Is anyone going to the PLA conference in Seattle in February?

WebJunction will be there with a program, and a members reception. Let us know if you'll be in town!

We hope that everyone will be coming to PLA in Seattle. The local arrangements committee has been working hard to plan a great conference, and Seattle is a wonderful city to visit. I came to Seattle the first time to accompany my husband to a conference, and 8 months later had moved here!

I wish I could ... but *in February*? Bring your raincoats ...

The rain has already started. It looks to be a long winter here!

I just found out I will be able to go! I'll have to make sure I spread the "gospel" of WebJunction.

Just look at Seattle's rain as an 'opportunity' to show off your latest winter gear. I'll be there with my brand-new hand-knit fleecy-soft muffler keeping me warm. Why do you think REI and Eddie Bauer thrive in the Pacific Northwest? Bundling up can be fun!

Look forward to meeting all of you at the WJ table and functions. I'll be there Thursday and Saturday.

All,

We're planning a member reception for Thursday Feb 27 from 4.30 to 6 at the Sheraton (can't remember the room just now, but I guess it has a lovely view of the city!!). So far, planning to have wine, beer, and munchies. Will also have a welcome (from me and our program manager Marilyn Gell Mason).

Requests or ideas for other things we should do when those of us who are there have the chance to meet "in person" ??

Fire away...

It looks like I'll be playing hooky from school for much of that week, but I can't miss the opportunity to meet some WJ folks in the flesh!

As for Northwest fashion, go for the layered look -- that is, you put on a nice slinky dress, and then you layer over it with a sweater, raincoat, rain hat, muffler, fleece socks, & waterproof boots. Oh well, at least we're all in the same boat/puddle here.
RE: RE: Member Reception

I would love to attend the Reception, just found out last week that I'll be coming to Seattle. Thanks for the invitation!

Perfect! It will be great to meet you (and welcome to 'All Aboard' while we're at it!)

To All: here's the registration form for the members reception.

Note: the members' reception is listed as "WebJunction Reception" with all of OCLC's happenings at the conference; all you have to do is scroll down the page to select it.

I hope to see more and more of you signing up! And see you there in a few weeks...

THANK YOU so much for the awesome WJ reception at PLA. It topped off an overwhelmingly educational and enlightening day for me. I attended Eugene PL's presentation on planning and implementing the next wave of library technolgy; I visited with four major ILS vendors; and I networked with many other libraries there. Because the event was so close to home, more than half of Everett PL's staff were able to attend the event. It's got us buzzing about implementing a new ILS within the next year or two. The WJ event was icing on the cake! Again, thanks,

Chris Cooper

I'm going to change the topic title of this thread so that we can use this space to talk about library conferences as they come up.

Anyone going to Orlando this summer?

Used to live in Fairbanks so it would be fun to go back (this time of year it's not bad!) but you're right - don't hold your breath!

Montana Library Association has it's conference April 24 - 27. One of our programs is on Book Cart Drill Teams!

I see I'm a bit late on this reply with the conference this just last week, but was gonna put in some info on "drill teams". I sure you know there is a book, Library Book Cart Precision Drill Team Manual, by MCCrachen. We have had a drill team for several years. We specialize our costume for the event, wear and decorate the carts for the Christmas parade with battery operated lights, or the homecoming parade, "go Bulldogs", or the Blueberry parade, we wear electric Blue Doris Day type hairdo wigs, shirts, etc.. We also have had the Friends do a banner for us, that our students carry in front of the team, just like the bands in the Macy's day parade. IF you want some more ideas, just email me, and I will provide more and pictures, for your brainstorming sessions. Danny

Danny, any interest in writing an article for WJ all about building a Drill Cart Team for your library? We'd love it if you did!

3:02 PM EDT 6/20/04 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
Had fun with our Drill Team program during the conference and hopefully there are a few more being created around the state now! The ideas sound great - we only march in one parade but it would be fun to do others. I keep trying to get the university librarians to join the Homecoming parade each fall.

Hey! What ever happened to that article idea?? Looks like I'd better revive this topic...

I'm wondering who's gonna be at Internet Librarian in Monterey next month.

I'll be there, with Janie - our program (about WebJunction!) is on Wednesday. Come check it out!!!

Also, did anyone attend the Association for Small and Rural Libraries Conference in Ohio last week? I'd love to hear more about that.

Finally ... did anyone go to LITA last month? Any news??

Replying to my own post here. A colleage of mine from oclc sent me some pictures from the ASRL conference last week. She took some of the booth, a new bookmobile, and etc. Did you know I was a TV star??

