this month we will be breaking ground for a long-overdue expansion -- no more shelves that (quite literally) reach to the ceiling. Of course, in an operation as small as this I need to be a real jack-of-all trades: yesterday I stopped working on collection development to install the air conditioner (successfully), and today my trip to the post office to get the mail was postponed so that I could fix the jam in the photocopier (unsuccessfully).

My biggest challenges right now are technology-related: I need to automate our catalog and circulation functions, and develop a website.

I have found the WJ resources related to website development and plan to immerse myself in them very shortly. I have tried using Publisher and Composer to create a website and found that neither met my needs, so I will probably have to break down and purchase something like FrontPage.

I am also looking into Sagebrush and Gateway for my automation -- two rather different approaches, I know. I'd love to hear about your experiences with either, positive and negative.

One of my biggest success stories since coming here was the creation of a monthly newsletter. It is primarily electronic, but after I send it to my subscription list (over 200 subscribers, and the list is still growing), I modify it and print about a dozen copies for distribution at the circulation desk. It has been so successful that I was asked to make a presentation about it to the library directors in my local area forum, the Scrooge and Marley Cooperative, affectionately known as S & M. (Sometime I'll tell you all about the first time I referred to the 'S & M Video Collection' in a Board of Trustees' meeting -- after I explained, they couldn't stop laughing, and over a year later I'm STILL teased about it.)

This was meant to be a short introduction, and it's gone on SO long -- thanks for sticking with me. I hope to become a regular contributor here. I'll be asking for advice about automation and websites, and would be more than happy to answer questions about creating and using monthly newsletters.

I get to work with Harry, who is the best at tech help and getting me logged on here, FINALLY!

I have a new powerpoint presentation about my career as a woman in cartooning, a mostly male profession, it has a lot of cartoons and is both fun and interesting (I hope!). Thanks!

Hmmmm, now that I take a look, I am not sure there are actually any forums built there yet, but as soon as there are I will remind you to check them out.

I hope you can post your powerpoint thingy here because I would like to check it out too. In the meantime, I will direct people to <a href="http://www.stephaniepiro.com" target=_new>your website</a> so they can check out some of your cartoons and such...
My grand introduction (drum roll please)
12:38 AM EDT 6/21/05 as a reply to < maddog >.
Hello all,

I suppose it's time to introduce myself. I just finished my first year of the MLIS program at the University of Washington. I am new to librarianship so the library centered classes opened up a whole new world to me. I am actually more interested in information science at this point. Additionally, I have strong interests in bioinformatics and health informatics. As far as online forums go, I am a long time lurker. However, I intend to change that at WebJunction and hope to catch the "virtual community" bug by participating as much as possible. Unlike many librarians and librarians in training that I know, I don't have an English Lit. background. Consequently, my writing is lacking and I almost feel bad dirtying the Internet with my prose. But alas, I have been around the Internet block long enough to know that I am not the worst and sometimes my grammar even appears comparably exceptional emoticon Again, I am glad to be a member of the community and look forward to conversing with everyone when the occasion permits.

Mark, it is great to have you join the group of active participants. There is nothing wrong with lurking but it is still always better to have more minds in the mix. I seriously doubt your prose would cause the internet to feel the least bit dirty. Thanks for de-lurking!

Hi, Thanks for the welcome! I will definitely check out the NH section.

I do feel really lucky to be able to do two things I love, draw and write cartoons, and work in our wonderful library. I've gotten to really know our town since working there, and our terrific patrons. The cartooning club was so rewarding. The kids were very dedicated, and looked forward to every meeting.

And the writer's group is so much fun. This is the opposite end of the age spectrum. My favorite writer is in her mid-60's. This was something I really wanted to do, as there weren't a lot of programs for adults, except our very active book club, run by our very energetic assistant director.

Um, Harry, what is a ppt file? I'm happy to give a link to my website which is: www.stephaniepiro.com is that legal?
Re: Introduce Yourself to WebJunction

Stephanie, a .ppt file is a Powerpoint file - in other words the actual presentation you made to go with your talk. You can attach it to your post so that people here can see it. Just click the button that says Attach Files right next to the Post Message button and then point to the presentation on your hard drive. It will upload a copy of the file to the server and we can see it. For example, I will attach a file to this post. It is a picture which I took last week when I stumbled into a moose while out fishing....

