The Social Library, Volume 14

Jennifer Peterson /

Volume 14 of our Social Library series doesn't feature any of the many libraries who are doing a fantastic job of promoting their summer reading programs, but we found some other interesting programming to complement your springtime activities. We were particularly drawn to those that connect with adult patrons, as we get ready for this week's #WJwebinar, Beyond Book Groups: Fun Library Programs for Adult Readers. Until then, here are a few examples of the fantastic things happening at libraries we follow on Facebook.

  • The Burlington County Library System in New Jersey invites patrons to play their book trivia game, #‎BCLSFridayBookTrivia‬. This simple format appears most Fridays, featuring a book, a question, and multiple-choice answers. What an easy way to engage with the community and to encourage reading!
  • The Naturita Community Library in Colorado invites community members to bring poetry, stories, and music to perform at this week's Open Mic. Providing an all-ages venue for community creativity could be the start of something or someone big. Sixteen year old Sawyer Fredericks, the recent winner of the Voice, got his start at open mics! For more inspiration, check out all the photos in Flickr of library open mics. University Libraries in Ohio hosted an Open Mic Lunch.
  • The Hialeah Public Libraries in Florida uses Facebook to feature their Employee of the Month. The post for April Employee of the Month highlights all the great work of Liliana Garcia, in both English and Spanish, and features a lovely photo. What a simple yet wonderful way to recognize members of your team, and to provide staff and community members to add their praise.
  • The Tooele City Library in Utah is hosting a Star Party next month, in collaboration with the Salt Lake Astronomical Society. Recognizing the appeal of a cool(er) summer night, what a great way to bring people to the library for an outdoor event.Image courtesy Toodle City Library on Facebook And love the reminder on the flyer that people need to park on the street, since the program will be hosted in the library's parking lot.
  • The Louisville Public Library in Ohio is hosting, not one, but two Kickball events this coming month. First up, the Wacky Wednesday Kickball Game, and then later in the month, Daddy and Me Kick Ball, is sure to please the Dads on their special weekend. We love seeing libraries hosting outdoor and physical events, to keep those bodies moving and healthy!

We look forward to seeking out next week's treasures from those we follow on Facebook. If you have innovative and impactful programs going on at your library that you'd like to showcase, let us know at [email protected], or find us on Facebook.

Thanks to all of this week's featured libraries for such outstanding service to your communities!
