WHATEVER THAT QUESTION MAY BE, AND ESPECIALLY AS IMMIGRATION POLICIES ARE ALWAYS CHANGING, WE WANTED TO BE ABLE TO SAY YES; IF THEY WERE ABLE TO COME IN, IMMIGRANTS WERE AIL TO COME IN AND FEEL WELCOME IN THE LIBRARY AND FOR DENVER, WE WERE A CITY AGENCY BUT IT HAVE A GOVERNMENT AGENCY SO WE HAD THAT INFLUENCE OF TRUST THAT WE COULD LEVERAGE TO ACCESS VARIOUS CITY RESOURCES. A LOT OF IT WAS PAYING ATTENTION TO NATIONAL POLICY. I THINK LIBRARIANS AND LIBRARY STAFF PERSONNEL REALLY DO CARE ABOUT SERVING INTERESTS OF ALL. BUT AGAIN, WITHIN YOUR OWN DISTRICT OR YOUR SYSTEM, IT'S HARD THE PRIORITIZE AND KIND OF FIND A WAY TO PIT YOURSELF INTO A CRITICAL NEED. I THINK NOW IS A VERY CRITICAL TIME FOR LIBRARIES OF LIBRARIES ARE CONSTANTLY TRYING TO REENVISION THEMSELVES, FIND A NEW PLACE IN SOCIETY AND AND I THINK THERE'S A LOT OF MICROSPACES AND LOT HAPPENING THAT IT'S HARD THE COMPETE, BUT I THINK WITH IMMIGRANT REFUGEE SERVICES IF YOU'RE PITCHING THIS TO YOUR ADMINISTRATION, IT'S REALLY JUST LIKE A MATTER OF CHANGING DEMOGRAPHICS AND REALLY THESE ARE THE MOST VULNERABLE POPULATIONS THAT NEED ACCESS TO INFORMATION, NEED FREE RESOURCES, NEED ACCURATE INFORMATION, SO FOR YOU TO BE THAT TRUSTED RESOURCE IS LIKE THE PILLAR OF LIBRARIANSHIP. SO YOU CAN APPEAL TO THE HEARTS AND THEN HOPEFULLY GOAT SOME DATA WHICH REALLY TALK ABOUT TO APPEAL TO THE MIND AS WELL. SO ON THE LOCAL LEVEL AGAIN, THE COUNT OF DENVER WHEN I WAS WITH THE LIBRARY WERE SO CRITICAL AND HELPFUL INNING A GRATING DATA FOR US TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS IN OUR COMMUNITY. WHAT LANGUAGES THEY WERE SPEAKING, HOW WE MIGHT GO ABOUT DOING MORE OUTREACH. SO MY OFFICE PUT TOT A DEMOGRAPHIC REPORT. THIS WAS THE ONE THAT BECAME THE MOST USE OF. SO I GRADUAT GATHERED DATA FROM OUR LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT. BECAUSE AT REGISTRATION THEY ASKED WHAT LANGUAGE IS SPOKEN IN THE HOME. AND SO THROUGH THAT DATA I HAVE ABLE TO MAP WHAT THE CONCENTRATION OF LANGUAGES WERE THROUGHOUT THE CITY OF DENVER. AND THROUGH THAT OVER140 FAVORABLES AND DIALECTS WERE IDENTIFIED AS SPOKEN IN THE HOME BY DPS FAMILIES. WE MAPPED THE TOP 12 OF THOSE LANGUAGES. SO WE CAN REALLY QUICKLY KIND OF LOOK AT AN ASSESSMENT OF THIS. I WOULD KNOW RIGHT OFF THE BAT LOOKING AT THESE MAPS THAT THERE ARE TOP FOUR LANGUAGES SPOKEN BY FAMILIES IN THIS AREA. WHAT WE FURTHER DID WAS A NEIGHBORHOOD ASSESSMENT OF THE TOP IMMIGRANT NEIGHBORHOODS AND REALLY LOOKED AT THE ASSETS. I THINK WHAT WE DO TOO OFTEN IS LOOK AT IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES IN TERMS OF DEFICITS AND NEED SO I STARTED LOOKING AT WHAT