Now as for the web site link, I actually did drop a link to your site in my earlier post. The netiquette on that works like this: If you came along and said "<i>Visit my web site and buy some T-shirts</i>" and posted a link, that would be considered bad form. But since people were asking to see your artwork and I knew that there was a lot of it available to view on your site, I went ahead and posted the link...

I had my Mom hat on yesterday morning & orthodontist appointments trump co-op meetings, I'm afraid. I was disappointed because it wasn't too far a ride, either. Someday I will just be overwhelmedlibrarian, but not for a few years yet.

In the name of shameless self promotion, did you get to see today's (7/12/05) Keene Sentinel, p.8? Summer reading promotion trumps dead-heading petunias. Unfortunately, there were 6 children who had their photos taken & I've spent the afternoon consoling the broken heart of a 10 year old who was very disappointed she wasn't in the paper today while her brother was...and this is the kid who asked me if she could hold her book upside down. Gee...I wonder where she got that great sense of humor.

Hello everyone!
CWT is the Barton Public Librarian. Now I hope this
sight isn't just for Q and A's...

Saw this library/Shakespeare joke and had to share.

I WAS waiting in line to check out some books at the library desk. Ahead of me a teenager stood empty-handed, shifting his weight from one slim, tightly clad hip to the other. The librarian looked at him enquiringly. "I want a play by Shakespeare," the youth blurted out. The librarian, suppressing a smile, asked gently, "Which one?" The young man shifted his hips again, ruffed up his hair with one hand, cupped his chin between thumb and forefinger of the other, all the while frowning in concentration. Finally he raised his head and looked at the librarian. "William," he replied triumphantly.

Hi there! Just curious as to which prison you're involved with. A good friend of mine was released last spring from a prison in southern AZ and has said several times that reading in prison saved his life. He is now an active volunteer with a program that our library supports called "ReadOut". The program is a probation supplement for young offenders. They meet with a mentor weekly to discuss a book they are reading simultaneously and then the volunteer (ie, my friend) reports back to the minor's PO on the time they spend together.
As a reference librarian, I would like to partner with Benjamin Clifton in an effort to supply the prison he was held in with currently relevant, as well as classic reading materials. I think we can get some great local community support, here in Payson, AZ. I'd like to arrange a press release in the local paper, hoping that Ben's story will inspire our patrons to give. Any thoughts or concerns you might share with me? I'd sure appreciate your input!
Cheers!

My name is Sarah Wisdom, and I am one of the Information Librarians in the Yuma County Library District. I attended the WebJunction presentation at the AzLA conference and got signed up. I think this site is going to be a very valuable resource and a great way to communicate with other library folks. I look forward to chatting with you all!

Like many libraries, we have been taking cues from the "bookstore" model and trying to make our library more user-friendly. One of my (many) current projects is researching how other libraries catalog their Music CD collections. We are leaning towards a simple classification of Genre/Artist, and my director has requested that I gather cataloguing procedures from other AZ libraries to make sure we aren't overlooking anything. We are also planning on adding Feature Films to our collection soon, and need to hammer out a collection policy and cataloguing procedures for that as well. I'd appreciate help on either topic. Thanks!

Welcome, Sarah and bminer1! We're glad to hear from you and your libraries. emoticon

I'll be interested to know what answers you come up with to your cataloguing questions. We haven't had a lot of discussion about cataloguing here in the All Aboard forums --I'm not sure why. I know there are very active email lists for catalogers. I've heard from solo (or small) library staffers that they do some amount of cataloguing regularly, whether or not it's their area of experitise or in their job description. It is kind of essential to housing a collection.

Please share what you find out!

Hi,
IÂ’m Bill Landau, but the kids at the library call me Mr. Bill! I manage the East Flagstaff Community Library in Arizona. This is actually a second career for meÂ…I spent 23 years as a professional photographer. After 2,000 weddings and 4,000 high school senior portraits, I realized I couldnÂ’t keep up with the crazy-bride career my whole life. So three years ago, I got in on the ground level at the Main Library in Flagstaff and worked my way up from there. I guess 23 years of running a successful photography business has transferred into running a library, and I LOVE it!
The Branch Library is such a wonderful work in progress. For 20 years, it was located in a middle school. The public found it difficult to get into the old library and the collection did nothing but collect dust. But 2.5 years ago, we moved into a new location literally across the street and WOWÂ…that made all the difference. We now have 17,000 patrons a month come through our doors and the attendance goes up every month.
IÂ’ve initiated a huge weeding project to rid our collection of dangerously old books (average non-fiction publication date was 1967) and have secured nearly $25,000 in loans this year to update the juvenile and adult collections. My storytimes have become so popular that we have had to add more sessions and go to signups/registrations because I sometimes had 80 or more kids show up.
We just have so much going for us that it is a thrill to go to work each day. Every Child Ready to Read, Get Real/Get Fit for Teens, Parent/Child workshops and much more keeps life hopping for us.
IÂ’m so glad to have discovered WebJunction and hope to learn and contribute regularly.
Thanks!
Bill Landau

Bill,

Thanks for sharing your background. I find it very inspirational! I passed through Flagstaff once and forgot to pick up boots - probably because I found the scenery so nice. Next time I pass through I will check out the library across from the middle school.

