Got Answers?

With so many excellent questions coming into the Discussion Boards and with our members' huge collective knowledge base, we decided to launch a new Community page feature: Question of the Week. See if you can help provide an answer to your colleagues in this week's question or to those posted previously in the Question of the Week forum. Or perhaps you have a burning question of your own— find the appropriate discussion forum and ask away!

What's New

Start You Up! The Personal Learning Experience for Library Staff and other Busy Professionals

The new term "Personal Learning Experience" refers to a concept of highly individualized, non-structured e-learning built by the user to meet his or her own needs. Also known as a "PLE," it can be a mix of educational computer software or applications, Internet pages, Web 2.0 tools and creativity. During this December 5 webinar, we'll look at the most popular start pages like iGoogle, Netvibes and Pageflakes, and show you how to create your own private, educational website about almost any topic you choose! Presented by Marianne Lenox, HMCPL Staff Training and Development Coordinator.

Rural In Focus Webinar: Everyday Library Advocacy

Join us on November 29 to learn how you can turn your customer service policy, internal and external communication plans, and networking agenda into advocacy tools that work for you every day of the year. Featured speakers from the state of Wyoming—Lesley Boughton, Tina Lackey, Troy Rumpf, and Jamie Markus—will share what they've been doing in this arena, and jumpstart our discussion for the day.

Discounted Online Degree Programs Through WebJunction & Drexel University

Through a partnership with Drexel, WebJunction members receive 20% off tuition rates when enrolling in either the MS in Information Systems or the ALA-accredited MS in Library & Information Science program offered through Drexel's College of Information Science and Technology (iSchool). Drexel is now accepting applications for the winter term through December 1.

Containing a range of useful materials, the Civics and Citizenship Toolkit is the perfect resource to help your library begin or enhance a collection for immigrants. To obtain your free copy, visit www.citizenshiptoolkit.gov. Meet and ask questions of the project coordinator during the January 8 SLO In Depth Webinar, and read more about the resource when you visit WebJunction.

There are many things to consider when designing and building Web sites, including layout, navigation and usability just to name a few. This course on Web Design & Graphics will teach you strategies for planning the structure of a Web site, creating color schemes and making your site download quickly. For November this course is discounted at $10—less than half price. If you're in a WebJunction community partner state, the course is free, thanks to your state's subscription.

Drawing from her experiences at Washoe County Library System, Internet Services Librarian Jami Haskell provides information on how to implement social software technologies responsibly, fairly and without legal liability. Her article includes the WCLS policy that was approved in May, as well as links to several other examples.
