Getting Library Board Involved in Grants
7:27 PM EDT 9/28/04
The Texas Library and Archive Commission has set basic guidelines for membership in the State Library. Our library was "outed" for the past year. Part of the reason for exclusion was improper reporting. However, this was not the only reason. The best that I can determine is that not a great enough effort was made to secure outside funding. So I am looking for any help I can get on writing grants. This function is supposed to be the responsibility of the Library Board, but I'm afraid if I don't do it, it won't be done.
Suggestions?

Hi Bob, good to see you.

Did you check out the Writing grants - how to start topic in the Library Grants forum? There might be some info in that thread to get you started.

But is your question more about how to get the library board more engaged in the grant writing process? If yes, I think we should change this topic title to something like "Getting Library Board Involved in Grants" and move it to the library grants forum mentioned above.

What say you?

Maybe you should just grab a copy of Big Book of Library Grant Money 2004–2005 from ALA and run with it.

I'm wondering if it's due to not meeting the minimum local funding (from your city, county, etc.) requirements? It's not anything to do with outside funding, but there's a minimum amount of "local effort" that you have to meet according to TSLAC.

We are a 501(c)3 organization. Only 22% of our funding comes from the county and city. A lot of libraries that are funded solely from the local government are being cut back.
We are fortunate in that we have not been defunded. Raising funds has always been a headache. We do have 3 major fund-raisers each year. Being in a small town with dwindling population, we are in danger of asking the same people for money every time we have a fund-raiser. Plus, every other charity organization in town is asking the same people. It's almost a catch 22. Not being a tax recipient, we do well to get the city and county to give anything. Asking for more in next to impossible. So, grants are about the only thing left or endowments.

We just had a meeting Monday with a grant writer from Funding Solutions <http://www.fundingsolutions.org/>. They're based in Paris, Texas, but cover a large area from what I can tell.

They basically do as little or as much as you want on grant writing. They will search for grants, and you have the option of writing all or some of the grant yourself, and you pay by the hour for their work, instead of a percentage.