In the vain of random association, I have an Uncle Bill that is a wedding photagrapher. But he's still stuck taking pictures...

Hi everyone...

My moniker is "Desert Rat" and my name is Irene. I'm a 22yr Librarian survivor. LOL (Just kidding of course) I've lived in the desert all my life and I have no intention of leaving!
My tenure as a Librarian began in the Youth Room where as a teenager, I fell in love with the library. I credit my former boss for thinking "outside the box" and not just seeing me as a "page" as we were called then. (oh my, I'm dating myself aren't I?) Ha ha I have gone back to school to complete my B.S. I love creating programs, making partnerships and getting the community involved. Up until 5yrs ago, I was creating programs for K-5, now I have the privilege of working and creating programs for the teens. I'm glad I stumbled upon WebJunction what a great idea! I have two teenagers who are great BUT 'teenagers" nonetheless and I love where I live and NO I'm not leaving anytime soon. My kids and I are active in the community the library is able to benefit from that.
Look forward to chatting with you all.... Have a great day!

Hey Christie,

You can find my beautiful desert by heading 2 hrs. east bound from L.A. and west bound to get to L.A. Its a 2 hr drive but TRUST me it's worth it! I do have a pic that I can send.... it was taken 2 years ago when the kids and I went to the SuperBowl in San Diego!

Our library is going thru some tough times right now. We recently got a new Director and with a new director comes change. Some of her ideas are great, others are just wacked! She seemingly implements her ideas in spur of the moment actions, only to turn around and "undo" them. Her inconsistencies really makes her look like she puts no thought or consideration into her decision making. It has put a hardship on employees because it looks like she has no regard for the staff. It's hard to stay positive in that kind of environment and I have never been subjected to what everyone else considers the "real world" workforce.

I have the best job (I think so anyway) ha ha. I love what I do and I'm able to take advantage of many opportunities that have benefited the library AND our community! I hope to be finished with my B.S. in a few years. The one and ONLY regret I have is not finishing my degree! I am still young, so I figure I have time yet.

I will write more later. I'm unpacking from my 4 day Mexican Cruise as I'm typing!
Looking forward to sharing lots of ideas for programs and getting tips on new ones.

Irene

Irene, I love the idea of sharing photos of yourself as part of introducing yourself. I hope you've started a trend here. I'd also love to see a pic of "your" desert. I love the desert almost as much as I love the lush Pacific Northwest --if only I could live in both places!

Your director woes made me think of this article from the I'm Curious, George archives about the "Whimsical Director." It might have some ideas for your situation.

Hey there everyone....Sorry it takes me acouple of days to respond. Blg3, I read AND shared the link "Whimsical Director" with my colleagues and they all loved it!
Our Director make it a challenge but I've told them as long as we stick together and continue to do our job she can't take away our dignity. The problem lies with her coming into a situation where the library WAS a focal point in the community where patrons felt at home. We prided ourselves in giving the best customer service a library could give. If that meant renewing a patrons books again (after they already had been renewed once) because little Sally was in bed with the chicken pox and couldn't get to the library then we did. UNFORTUNATELY she saw this as a 'personal Librarian' service and therefore didn't care what the excuse was, she basically said NO excuses! I agree that some patrons take advantage but there are others whose lives are just upside down and the library is the only place they can go that provides a FREE service they can enjoy! We are afterall a positive environment, right? There has been a drop in patrons coming in and checkout has been at an over all low....She see's this as "we're not doing our jobs" How can one be so intelligent, yet so clueless?

I will write in the am about the programs I create for the teens that I use as MY outlet source. The teens love it and I do it all for them! :-)

As soon as I read your post (three weeks ago!), I thought you might be interested to read one of our Library of the Month stories about the Mathews Memorial Library. The director there is an amazing person, full of community-building ideas. The anecdote that I just love is at the very end of the article. It's about Bette's care and attention for an elderly couple. She definitely goes the distance to make her patrons feel at home. Can you slyly leave a copy of the story on your director's desk? ;)

Your posts in the Youth forums have been great. Keep the stories and the sharing coming!