ARE THE ASSETS OUT THERE, ESPECIALLY ME AS A GOVERNMENT AGENT OR SOMEBODY FROM COMMUNITY PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT, NEEDED TO GO OUTS INTO MONTBELLO TO DO OUT REACH, WHERE DO THEY GO FOR INTERACTION AND ENGAGEMENT WITH IMMIGRANT REFUGEE NEIGHBORS AND RESIDENTS. SO WE MAPPED ALL INSTITUTIONS OF FAITH AND NONPROFITS AND GOVERNMENT AGENTS LIKELY LIKE LIBRARIES AND OTHER GOVERNMENT FACILITIES THAT WE KNEW COULD BE UTILIZED TO HELP CREATE A BIGGER PICTURE OF THAT NEIGHBORHOOD AND HOW YOU COULD ACCESS COMMUNITY. SO THIS BECAME A REALLY VALUABLE NOT JUST AN OUTREACH TOOL BUT REALLY A PICTURE OF OUR COMMUNITIES AND IT ALSO BECAME A POLITICAL OPPORTUNITY TO TALK TO ALL OF OUR CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS AND DEMONSTRATE FOR THEM THE DIVERSITY IN THEIR DISTRICTS. THAT IMMIGRANTS LIVE IN EVERY SINGLE NEIGHBORHOOD IN DENVER, SOME AS LOW AS SEVEN OR TEN PERCENT, SOME AS HIGH AS 30 OR 40 TO 50 PERCENT IN THOUGH NAMEDS. SO THAT BECAME A REALLY VALUE PIECE FOR US TO THEY COULD GET A BETTER IDEA OF WHO THEIR CONSTITUENTS ARE. JUST OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD, SPANISH, ARABIC. CHINESE, OTHERS. I KNOW THE CITY LIBRARIAN CAME OUT IN FEBRUARY PERHAPS WITH A LARGE PUBLIC STATEMENT ABOUT WHERE THE LIBRARY SITS IN TERMS OF THIS POLITICAL LANDSCAPE. AND THAT THEY ARE ABOUT MEETING COMMUNITY NEED FOR INFORMATION. SO ANYONE AND EVERYONE IS WELCOME AND MAKING THAT AVAILABLE TO MULTIPLE LANGUAGES AND REALLY REINFORCING IT WITH STAFF THAT IMMIGRATION QUESTIONS AREN'T ANSWERED THERE. AND REALLY BEING VERY THOUGHTFUL ABOUT WHEN AND IF LAW ENFORCEMENT HAVE PRESENCE IN LIBRARY BRANCHES. JUST BECAUSE THAT FEAR IS SO RELEVANT AND SO VISUAL WHEN IT COMES TO LAW ENFORCEMENT. AND WE OF COURSE HAVE LOW-INCOME WORKERS, SOME OF WHOM ARE UNDOCUMENTED. SO I HAVE BEEN WITH THE LIBRARY FOR THE PAST 15 YEARS AND IN THAT PERIOD THE GROWTH JUST CONTINUES TO KEEP GROWING AS IT WERE. SO ONE NUMBER WHICH SOMETIMES SURPRISES PEOPLE WHEN THEY THINK OF A CITY LIKE LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY IS THE FACT WITHIN OUR SCHOOL SYSTEM WE HAVE 136 LANGUAGES SPOKEN IN THE HOMES OF STUDENTS WHO ARE LEARNING ENGLISH, AND THAT'S 136. JENNIFER WAS GRACIOUS ENOUGH TO KIND OF BLOW IT UP A BIT BUT YOU CAN'T SEE THEM ALL. BUT IT IS PRETTY AMAZING. BUT JUST TO SUMMARIZE THE TOP LANGUAGES IN OUR CITY ARE SPANISH ARABIC, SOMALI AND NEPALI. SO WHEN CAME TO REALIZE A UNIVERSAL CONCERN WAS LEARNING ENGLISH. WE HAVE A GREAT PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM THAT HAS HAD QUITE A LEARNING CURVE TO LEARN HOW TO IF BEST SERVE SUCH