Enjoy! (Thanks Wei!)

You're right - nothing ever developed with the article on book cart drill teams! I just got back from the MPLA conference (joint conference with the Colorado Association of Libraries) in Denver, and there was a great drill team demo there. I can check on who that was if you want.

No WebJunction mentioned in any of the sessions I attended, which suprised me. I have to admit, I can't remember now if there was a display in the vendor area? I was recovering from a touch of the flu, so things are a bit foggy. Also recovering (still!) from our library's migration from Dynix to Sirsi. It is quite a process. I'm sure it won't be long until we are totally in control again, but right now several of us are going home at night to a few glasses of wine!

BTW, You really need to read Calvin and Hobbes... (and I love Maddog's subliminal message!)

I just finished with a bout of the flu myself. Ick! I do believe that the CO state library did some WJ stuff in the exhibit there. I have not yet seen pictures, but heard there are some out there. Maybe Rose can tell us?

Hello,

Unfortunately, we didn't get to do a program on WebJunction. I think competition was a little stiffer this year because it was a joint MPLA and Colo. Library Association conference. I did submit a proposal to do a program, but it was rejected emoticon However, I did do a Poster session on WebJunction Colorado and got lots of traffic and interest in the project! We also had booth displays. phenley, you must have missed the booth display that we had in the exhibits area, which would have been easy given the amount of displays in our small booth. Here's a couple of pictures from the conference.

Only one week until Internet Librarian in Monterey and I am so excited to be teaming up with Chrystie and Kathy for our presentation! Surely it can't be just us three from WebJunction who will be at this conference? If there are more coming, perhaps we can all meet for dinner one night...

Rose - yes, I remember seeing a WebJunction display now that I've seen your pix. I didn't get to any of the poster sessions, but I thought that was a great idea and may suggest that for our state association conference next spring (and possibly a WebJunction program too!). As far as I know, none of the program suggestions from MPLA members were accepted - I'm hoping for better luck next year in Wyoming.

Here I am at the Netspeed conference in Calgary Alberta, and just had lunch with Joe Anderson (such a shame you were not able to attend Chrystie!).

It was so great to be able to meet up in person and discuss web junction, the plans and ideals behind it and the problems facing the library community.

This is such an excellent site, and I am so proud to be a part of it.

Just wanted to say that and let all the people that work so hard in bringing the library community together to share experiences and information, that this is such a worthwhile cause and you all do a fantatic job!

Re: Library Conferences & Meetings
2:34 PM EST 1/25/05 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
Unfortunately, I missed *both* the ALISE meetings AND the advocacy epidemic programs. My schedule got the better of me!

One of the *most* interesting things to me about ALAMW was, honestly, truly, the OCLC symposium. It was a FASCINATING discussion about the 'gaming generation' and how they're going to change the way we do business, think about information, etc. WJ was even discussed as a possible 'gaming' type application. Why? Because we have fun. Why else???

Maybve we should start a new topic on games in libraries. Or, find out how may people here are gamers too....
Re: Library Conferences & Meetings
2:31 PM EST 1/26/05 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
I am intrigued! Not being in the "gaming generation," I am scrambling to learn more. The Shifted Librarian blog has a post on libraries and gamers.

I'm also impressed that PLA was blogging the conference! The session about "What if patrons could define their own due date?" has some innovative ideas. I'd love to hear from anyone who could fill in more about that one.

I'd love to hear from Betha, Max, and Steven about how the program went - I already heard from one participant thre (Michael Stephens) that the program was great! But how was it on your side?? Should we be putting this in the shameless promotions topic???

Also, any other tid-bits from the conference that stick out in your minds? I was sad to miss it.

I'll be at BCLA next month. Anyone else going to be there? Let's hook up!!!
Re: Library Conferences & Meetings
4:50 PM EST 3/22/05 as a reply to Chrystie Hill.
I can avoid being 'shameless' by saying how great it was to have Steven and Max collaborating on our WJ presentation at the conference. We organized it to be less of a formal talk and more of a relaxed discussion with all of us sharing thoughts and experiences with online communities. Even though we were in the last time slot on the last day and competing with Gary Price and Tara Calishain, we had a good audience who chimed in with their own questions and opinions.

The rest of the CiL conference was just buzzing with emerging technologies. I want one of these --the OQO model 01-- whenever the price comes down out of the ozone, that is. It's a paperback book-sized laptop with "a working Windows XP computer with a FireWire port, built-in 802.11b wireless, and Bluetooth" - !!!

It was great to be in the presence of so many 'movers and shakers' emoticon