Hi, I'm Len LoPinto the director of the Paramus Public Library in New Jersey. Many of you might know Paramus as the Mall Capital of the World. Its really tough moving around Paramus this time of the year.
I'll be attending the spanish out reach program at Settle in January. I'm looking forward to learning new ways to reach the community and get them into the library and then sharing.
32% of Paramus has English as their second language. While most of this population is Asian we have a growing population of spanish speakers making up close to 5% of the population. As a literacy volunteer organization we work closely with surrounding towns whose spanish populations are reaching over 15%. and some much more.
Look forward to Seattle.

June Schneider posting in from Toms River, NJ. I am so very excited about being selected to participate in the upcoming training to be held in Seattle Jan. 16-19, 2006. Although my job title is Supervisor of Youth Services in the Toms River Headquarters Branch of the Ocean County Library system (20 branches large), I have a distinct interest and love for Latino outreach and services. Over the past two years I have become more involved in providing services in the library, outreach to the community, and also offering statewide presentations on the topic of Serving the Latino Community. Some of the venues I have presented at include:
New Jersey Library Association (NJLA) Youth Services Forum
NJLA Diversity Forum
NJ Dept. of Education Summer Conference, Aug. 2005: Keeping the Promise: Maximizing Achievement Across the Curriculum
Ocean County Reading Council Fall Conference

I also participated in the state funded World Language Storytelling Project as a pilot site for bilingual storytimes held in Spanish, which was an exciting initiative we will continue with grant funds from a local bank. This prompted the first two presentations stated above.
I am not a fluent Spanish speaker (that's putting it kindly!), but I am not afraid to communicate with my broken Spanish and I seem to have a knack for making people feel comfortable.
In my spare time I serve as Vice President/President Elect of our state association's Children's Services Section (CSS), and am active in our regional cooperative as well as state functions. The most recent issue of our CSS Newsletter, Reflections, focused on literacy. It includes an article I wrote entitled, Latino Family Literacy Boot Camp. I am attaching this as a separate document for any interested readers!
Thanks for welcoming me to the WebJunction community and for providing all these amazing resources in one handy place.

See you in Seattle!

Welcome Len and June!

Len, Paramos may be the Mall Capital of the World, but did you know that the very first version of the mall was the Northgate Mall, built right here in Seattle? It was outclassed long ago, but it still lives.

June, it's encouraging for me to hear that you don't let your imperfect Spanish prevent you from communicating with your patrons. Maybe they appreciate even more your efforts to bridge the language gap. I think some library staff may be afraid to speak in a foreign language that they haven't yet mastered. It sounds like it's the feeling behind the words that communicates the strongest.

In case you haven't found it yet, there's a section on the message boards that is just for the Spanish Language Outreach project. Check it out:

Hi I'm Debbie Maynard and brand new to WebJunction. WebJunction seems like an excellent forum for librarians. I received my MLS from St. John's University in May of 2004. I am currently a director at the Butler Public Library in NJ. I have six years of public library experience. I've worked in most public library departments. I've worked in circulation, technical services, reference (both adult and children departments) and administration.

I am currently involved in two book groups, one with friends and one brand new library book group. I've been a facilitator of a young adult book group and an outreach book group. I've done children's, young adult and adult programs. I have worked in three different library consortiums.

I am interested in learning about new technology and keeping up with current trends. I am also interested in programming ideas.

On a personal note, I have three children, love reading, biking, kayaking, walking and listening to music and books. I am involved in my local PTA organization and like to keep busy.

Congratulations on your degree. It sounds like you've accumulated a lot of practical library experience as well. I am kept on my new technology toes by the Emerging Technologies forum. Some of our avid technology-watching members post their recent discoveries there.

I'm a kayaker myself. So far, I haven't explored any waters beyond the Northwest, but I hope someday to have the pleasure of paddling in some warm water for a change.

Hi Chrystie, We meet again. I have applied for the Rural Library Sustainability Project. I haven't had time to focus on Tech. with our Spanish Lang Outreach taking up much of my time. We are a tad bit behind in this area. My staff and I are lacking the Computer skills and savvy to be leaders in our area. We have many Spanish patrons and seniors who are interested in classes. I have used the lessons, etc from WebJunction, but there are other areas that we need massive improvement...
I hope to learn and grow from this endeavor.

