New Directions for Library Volunteers

Volunteers in the library are more than just unpaid helpers who fill in gaps and extend the ability to deliver services. They are the living connectors that help build the commitment of the community to the library through their dedicated efforts. However, as every volunteer manager knows, getting the most of your library volunteers is a complex and energetic endeavor. While many best practices never go out of date, there are some new angles to recruiting and utilizing volunteers. WebJunction offers two webinars this month on attracting skilled volunteers, as well as a compilation of current resources for recruiting, managing and training volunteers.

Best Annual Gathering: ARSL Conference

The 2011 annual Association of Rural and Small Libraries conference in Frisco, Texas, drew over 300 attendees, many of whom would probably agree with our Jennifer Peterson that it is the “best library conference around.” Project Compass delivered a workforce recovery workshop ahead of the conference, bringing nearly 50 representatives from rural libraries together to discuss the particular challenges of helping the unemployed in small and isolated communities and to explore the possibilities for increasing library services to them.

	A "wave" of enthusiasm ripples through the Project Compass workshop held at ARSL, where participants from rural libraries in 14 high-unemployment states focused on how to increase services to their struggling communities.

		2011 Public Library Funding & Technology Access Study: Results, Trends, and Resources November 1, 2011 Over 8,400 urban, suburban, and rural libraries participated in the 2011 Public Library Funding & Technology Access Study, the largest and longest-running study of Internet connectivity in U.S. public libraries. Key findings affirmed that use of public computers has increased yet libraries report insufficient equipment to meet the demands. Learn how to interpret the data and emerging trends; access new advocacy and marketing tools, issue briefs, and PR templates; and use the data to make the case for your library with elected officials and community stakeholders. Technology Planning Meets the 21st Century

In this decade alone, the new technology we have seen—from new components, to new applications, to speedier modes of transmission—has transformed how we seek and find information. In response, libraries are transforming their services to ensure that their communities have access to these now essential tools. Libraries must make pragmatic and yet forward-looking decisions about what technology to invest in, and have a good understanding of the resources that will be needed to purchase and maintain—and eventually replace—the constantly evolving hardware and software. This can be a daunting undertaking, so this month take some time to get acquainted with the WebJunction resources that help guide you through the planning process.

Getting Started Series: Free Self-paced Instruction

When member Michael Starks stepped forward to share his expertise, the whole WebJunction community benefited.

Michael offers clear explanations of popular software and web applications, addressing the fundamentals without over-simplifying. He has posted a series of six downloadable self-guided tutorials in PowerPoint format:

Microsoft Office 2010 covers the basics of Excel, PowerPoint and Word in the latest release of the standard Microsoft office tools.

How to Learn and How to Train

When staff skills are kept up to date, we are helping to ensure our library's continued vitality and our coworkers' sense of continuous growth as library professionals. This month we are discussing not just the good reasons to invest in staff training, but also the challenges that can get in the way of learning goals—from our feeling too stressed or over-committed to learn, to opportunities that don't get on our radar, to lack of administrative buy-in. Our two-day online conference is a great place to start your commitment to continuous learning. And we're keeping it stress-free: join for as few or as many sessions as you can, or watch the recorded presentations on your own time.

This spring we sent a survey to a sample of WebJunction members to learn how WebJunction resources are used, determine the current training needs of library staff that WebJunction should focus on, and guide the improvements we will make to WebJunction in the coming year. The report of those results has now been published, and we encourage you to download and read what you and your colleagues have told us.

	Help Design the New WebJunction.org In response to member survey feedback about the website and to better reflect WebJunction's evolved mission and services, we will be redesigning and relaunching WebJunction.org in the coming year. We are looking for library staff who would be willing to participate in some usability tests of the site design this month. If you are available for about 30 minutes during the week of August 8-12 or a 2-hour session during August 24-26, please contact Sharon Streams at streamss@oclc.org. No previous experience with WebJunction.org or website design is required, and testing can all be done online from the comfort of your own desk. Thank you!

Practical Tips from Libraries at the Core of Workforce Recovery

We’re pulling tips from a growing reservoir of practical ideas resulting from Project Compass’ reach through its workshops and programs. Here's where they are gathered on WebJunction:

60 (plus) Ways Libraries Can Help Job Seekers: these ideas were all generated by Project Compass trainers working in a handful of the most economically hard-hit states.
56 Things you (your library) can do for workforce renewal: many of the ideas in the “60-plus” document, but presented in PowerPoint slides and organized by themes.
Online Workshop #1 Resource Summary: through their lively exchanges in the forums, participants in the first Project Compass online workshop contributed a host of ideas and resources to address basic computer skills training and to meet the needs of job seekers.

Discussions Forums Just Got Easier

Visitors have had a hard time finding the discussions on WebJunction and, more importantly, keeping up with the activity there. So, we have consolidated most of the discussion forums to three areas:

We also did some weeding of the forums, which had posts dating back to 2004. We moved only those threads with recent activity to their new location and archived the older threads.