A DIVERSE BODY OF FAMILIES. BUT WHAT WE CAME UP WITH WAS THIS NEWCOMERS, SO IT'S SERVING MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN THREE DIFFERENT LOCATIONS THROUGH BILINGUAL AND CULTURAL ORIENTATION. THE SAME SCHOOL SYSTEM OFFICER OFFERS FREE ADULT ENGLISH CLASSES. I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THROUGHOUT THE CITY BUT SADLY THERE ARE POCKETS WHERE THERE ARE NOT THESE CLASSES. THERE ARE ALSO CONSTANT CUT BACKS SO WHAT DID EXIST IS SHRINKING. SO IF SOMEONE WAS WANTING TO ATTEND AN ENGLISH CLASS THEY WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO ENROLL UNTIL FALL OF THIS YEAR. SO UX YOU CAN SEE THERE'S A HUGE DEMAND. WE ALSO HAVE A COMMUNITY COLLEGE THAT HAS ENTRY LEVEL ENGLISH CLASSES WHICH ARE NOT FOR CREDIT FOR A DEGREE PROGRAM BUT JUST TO SORT OF HELP FOLKS AND THEY ARE AIL THE USE FINANCIAL AID TO PAY FOR THOSE SO THE DEMOGRAPHICS IS CHANGING AS IT GROWTH IS ALL IMMIGRANTS TOO. OF COURSE THEY NEED TO LEARN ACCOMPLISH AND THE BEST WAY TO DO THAT IS TO PRACTICE IT WITH ANOTHER PERSON. SO THE IDEA WAS PRETTY BASIC TO BRING IN THOSE WHO WANT TO WORK ON ENGLISH AND BRING IN THE VOLUNTEERS. SO AS MENTIONED BEFORE BY WILL, THE PUBLIC LIBRARY REALLY DOES SERVE A VITAL ROLE IN THIS SENSE THAT IT HAS CONTINUED TO BE THE GATHERING PLACE FOR THIS WHOLE COMMUNITY. SO THE COMMUNITY IS CONCENTRATED IN A COUPLE NAMEDS SO OTHER BRANCHES HAVE STARTED TO REPLICATE THAT PROGRAM. SO WHERE HAS IT BEEN SUCCESSFUL? I'M GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE FACTORS RIGHT HERE. HIGH SCHOOLS, COMMUNITY SUPPORT HOW WE HAVE HAD TO ADAPT AND OF COURSE THE CONSTANT DEMAND. WE HAVE HAD AT LEAST ONE WHO WENT ON TO BECOME A LIBRARY, AND SHE HAD NO IDEA SHE WANTED TO BE ONE UNTIL SHE SERVED WITH US. WE HAVE RETURNING VETERANS AND WE HAVE NEW REFUGEES SO IT'S BEEN A HEALING EXPERIENCE FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED TO HAVE VETERANS WHO MAY NOT HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY IN THE PAST TO ACTUALLY TALK TO SOMEONE FROM A COUNTRY IN WHICH THEY'VE SERVED. SO THAT'S BEEN AN EXCITING COMPONENT TO IT. SO THIS IS A PHOTO OF OUR LIBRARY AMBASSADORS. I FIND FOLK WHO PARTICIPATE IN OUR ENGLISH CONVERSATION CLUB WHO MIGHT BE FEELING THEY'RE STILL INEMPLOYED OR MORE LIKELY THEY ARE UNDEREMPLOYED AND NOT ABLE TO GET A JOB YET. WE USED TO BRING IN COMMUNITY MEMBERS BEFORE WE HAD STAFF MEMBERS AND EVERY YEAR WE HAVE A BIG CELEBRATION, AND WE WERE ABLE THE TO PARTNER WITH A LOCAL INSURANCE COMPANY WHICH FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS HAS PROVIDED US MONEY TO MAKE THAT BIG AND FANCY AS IT WERE.
