Among its myriad benefits, a Friends of the Library non-profit or a library foundation can help your library obtain substantial discounts on hardware and software.

Tremendous discounts on hardware and software are available for your library from many vendors and organization such as TechSoup Stock. To be eligible for these discounts, however, organizations often need 501(c)3 non-profit status.

A Friends of the Library group or a library foundation can easily fit the bill! There is some paperwork involved to set up an organization like a 501(c)3 non-profit, but several Web sites offer assistance and resources.

  • File a certificate of incorporation with your state's secretary of state or attorney general.

  • Obtain an employer identification number.

  • File for tax-exempt status with the IRS.
