Brick & Mortar Grants

Where can I find information on bricks and mortar grants. There seems to be a lot of grants for technology, but what about building a new library for those new computers?

Hi Helena!
Great question. I think the best place to start is with the State Library. I found this information about library building grants in Connecticut:

Just one example. Any others out there?

Yes! Tom (from the state library in CT) told me about a building planning guide they use in their state. I'll see if I can connect him with this topic so he can pass it on to everyone.

A follow up question for this... does anyone know of a good guide on a step-by-step of how to get through the building process? Not the grantwriting part per se, but more of a "what to do when" guide.

I've only been involved in two building projects a few years back -- a bathhouse and swimming pool for a youth agency -- but those were relatively simple in comparison to a full-blown building project.

I just learned that the planners for the new Seattle Public Library had worked out a detailed description of their needs and desires before they ever met with an architect. They came to the table with carefully conceived ideas about how services could best be delivered to the public, the flow of traffic through the space, and improvements to the old library paradigm.

They then chose an architect who was willing to work closely with SPL to create something practical as well as architecturally dramatic.

We (the public) will find out how successful the process was when the new central library opens in May.

I'd appreciate it Chrystie. I've been out of the loop here for a couple of weeks due to the building project, among other things.

We do have a concept drawing and half the land is ours -- just waiting on confirmation for the second half.

But an outline of "what to do next" would really help.

I wish it would be ready to showcase for PLA! For now you can see the temporary quarters for the library in the Convention Center. It has actually won some Architectural Awards for its design.

Max, does that mean you're coming to PLA? be sure to visit the PLA topic in "getting started" so that you can get hooked up with other WJ members while there, and (most importantly!) attend our member reception...
