EXP WJ 13/Join a learning cohort

Are you feeling experimental? Join us for a WebJunction adventure into social learning to find out what happens when we wrap a social network around a self-paced, online course. Are we more engaged with the topic? More motivated? Do we learn better?

Take part in the March Learn Together Project. Let’s get together to take this month’s featured (and discounted) course—The Customer’s Voice. We’ve created a group, which will be our virtual classroom. We’ll be able to see our “classmates” in the Group Member’s box, get the lowdown on the Overview page, read the syllabus and guidelines, and discuss the course content as we go. In the end, we’ll all hope to be able to provide better customer service.

So join the group and enroll in the course. We’ll kick off and wrap up the project with live, online meet-ups.

I've seen some great documents being added throughout the site and wanted to highlight them here as excellent examples of how, what and why you should be contributing.

The Customer Focused Library includes a rich collection on attachments, links, and a great summary of research and best practices for being responsive to our library community's needs.

ESL Family Bilingual Library Tour in 2 PPT presentations, one in English and one in Spanish, to orient new library patrons.

Silver Surfing the Sunset Years: electronic literacy classes for seniors describes one library's response to the technology training needs of the seniors in their community.

I like that..."fan" mode. You know how I believe that all levels of engagement are important to building the community, from observer to creator to mentor. I'm working on refining the Topic Moderator roles, and so they'll be ready for you when you settle into a topic area and want to moderate discussions there

We better figure out a prize to honor your completion of the steps in the expwj! You're almost done! How about a yellow hard hat? Oh wait, you have one of those.

I will admint that my participation in discussions on the new webjunction is still in "fan" mode - expressing appreciation for contributions of others. I really want to get into more of a "content" mode and have something more substantive to offer. After I finish my expwj, I think I will look into a specific discussion area/topic in which to get more involved.

More success today. This time after I said OK to the create this bookmark dialog I got a message saying: "Your WJ Bookmark was created" and buttons for managing my bookmarks and closing the window. That was not happening yesterday when the dialog box would be empty except for the red X to close it down.

onward to the next experience.

Check out the User Guide for Bookmarking details. If your not seeing those bookmarks show up at the top of your "My WebJunction" it might be a bug...if so please email support@webjunction with the details.

I will mention that there is another known bug related to bookmarks. When you are viewing another person's bookmarks on their public profile page, the links take you to a message that says you do not have permission to view the page. We're working on that on

That said, your own bookmarking can save loads of time!

I'm playing a bit with bookmarks but seem not to be getting the hang of it or at least my bookmarks aren't showing up on My Webjunction. Maybe I need to log off and log back in or maybe i need to look at a user guide. Will update when I have a chance to play a bit more.

Just after the launch of the new WJ, I added vt.webjunction.org to my homepage tabs (multiple homepages that open on browser launch). However, I realizedthat the first thing I would do when the WJ-VT homepage opened was to click on the My Webjunction tab to check out the updates and respond to friend requests.

It took me a week or so, but I finally figured out that with the Remember Me box checked and the friendly URL for my webjunction, I could simply make that one of my homepages

http://vt.webjunction.org/mywebjunction

Pretty simple way to keep up with the WJ community.

Good idea to mention the tagging document...it lists some great tagging best practices. You should actually see rating as an option on that document, right above the comment box. There are 2 sets of stars. If you hover over the left set (Your Rating) the stars turn yellow. Just click on your rating and it will appear as a part of the average set on the right.

I did not have any trouble finding a document to comment on and did so on the tagging document. It is a good way to remind myself to actually do the tagging.

I was not able to find a document that I could rate. While trying to figure that out, I learned that when you submit a document, you have to enable rating, so maybe I just have not found a document for which it is enabled. It's also possible, that I have completely overlooked the rating function on the documents that I am viewing,

You're not making it up, there was an allusion to it in the beta, but as you know, the prioritization list for development moves stuff down sometimes. Direct member to member communication is indeed something we hope to provide at some point, but I think for now, the 2 ways to best connect with friends in this way are, are as you said, by watching your Updates portlet for posts your friends make to their comment board. But if you want to be sure to efficiently reach them, it might just be best to find their email on their member info, as long as they choose to share…if not, maybe a note on their comments telling them you want to connect and direct them to *your* member info/email.

I’m going to encourage you to keep your eye on the Site Feature Requests group for additional deets on this sort of development update, and for a place to keep your suggestions brewing.

I am still trying to sort out how the make best use of comments on profiles. If you are going to respond to someone's comment on my profile, but realized that the person to whom I am responding is unlikely to see my comment because the only way that they know it is there is by seeing a a listing in their update on their My Webjunction page that would read something like "Sheila Kearns commented on Sheila Kearns's page"

Maybe I am trying to turn the comments feature into some sort of conversation tool for which it is not designed, but I am still looking for a good tool for direct member to member communication (Facebook messages come to mind). Once I thought I saw a link in some members information that said "Send a message to..." but now can't find it when I look. Maybe I am making the up.