There are some additional places you will find discussion forums on WebJunction:

Workforce Resources – these threads related to serving job seekers and the unemployment have been kept as a stand-alone topic for the time being, while our Project Compass work is still in full swing
Group pages – the discussions hosted by member groups are still on those pages
Getting Started – forum for support using WebJunction
State Library Partner discussions – forums that are hosted on the state-specific versions of WebJunction have not been moved.

How and Where Does Social Media Fit?
Let's face it: social media—from Facebook and Twitter, to text messaging, to photo- and video-sharing, to online chat —are everywhere now, assimilated into the daily lives of people of all ages across the globe. Many libraries have learned how to use these tools to strength their connection with their community, and to connect new patrons to library resources and programs (summer reading, anyone?). Other libraries are working with policy issues that prevent patrons and staff from using social tools in the library. We're discussing these issues and more this month; here's how you can get involved:

Free Online Workshop: Libraries at the Core of Workforce Recovery
This month Project Compass kicks off a second free 4-week online workshop, Libraries Supporting Small Business and Financial Health. This workshop explores how libraries can help move their communities from surviving to thriving by supporting local economic development and helping patrons increase their personal financial skills. You will look beyond the immediate needs of job seekers, discover other approaches to support the workforce in your community and expand their capacity to succeed in the 21st century. The program begins on July 12 with a live webinar, and will be followed by four weeks of self-paced reading assignments, discussions and peer networking. WebJunction Offers Unlimited Free Courses to Sponsored Members

How Is Your Library Supporting E-Books?
Many libraries are now at least dabbling in stocking e-books, and some are making them the primary focus for new acquisitions. There are many debates going on about whether e-books are truly replacing print and if it is a good time for libraries to invest in the current mobile devices on the market such as Kindles, iPads, and Nooks. The results of our 2011 survey of WebJunction members show that 29% of respondents from small public libraries have purchased a mobile device in the past year. Is this trend increasing? Tell us what your plans are for this next year by answering this quick poll.

Windows 7 Training Curriculum for Computer-Shy Adults
Microsoft has developed hands-on instructor-led curriculum for libraries to teach "getting started" PC topics to adults. These 10 new one-hour workshops (and a corresponding series of 8 three-hour workshops) are based on extensive research about how adults who are not tech-savvy learn new computer skills. The hands-on workshops use a jargon-free approach to teaching a variety of topics, including Getting Started with Windows 7. Spotlight on WebJunction-Ohio
The State Library of Ohio has partnered with WebJunction to provide access to self-paced courses and content focused on the practice of librarianship in Ohio. WebJunction-Ohio offers library staff access to state specific content related to IMLS LSTA Grants, Choose to Read Ohio, the 2010 Ohio Summer Reading program, and more, through the Ohio Center on the WJ-OH site.

Spotlight on WebJunction-Missouri
WebJunction-Missouri is an online community where library staff, trustees and volunteers can learn, share ideas, and work together to improve library services. Members can take part in online classes and webinars, get the latest news, and explore all aspects of library service. Let's Talk Cataloging
You might consider cataloging a mysterious feat performed by unseen hands, something you try to avoid except when absolutely necessary, or an activity that you revel in each day. Whatever your perspective may be, you know that the classification and organization of library materials is core to a well-functioning library; and new technology and approaches are changing how a catalog can be created, maintained, and accessed by patrons. Cataloging is also a subject that our member community has been clamoring for; so WebJunction will be spotlighting it this month, and we hope you'll join in.

Registration is Open for August Conference
Plan now to attend Trends in Library Training and Learning: Developing Staff Skills in the 21st Century, a free two-day online conference to be held on August 10–11. Produced in collaboration with the ALA Learning Round Table, this WebJunction event is free and open to all. Free Online Workshop: Libraries at the Core of Workforce Recovery
In July, Project Compass will be offering a second free 4-week online workshop, Libraries Supporting Small Business and Financial Health. This workshop explores the potential for libraries to help move their communities from surviving to thriving by supporting local economic development and helping patrons increase their personal financial skills. You will look beyond the immediate needs of job seekers, discover other approaches to support the workforce in your community and expand their capacity to succeed in the 21st century. The program will kick off with a live webinar on July 12, and will be followed by four weeks of self-paced reading assignments, discussions and peer networking. There is no prerequisite for attending this July workshop. For more details, visit the workshop program page.

Project Compass Goes to ALA
If you're headed to New Orleans, we hope you'll stop by one of the events Jennifer Peterson will be attending to talk about Project Compass's efforts to help libraries guide workforce and economic recovery efforts. Sessions on Saturday and Sunday include an OCLC panel discussing virtual reference for job seekers, and two poster sessions highlighting the training initiative: one at the Learning Round Table Training Showcase, and another with Project Compass trainers Bill Erbes (IL) and Lindsey Wesson (TN).
