Links and descriptions of federal agencies that partners in the work of materials science by maintaining and enforcing standards, funding research and development, and providing access to a large body of information.
- National Institute of Standards and Technology - "The National Institute of Standards and Technology conducts and supports scientific and engineering research in disciplines ranging from chemistry and physics to information technology. NIST provides access to material pertinent to their mission from this website. There are links to NIST scientific and engineering data, standards, databases, laboratories, software, and other NIST information and services."
- Science Accelerator - "Science Accelerator is a portal searching searches vast scientific and technical resources, including R&D results, project descriptions, accomplishments, and more, via resources made available by OSTI. This database was developed by the Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) within the Department of Energy (DOE) and is available as a free public service."
- Energy Citations Database - The Energy Citations Database (ECD) "provides free access to over 2.3 million science research citations from 1948 through the present, with continued growth through regular updates. There are over 150,000 electronic documents, primarily from 1994 forward, available via the database. ECD includes scientific and technical research results in disciplines of interest to DOE such as chemistry, physics, materials, environmental science, geology, engineering, mathematics, climatology, oceanography, computer science and related disciplines. It includes bibliographic citations to report literature, conference papers, journal articles, books, dissertations, and patents."
- DOE Information Bridge - "The DOE Information Bridge provides free public access to full-text documents and bibliographic citations of Department of Energy (DOE) research report literature. Documents are primarily from 1994 forward and were produced by DOE, the DOE contractor community, and/or DOE grantees. Legacy documents are added as they become available in electronic format. The subject areas included are physics, chemistry, materials, biology, environmental sciences, energy technologies, engineering, computer and information science, renewable energy, and other topics of interest related to DOE's mission."
- DOE Data Explorer (DDE) - DDE contains scientific research data, such as computer simulations, numeric data files, figures and plots, interactive maps, multimedia, and scientific images - generated in the course of DOE-sponsored research in various science disciplines.
- National Technical Information Service (NTIS) - NTIS is an agency responsible for collecting for government-funded scientific, technical, engineering, and business related since the 1950s. The NTIS database provides citation information for over 3 million publications from 1964 to the present.
- Science.gov - Search engine providing single search access to over 50 million pages of government science and reseach results. Many results are available in full text. Site is maintained by the Science.gov Alliance, a group of STI government agencies.
- Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) - Provides centralized access to all of Department of Defense's scientific and technical information on DoD's multidisciplinary research, development, engineering, and studies programs. Some reports available in full text.
- TRIS (Transportation Research Information Service) Online - "TRIS Online is a public-domain, web-based version of the Transportation Research Information Services (TRIS) bibliographic database. The TRIS Online database contains over half a million records of published transportation research including technical reports, books, conference proceedings and journal articles, including over 20,000 available in full text. The time span covers literature from the 1960s to the present, with some coverage of prior years. Highway Research Board publications are covered back to 1923. TRIS coverage includes the disciplines of planning, finance, design and construction, materials, environmental issues, safety and human factors and operations for the modes of highways, transit, railroads, maritime and aviation. TRIS does not contain information on vehicle standards and specifications, patent information, market research, military transport or news articles."
