It's budget time again! Last year the city council cut our budget by over 35%. We need to do something impressive to get the city fathers to restore some of our funding, but what? It is also time to do e-rate forms, board meeting preparations, Friends of the Library updates, an article for the paper, etc., etc. There isn't time to learn something new and make it look impressive enough for our needs. Help! Hey look at this. Our regional library administrator has designed a Power Point presentation template for us to use. I've taken just enough training on Power Point so that I know what it can do. I try the template and it is truly wonderful. All you have to do is insert your local facts and figures and the presentation comes out looking like a million bucks. That was so easy that let's go a step farther and add some additional information and comments. I go to our annual report and to Web Collect to find material that will help make our library more real to the city council and explain to them what it is we need their funds to help us accomplish and what we have been doing the past few years. Last year we used some donated funds to purchase a laptop computer and a multi-media projector to help update our meeting room and make it “an up-to-date place” to present any kind of programming. Our Power Point presentation was burned to a CD to be used in the laptop. The script that came with our template was revised to reflect our individual presentation. We loaded up the projector and computer and took off for City Hall. The room was full when we started our program, which was projected to a bare wall of the council chambers. The presentation went off without a hitch. There were several questions before we concluded. Then one of the council members said, “If that really was your first Power Point presentation it was excellent”. I felt we had gotten our point across to the Council and done it in style. It was a great success and I hadn't had to spend an enormous amount of time or tension to fulfill my commitment. We have since used this same presentation for the Library Board as well as for the Friends of the Library. Power Point is a fantastic way to show the public “less than exciting” facts and figures that will truly tell the library's story. We have even set up the lap top on our circulation desk as a little kiosk with a continuous Power Point presentation running to show our public what our library is doing and wants to do in our little town of 1700 people. Having the Power Point given to us as a template for budget presentations was a wonderful find. I am so grateful for that tool and highly recommend it to any other library.