Hi - I'm Alice, and I'm the public librarian in a small town in Oklahoma. Our library serves the school and the community, and by that we are blessed. We have a LMS who teaches in our school system, and we also have an amazing technology guy (also a teacher) who can handle all our tech concerns. When I started working here, nine years ago, I could not turn a computer on without a manual. I've learned a lot since then, but I'm really enjoying the courses I've taken so far, because I felt there were some gaps in my knowledge that needed filling. Many of our patrons have never used a computer, and they want the one-on-one instruction. WebJunction has helped give me the confidence to teach our patrons the basics.

Isn't it amazing to look back and see how far we've come in a few short years? The most important thing is to keep an open mind and energy for lifelong learning, because there's no end to it. Just when I think I've got something down, the next new thing comes along. I veer from "I'm too old to learn another new thing." to "Oh cool, I can see great possiblities from this new thing."

Keep up the great work!

Hi, my name is Gloria. I work at a small, rural public library in Oklahoma. We are new to Webjunction but are excited about the prospects of learning new things to improve our library, secure the sustainability of ongoing programs and borrow/share ideas. Currently, I am wrestling with trying to find a location for our growing summer reading program that has now surpassed the size of our building. An outdoor tent on the library grounds is our best idea so far-now we are searching for funding-any ideas?
My staff and I look forward to being a part of this cyber community.

I'm finally here! I'm Susan Sheldon, Library Director at the Vista Grande Public Library (VGPL), located in an unincorporated subdivision called Eldorado which is about 10 miles Southeast of the Santa Fe, New Mexico city limit. Vista Grande was established as a non-profit corporation because the county wasn't prepared to run a library and Eldorado vetoed incorporation. However, many of the residents in 1998/99 were transplants from other parts of the U.S. and beyond. They knew libraries and wanted easier access than the 30 mile round-trip to the nearest municipal library. With the help of the State Legislature, capital improvement funds were allocated, through Santa Fe County, to build a public library and the Library opened on April 28, 2001with 2400 sq. feet of space. So we're gearing up for our 5th anniversary. I've been involved for 5 years but as director for 3 1/2.

The Library serves about 9,000 people in Southeast Santa Fe County. I'm currently the only paid position and was moved from 32 to 40 hours per week last August. The day-to-day operations are handled by myself and an average of 25 volunteers per week. It has been a phenomenal five years for me, the Library, and the greater community but we are all looking forward to many more years together.

I hope to get to know the WebJunction community as well.

Hello Susan and welcome to WebJunction!

What a wonderful story you have to tell about your library. I really like the fact that the impetus for establishing the library came from the patrons. It's just more testimony to the enormously high value that people in the US place in their libraries.

I'm also a little amazed that you operate with such a large volunteer force. I wonder how you keep them all productive. Volunteers are a great asset, but it is sometimes a full time job managing them.

I hope you find lots of good resources on WebJunction to help you continue doing your great work.

Hello everyone! My name is Genevieve Williams and I work right here in the Pacific Northwest. I'm an academic librarian at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA.

I'm also fresh out of library school and still finding my way in the library profession--my former career paths include a stint at Amazon.com during its early years, a few years as a freelance writer, and a brief but highly enjoyable contract at One Reel, a Seattle arts nonprofit.

My interests are information literacy, computer technology in libraries and academia, and navigating the tenure track!

Anyhow, I enjoy your posts on other listservs and am glad you are contributing to WebJunction as well. By the by, I got a job, which I start 3/27 as a Project Manager of Information Architecture at Lux Group in downtown Seattle. So, I will be in the northwest for a while. It's going to be a rough last quarter as I start work full-time and finish the last 8 credits of the MLIS. Hmm, maybe that's why you have time to contribute, you got a life after school...I can't wait.

Hi, I'm Wendy. I'm a children's librarian in south west Iowa, I've only been here for 6 mo. so everything is pretty new to me, especially this webboard thing.emoticon I got this job as kind of a fluke, when we first moved here I didn't know anyone so I'd bring my kids to the library and hang out talking to the librarian, the only other adult I knew besides my husband. After awhile she asked me if I'd like to try subbing for her, I did that for a few years then when she was ready to retire she asked if I'd like the job. My last child started school this year so the timing was perfect for me to take a job, and I couldn't have picked a better one. I have come to love the work I do here and the children are great, well most of them ;)! On my off hours I spend a lot of time with my kids and if it's warm my husband and I like to take rides on our Harley and go to Motorcycle rally's. Well that's me in a nutshell i guess, although I could probably go on and on, but I'll spare you! emoticon

Finally managed to get back here...guess I don't have quite so much free time as that! Nice to see you here too, Mark. I always enjoy our discussions.

