Excellent resource! Thanks for bringing it to our attention! Plus it's by the fabulous Stephanie Gerding, who I worked with so many moons ago at the Gates Foundation! Way to go Stephanie!

Hi, I am new to this sight and have never posted on and message board before. I am glad to see how much information is posted here. I am still a new librarian in a rural area and am looking for as much info on grants as I can find. I think I have found a great place to look. Thanks for all the information.

Hi, welcome, it's great to hear you chiming in here. emoticon

There is indeed a lot of information on WebJunction. What many people don't realize is how much of it is here in the discussions --maybe a bit less organized than in the regular content part of the site, but that's what "Search" is for, right? Have you looked at the Grant Writing - How to Start topic yet?

Since you are from a rural library, I want to point you in the direction of the Rural Library Sustainability Project forums. There is some overlap with this forum, but many issues around funding are particular to small and rural libraries across state boundaries. You will certainly find your colleagues there.

May your library prosper!

Howdy all,

I was reading through Library Hotline and sawthat novelist James Patterson is ponying up 500K "to promote the excitement of books and reading." http://www.pattersonpageturner.org/

Though the deadline is maybe a little too soon for this year (October 16), maybe next year? "Within the 2006 application cycle, there will be two awards of $100,000, two awards of $50,000, and forty $5,000 awards." The lattermost awards go to "nominees who show a notable contribution to the cause of making reading fun and enjoyable."

"Nominators must nominate themselves, or other candidates, online." It's a simple web form, looks like the basic contact info plus three 4,000-character essay blocks.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention! These are some substantial awards.

"The first $100,000–The Page Turner of the Year Award–will be given to any group, individual, company or organization that spreads the joy and excitement of reading in a unique and effective way."

Notice that it isn't necessarily directed at libraries. The competition could be really stiff with booksellers and any person or organization "that has singled out books in an exciting, unusual way." Hmmm, Library Thing should have a good shot at it.

Libraries really need to apply for this just to maintain their reputation. Please let us know if any of you do!
