Links and descriptions of many of the federal agencies that are involved in and produce information relating to environmental science.
- NSCEP/NEPIS - EPA's Gateway to Free Digital and Paper Publications - Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) database providing access to tangible and electronic EPA reports from the 1970s. There are over 25,000 full text electronic reports and this collection continues to grow. The National Environmental Publications Internet Site (NEPIS) was incorporated into NSCEP in January 2007. NSCEP provides search and browse options.
- EnviroFacts Data Warehouse - "A single point of access to select U.S. EPA environmental data. This website provides access to several EPA databases to provide you with information about environmental activities that may affect air, water, and land anywhere in the United States."
- EPA Alphabetical Listing of Projects and Programs - Provides alternate way to access Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) information by links to EPA projects and programs.
- Integrated Risk Information System : IRIS - "IRIS is a compilation of electronic reports on specific substances found in the environment and their potential to cause human health effects. IRIS was initially developed for EPA staff in response to a growing demand for consistent information on substances for use in risk assessments, decision-making and regulatory activities. The information in IRIS is intended for those without extensive training in toxicology, but with some knowledge of health sciences."
- HazDat Database - A "scientific and administrative database developed to provide access to information on the release of hazardous substances from Superfund sites or from emergency events and on the effects of hazardous substances on the health of human populations."
- WINDandSEA: The Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences Internet Guide - This guide was built by NOAA librarians to help those concerned with oceanic and atmospheric issues. The over 1,000 selected links to science and policy sites organized by topic and alphabetically within topic. Many of these links are outside the NOAA website.
- ToxSeek – "A meta-search engine that enables simultaneous searching of many different information resources on the World Wide Web. The ToxSeek user interface allows selection of resources from a wide range of authoritative resources."
- Science Accelerator - "Science Accelerator is a portal searching searches vast scientific and technical resources, including R&D results, project descriptions, accomplishments, and more, via resources made available by OSTI. This database was developed by the Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) within the Department of Energy (DOE) and is available as a free public service."
- Energy Citations Database - The Energy Citations Database (ECD) "provides free access to over 2.3 million science research citations from 1948 through the present, with continued growth through regular updates. There are over 150,000 electronic documents, primarily from 1994 forward, available via the database. ECD includes scientific and technical research results in disciplines of interest to DOE such as chemistry, physics, materials, environmental science, geology, engineering, mathematics, climatology, oceanography, computer science and related disciplines. It includes bibliographic citations to report literature, conference papers, journal articles, books, dissertations, and patents."
- DOE Information Bridge - "The DOE Information Bridge provides free public access to full-text documents and bibliographic citations of Department of Energy (DOE) research report literature. Documents are primarily from 1994 forward and were produced by DOE, the DOE contractor community, and/or DOE grantees. Legacy documents are added as they become available in electronic format. The subject areas included are physics, chemistry, materials, biology, environmental sciences, energy technologies, engineering, computer and information science, renewable energy, and other topics of interest related to DOE's mission."
- DOE Data Explorer (DDE) - DDE contains scientific research data, such as computer simulations, numeric data files, figures and plots, interactive maps, multimedia, and scientific images - generated in the course of DOE-sponsored research in various science disciplines.
- National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) - Research - "The National Center for Atmospheric Research's (NCAR) activities as an integrator, innovator, and community builder are contributing to the development of a predictive Earth system science that can help sustain Earth’s habitability, improve environmental quality, safeguard human health, reduce the impacts of natural disasters, and increase economic productivity." NCAR's research website links to areas of research - climate, meteorology/weather, societal impacts, pollution & air chemistry, whole earth system, sun & space weather.
- U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) - Electronic Reading Room - "The mission of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is to enable the nation to safely use radioactive materials for beneficial civilian purposes while ensuring that people and the environment are protected. The NRC regulates commercial nuclear power plants and other uses of nuclear materials, such as in nuclear medicine, through licensing, inspection and enforcement of its requirements.. The Electronic Reading Room website contains information and the documents that are most pertinent to NRC regulatory activities. Many of the documents are in Basic References or Document Collections sections of the website. The rest are available either from our record retrieval system, ADAMS, or from our Public Document Room found on the website as well."
- National Technical Information Service (NTIS) - NTIS is an agency responsible for collecting for government-funded scientific, technical, engineering, and business related since the 1950s. The NTIS database provides citation information for over 3 million publications from 1964 to the present.
- Science.gov - Search engine providing single search access to over 50 million pages of government science and reseach results. Many results are available in full text. Site is maintained by the Science.gov Alliance, a group of STI government agencies.
- USGS Publications Warehouse - Primary UGSG database providing access to thousands of citations, full text reports, and thematic map USGS materials. Can also order some publications from the website. Coverage is from the late 1800s forward.
- USGS Science Topics - Provides alternate way to search for USGS science programs and activities through a topical directory. Some reports available in full text.
- Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) - Provides centralized access to all of Department of Defense's scientific and technical information on DoD's multidisciplinary research, development, engineering, and studies programs. Some reports available in full text.
- TRIS (Transportation Research Information Service) Online - "TRIS Online is a public-domain, web-based version of the Transportation Research Information Services (TRIS) bibliographic database. The TRIS Online database contains over half a million records of published transportation research including technical reports, books, conference proceedings and journal articles, including over 20,000 available in full text. The time span covers literature from the 1960s to the present, with some coverage of prior years. Highway Research Board publications are covered back to 1923. TRIS coverage includes the disciplines of planning, finance, design and construction, materials, environmental issues, safety and human factors and operations for the modes of highways, transit, railroads, maritime and aviation. TRIS does not contain information on vehicle standards and specifications, patent information, market research, military transport or news articles."