I have both more time and less since finishing grad school. More because, well, grad school was pretty demanding timewise (I know opinions differ on how taxing it was academically), but less because my schedule is more regimented now in some ways.

On the other hand, it's fun to see how some of the more theoretical shtuff I acquired in school plays out in a real environment. This is a pretty small library so I get to do lots of different things. At the moment I'm taking an online usability course from the University of Wisconsin, and working on redesigning the library website. I think the results will be worth the work.

I'm tickled that people like my handle! My undergraduate degree is in music, so it partly has to do with that, but it also seems to me that there ought to be a muse of information, this being the Information Age and all. Infomuse didn't have quite the same ring to it, so datamuse it is!

One reason I'm here is to stay connected to the profession on an informal level, since that's how I often prefer to work. I was hired to bring new ideas to my library, so it's important to me to continue being aware of what those ideas are.

Hello Everyone,

I'm Sandy Bumgardner, Director of the Upshur County Public Library located near Buckhannon, West Virginia. Our library has a service population of 17,689 and serves also as a Service Center for thirteen Affiliate libraries. Having been employed by the library since 1971, I have done everything in the library except Interlibrary Loans and Bookkeeping and have experienced change from serving as Bookmobile Librarian using the old card catalog to a new building with automated catalogs and circulation, public internet access, joining a consortium of over 40 other libraries with a shared catalog and patron database, a change in software systems and plan to add wireless connection in the library. With the neverending changes in technology, I have high expectations that webjunction will be a great place to visit, not only to find helpful information needed to deal with change and help solve problems, but also to contribute any useful information that I have acquired over the years.

Hi Chrystie and everybody else,

I have been mildly and rarely lurking around since Oct. 2005 but now that I am on-board with the Rural Sustainability Continuuim in NY State I guess it is time to actually say something here. I did go to the wonderful WebJunction Reception at PLA in Boston -- my first ever PLA (was that a great conference or what?) and I have a long resume reflecting a career I have much enjoyed at:
http://foxgull.com/resume.html

While one never knows what the future will bring I am kind of hoping that I am in what will be the last spot of my full-time career. I can retire on my NY State pension in about 7 years and then I'd like to do some grant consulting, do some non-library projects, research, write, travel, be available to the grand-kids, and stuff like that --

Thanks,
Rebekah

I want to win that that all expenses paid trip to ALA (I have not been to one of those conferences since I was a library school student) and one of the things we in NY must do to be eligible is to stay active at WebJunction, so for now at least, you are stuck with me.

But thanks for the greeting!

Yes, I do work in a beautiful building, but it has unfortunately been neglected. It needs some work done, as well as that we are long past due on technology planning for sustainability, so I am eager to learn more about advocacy and fundraising, as well as technology planning. Thank you -- I am right now listening to the video of the May presentation on using the TechAtlas Inventory Tool. Thus, I begin! I like the idea of that VBscript -- I'll have to run that one day after hours and save myself tons of work. Getting he computer inventory done will be such an important step for us.

Hello,
My name is Kelly and I am also new to WebJunction and to posting. I am a Librarian Assistant for a public library and am learning new things everyday about integrating the Internet to the Library "experience" for both the patrons and for librarians. I am bilingual in English and Spanish, and am looking to increase the collection with more multicultural materials ( African-American, Spanish, Tongan, French, Pacific Islander) to further expand the possiblilties of our library.

Hi,
I have been a librarian in a small town of around 2500 for about 13 years. I do love my job and during these years have gone from a 1500 sq. ft. building to a new 8300 sq. ft. building. It has been a wild ride and I feel that the ride has been well worth the time it has taken.
I have visited WJ for many different reasons but have not chatted before. I still feel that the time that this takes is somehow not as productive as I can be doing other things. I do think I will enjoy reading about other librarians so will may-be get hooked yet.

Hello from Cecil County Public Library!
1:59 PM EDT 8/30/06 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
It's great to be part of this important project! I look forward to meeting Jim, Jennifer and Michelle - and the team we are building here in Maryland!

Presently I have been working as my library's computer trainer, but our obligations continue to rapidly grow. I'm hopeful that the upcoming training in Seattle (October) will give me further tools to meet those needs.

Thanks!

