For the past three years, the Friends group at the Hampton Illinois Library &#040;Dallas Public Library branch&#041; has hosted a Christmas party for the children who use the library. As part of the party, the Friends and local donators buy new books which the children get to select with the help of Santa.<br /><br />This year, we added special guest readers. These readers included a city councilman, a member of the Dallas Parks Board and a local justice of the peace. They read stories in English &amp; Spanish. There were about 100 children &amp; adults for the party and every child got a new book with books left over for next year.<br /><br />There are photos of this party at the Friends of the Dallas Public Library website under Friends Activities.

Will be interesting to see how it impacts the efforts of those who spend time in either of these spheres.

There&#039;s sure to be some great discussion from this new resource posted on WJ! [url /do/DisplayContent?id=18472]Effective Governance for Rural Libraries[/url] by Patricia H. Fisher, Ellen G. Miller, and James Connor outlines the need for a Program for Effective Governance&#040;PEG&#041; that rural boards could use to empower their directors and front&#045;line staff to improve their own libraries and/or their communities. The proposed model includes an &#034;A to Z&#034; set of actions, a phased implementation plan, and the importance of including &#034;a helper or facilitator&#034; in the game plan. The goal is to provide a program which enables the best possible library, in the best possible community.<br /><br />What do YOU think?
