CiL 2005 --still simmering
1:00 PM EDT 7/6/05
I admit that I'm still processing stuff I learned about at the intimate Computers in Libraries conference way back in March. I had a pile of furiously scribbled notes upon returning from D.C. and a lot of zeal to apply my new knowledge, all of which got buried under the pressure of returning to my regular work at a job that I had held for only two weeks at that time. Boy, was I buried.

I heard of Jybe for the first time at CiL and absorbed only enough to jot down the name followed by a question mark. I can now happily report that I have used Jybe successfullly to conduct a cross-continent training session with a new All Aboard moderator. It was much more effective than a telephone conversation and much cheaper (free emoticon) than setting up a Live Meeting. Three months later, it's not only part of my vocabulary, it's part of my toolbox.

It's not too late to process a 4-month old conference. Share your experience of CiL --I'm sure quite a bit of it flew right by me. It was such a great conference that I don't mind revisiting it ...until next year!

For a memory-jogging list of CiL topics, take a look at this "debriefing & sharing" blog post from TameTheWeb.

Our All Aboard discussion is the virtual equivalent and this space is your whiteboard. Let's add to the list.

There was so much discussion about blogging, rss and IM'ing - I wonder how many libraries ended up implementing any of these after the conference?

Totally. I missed it, but felt the buzz all the way over here!

I don't know if Marianne was at CiL, but she has put together an online course about RSS that should make it easier for libraries to implement it:
What is RSS and Why Should I Care?

I think there is a real roadblock for library staff to put ideas into practice when they've only heard some buzz about them. I love Marianne's careful and empathetic explanations of the kinds of things that the techies take for granted --like a newbie's first look at an RSS feed page. I quote from the tutorial:

"Ack! I can't read that!"

I guess it's up to those of us who go to conferences to provide effective translations of what we learned to the folks back home. That is, after we've figured it out ourselves. ;)