My name is Dana Applegate and I am the rural library sustainability project trainer for the State Library of North Carolina. I have been a librarian since 1993, graduated from the University of Alabama MLS program. I worked for ten years in a rural regional (three county) public library system in NC and am currently in business for myself as a private trainer. I live most of the year in Panama (not Florida - Central America) where I mostly just enjoy the wonderful weather and the opportunity for leisure.
The project that is dearest to my heart as a trainer is the Master Trainer project of the State Library of North Carolina, for which I am one of the lead trainers. The goal of the Master Trainer project is to "grow" trainers at libraries throughout NC, thus providing on-site professional trainers for staff and patrons at many libraries. It was begun in response to the never-ending need for quality training and the obvious fact that there are never enough training dollars at the state library level to provide all that training. It has been an amazing success, now in existence for more than eight years, has trained over 75 librarians to be trainers, and has created a network of trainers in all types of libraries throughout NC who communicate, work together, and share in lots of different ways. As you can probably tell, I love it.
I look forward to meeting others in Seattle.

Hello,
I am Sherry Backhus and I am just getting started with the State Library of Kansas. I will be conducting and helping with the training of librarians around the state in the use of the wonderful full-text databases that we make available to everyone in Kansas.

I have been a librarian for many years and have worked in Tennessee (long ago) and at the University of Kansas in Lawrence and most recently at Emporia State University. I have worked with the public in all of my positions. The most recent involved coordinating all of the instruction that university students needed to involve them with their courses and all of the information that was available to them. Most often we helped them with subject-specific databases and how they could best utilize them for their class projects.

Before that I was librarian for a "one person library" at the ESU Nursing Program (also in Emporia). I do have a heavy leaning toward the sciences and enjoy working with specialized databases. The advent of Full-Text (and full-pictures, -graphs, etc.) has been such a wonderful development for the student or seeker in all of us!

What exciting times we live in, Sherry

Hello,
My name is Margaret from Estherville, IA. This is my first time on a message board.
I work in our children's dept. and have been here five months and I'm enjoying it. Before this job I worked out of my home for 13 1/2 years as a daycare provider. I feel I was fortunate to be able to still work with children on a different level and ages. I have a husband and three sons ages 16, 14 & 8. They along with the job keep me very busy.
I am looking forward to this training and learning how the library operates. Margaret

Hello! My name is Pam, and I am responsible for children's and young adult services for a small library in Berkeley Springs, WV. I've been here for just about 6 years, and I can honestly say that this has been the best job I've ever had (working for the Lectures Division in National Geographic was a close second...)
I'm mom to 6, with only one left at home (our only son), and grandma to 9 so far. I come from a long line of folks who think that a love of reading is the most important thing we can pass on to the next generation, so I couldn't be in a better place. I've particularly enjoyed building up the readership among our young patrons, as before I got here, there wasn't much in the way of programming or current reading. I'm proud to say that since I've been here, our circulation of childrens books has more than tripled, we have a thriving children's program, and I've even built up a large volunteer group of 12 to 15 year olds, all of whom are wonderful to work with. Our older volunteers and staff really enjoy having them around. I find this all amazing, since when I first arrived, I actually had a volunteer tell me that the library was for adults. I look forward to being a part of this online community, and hope to be an active participant, as much as I can be.

Hello.
My name is Erica Mabry, and I have been a member of WebJunction for a while, but this is my first post to the forums.

A little about me:
- I am currently in the middle of the first quarter of my MS,LIS at Drexel University, and I love it! Easily, the best decision I ever made.
- I live in South Carolina (thank goodness for distance education) and work as a data manager for a child abuse and maltreatment prevention initiative, but I'm looking for library work.
- I almost got a PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology before I figured out that I hated the field. The difference between my current graduate school experience and the other is unbelievable. It really does make a difference when you love what you do.
- I want to work in a public library. I want to do reference work. I either want to work in a rural library or a large library. emoticon
- I am very interested in publishing, and I am about to start working on my first project. If anyone is interested in collaborating on something, I'd love to hear from you. I am interested (currently) in library 2.0 kinds of things, serving the underserved, intellectual freedom stuff in practice (what should librarians on the front lines know? what can they do?, etc.), marketing, etc. Again, I'm very new to the field so these are sure to change and grow as I learn what's already been done. -- It's so frustrating to have so many interests and questions and not have the time to research and read up on things!
- Personally, I am a new vegan (four months), I like to take pictures (especially with old and toy cameras), I'm a dog-person, and I'm trying to learn Spanish.

