Links and descriptions of federal government agencies that create, produce and publish information relating to biology.
As the science of life, biology examines the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, and distribution of living things. Such a large topic is commonly divided into specialized disciplines including botany, zoology, microbiology, molecular biology, cellular biology, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and ecology. Therefore, many federal government agencies create, produce and publish information relating to biology.

Key Resources
- National Center for Biotechnology Informaition (NCBI) Entrez, The Life Sciences Search Engine - Provides access to a cross-database search page for many biological and medical databases. One can search across all databases or select a specific database or website to search.
- PubMed - "PubMed provides access to citations from biomedical literature including MEDLINE, as well as:
- The out-of-scope citations (e.g., articles on plate tectonics or astrophysics) from certain MEDLINE journals, primarily general science and chemistry journals, for which the life sciences articles are indexed for MEDLINE.
- Citations that precede the date that a journal was selected for MEDLINE indexing.
- Some additional life science journals that submit full text to PubMedCentral and receive a qualitative review by NLM."
- Some reports and articles available in full text.
- ToxSeek – "A meta-search engine that enables simultaneous searching of many different information resources on the World Wide Web. The ToxSeek user interface allows selection of resources from a wide range of authoritative resources."
- CRISP (Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects) - "A searchable database of federally funded biomedical research projects conducted at universities, hospitals, and other research institutions... Users, including the public, can use the CRISP interface to search for scientific concepts, emerging trends and techniques, or identify specific projects and/or investigators."
- Human Genome Resources - "NCBI's Web site serves an an integrated, one-stop, genomic information infrastructure for biomedical researchers from around the world so that they may use these data in their research efforts."
- USGS Publications Warehouse - Primary UGSG database providing access to thousands of citations, full text reports, and thematic map USGS materials. Can also order some publications from the website. Coverage is from the late 1800s forward.
- USGS Science Topics - Provides alternate way to search for USGS science programs and activities through a topical directory. Some reports available in full text.
- WINDandSEA: The Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences Internet Guide - This guide was built by NOAA librarians to help those concerned with oceanic and atmospheric issues. The over 1,000 selected links to science and policy sites organized by topic and alphabetically within topic. Many of these links are outside the NOAA website.
- National Invasive Species Information Center (NISIC) - The U.S. Department of Agriculture provides access to information related to "invasive species as well as general biodiversity."
- National Institute of Standards and Technology - "The National Institute of Standards and Technology conducts and supports scientific and engineering research in disciplines ranging from chemistry and physics to information technology. NIST provides access to material pertinent to their mission from this website." There are links to NIST scientific and engineering data, standards, databases, laboratories, software, and other NIST information and services.
- Science Accelerator - "Science Accelerator is a portal searching searches vast scientific and technical resources, including R&D results, project descriptions, accomplishments, and more, via resources made available by OSTI." This database was developed by the Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) within the Department of Energy (DOE) and is available as a free public service.
- DOE Information Bridge - "The DOE Information Bridge provides free public access to full-text documents and bibliographic citations of Department of Energy (DOE) research report literature. Documents are primarily from 1994 forward and were produced by DOE, the DOE contractor community, and/or DOE grantees. Legacy documents are added as they become available in electronic format. The subject areas included are physics, chemistry, materials, biology, environmental sciences, energy technologies, engineering, computer and information science, renewable energy, and other topics of interest related to DOE's mission."
- DOE Data Explorer (DDE) - DDE contains scientific research data, such as computer simulations, numeric data files, figures and plots, interactive maps, multimedia, and scientific images - generated in the course of DOE-sponsored research in various science disciplines.
- National Technical Information Service (NTIS) - NTIS is an agency responsible for collecting for government-funded scientific, technical, engineering, and business related since the 1950s. The NTIS database provides citation information for over 3 million publications from 1964 to the present.
- Science.gov - Search engine providing single search access to over 50 million pages of government science and reseach results. Many results are available in full text. Site is maintained by the Science.gov Alliance, a group of STI government agencies.
- Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) - Provides centralized access to all of Department of Defense's scientific and technical information on DoD's multidisciplinary research, development, engineering, and studies programs. Some reports available in full text.