I have my new e-mail account working now, and am looking forward to our next class. It was so cool when a new patron came in one day to do her college homework and asked about if we had an USB port and could she use it to do her homework, and I knew about it from taking the class and could assist her..Hoping to learn and grow from taking the PLOW Training!

Hi. I've recently moved to Galveston, Texas, and taken a position in the city's Rosenberg Library computer lab. Plans for renovation and expansion are on the table, but for the time being, we have 40 computers for public access to the internet and to Microsoft Office programs. My main charge is to develop the "children's lab". At present, we have only two computers for the kids loaded with a number of educational games.

I've never worked in this field before, nor anything close, so I've come to WebJunction for support and information. Thanks for being here.

I've been trying to find a source of posters or other items for creating an immediate sense that the children's section is actually a children's section, and I'm not having any luck. If anyone has a source, I'd be grateful to receive a link or contact info. Until we get our space revamped, we are in a large open gallery with the kids' computers set against one wall at a short distance from the adult computers. All I've got at the moment to mark it is the software packaging from the programs we have setting on shelves on the wall. I suppose we could paint some bright colors on the shelves, but if I can find some nice large posters depicting kids and computers (or the kids computer games - perhaps the manufacturers of the games would be a good place to go?), they would move well when we get the new kids' room.

I know that's not exactly an introduction, but looking through the forums, I wasn't sure where this request should go. (If someone wants to direct me to a better spot, I'd be happy to move.)

Happy New Year,
Michele

Greetings:
I am the director of a very small library in the small village of Schoharie ( some of you may remember Schoharie from the David Letterman Show!) in upstate New York.
The library building was built as a private home in 1866, and rehabbed for our use in 1963. We are 99% done with a $600,000 renovation/addition project. I am hoping to cap it off by fulfilling our RLS Action Plan of going Wireless.
My siutaton is kind of unique, in the we are part of the Mohawk Vallety Library System, which has a cooperative contractual agreement with the Southern Adirondack Library System. There is a Joint Automation agreement and staff, which handles all the computer issues, including automated circulation, for every library in both systems. I have it easy, but I'm not complaining!

Hello,
My name is Susanne Caro and I am a new Reference Librarian at the New Mexico State Library. I am interested in increasing the awareness of the Interlibrary Reference Service here at NMSL. Our purpose is to provide reference service to New Mexico Libraries and state residence to ensure access too quality information for all New Mexican citizens, especially those in rural areas. The program also educates librarians throughout the state in methods of using available resources.

We are a federal (federal depository of the year for 2005) and state depository and we have a wonderful southwest collection among other resources including library science and Native American and Hispanic studies.

I am also interested in finding more and better ways to serve NM libraries-so if anyone has suggestions (not just libraries in NM) as to what you would like to see as far a library support I would love to hear your ideas.

My email address is susanne.caro@state.nm.us
If you have a reference question you can email us at: refer@stlib.state.nm.us
Or call the Interlibrary Reference Hotline Number (for use by libraries only) - 1-800-876-2203
Hours: 9 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday, except holidays.
We answer questions immediately when we can or within two business days.

Hi, my name is Isabella. I am a grad student at Wayne State University (Detroit) Library and Information Science Program. One of my classes is Information Technology and we are encouraged to surf the Internet looking for library listservs, discussion boards, and other resources. I just discovered Web Junction. What a cool place! The focus of my studies is international librarianship, rural/small libraries, and outreach services. In a developing country, these are interconnected. I'm hoping to connect with those involved any of these types of programs and engage in some lively discussion.

In addition to being a student, I work full-time in student records at a local high school, work part-time as a page at the local library and am the single mother of two teenagers. I went back to school and finally earned my bachelor's degree at age 40. Now at 41, I'm in grad school. It feels a little daunting, but after dealing with student records for a decade, it's time to move on to greener and more exciting pastures.

My name is Janice and I am the librarian at the Langford Public Library in Langford, South Dakota. We serve the community of Langford and the outlying areas which amount to about 500 people. We are open about 15 hours per week. We are very active in the community offering a reading club, summer and winter reading programs for children, a knitting and crocheting club, an Easter egg hunt and a Halloween party for the children in Langford and the surrounding area. We also host "One Book South Dakota" each year. We have a good bunch of volunteers who raise money and help with the activities and a board of directors who are involved in all aspects of the library. As with other rural libraries, we are always looking for additional funding. The library in our town is the center of a lot of activity and a fun place to go!
