Atlanta Summit participants --welcome!
5:50 PM EST 2/18/10
Hello!

You are the first group to assemble for a Project Compass summit. I have been looking forward to this for a long time. It will be wonderful to attach faces to names and to be part of a groundswell of energy.

I am Betha Gutsche, the project coordinator. You have all been bombarded by email messages from me over the past six months. I want to thank you in advance for your patience and for your sustained enthusiasm.

A little about me: I have been at WebJunction for almost five years. I have moved through various roles as community facilitator, online learning developer, editor-in-chief of Competencies for the Library Field, and now Project Compass coordinator.

Although I am excited to get together in person, I also know the power of online collaboration. The summit will last only two days but I hope the connections we forge will carry forward much longer. This group is our virtual meeting place for all things related to the summits. In addition, the project (with your contributions) will be building a Community of Practice around Workforce Resources on WebJunction.

When I'm not at work, I'm spending too much time working on our old house and not enough time gardening, biking, hiking, kayaking. After all, I do live in the great and beautiful Northwest.

Please introduce yourselves --I'd like to get to know you better!

Hello, everyone. My name is Barbara Price and I currently work with the MS Library Commission. I am an OLD librarian. I retired several years ago and became a VISTA Volunteer with a literacy organization for several years. I returned to librarianship in November, 2008 and am still enjoying the exciting world of libraries, especially public libraries! I have a very varied background in libraries and business and am looking forward to meeting everyone and finding out what libraries are doing to help job seekers in today's new world.

Hi!
I am Jennifer Pratt, the Chief of Library Development at the State Library of North Carolina. I have been involved with Project Compass from the days of its conception (what a fun time that was!). I love working with the project team, my NC group and my Web Junction group. We have all enjoyed learning to collaborate long distance on this project. At least I think we all have enjoyed it.

I joined the State LIbrary of North Carolina two and a half years ago, time has really flown. Before that I was the Library Director in Haywood County, NC which is just west of Asheville and often called the Gateway to the Smokies. The main library was in Waynesville which is a western North Carolina town with a very strong mountain craft and music community as well as a great public library. My husband and I raised our three children there and then followed our wandering hearts to the big city of Raleigh for a change in scenery and pace. We loved it there in the mountains and now we are loving the new adventures that come with living in an urban environment.

I was raised on the west coast of Florida so I am most happy when I am submersed in some sort of water; ocean, lake, river or creek. I am a great floater and inner tube sitter. I also like any kind of boating adventure. I read fiction, my favorite genres are mysteries, and magical realism. I also like to talk about books, so make sure we spend some time talking about the last book we read. Oh and I love to cook and I love to eat so we can talk about food also.

I look forward to meeting you,

Jennifer Pratt

Hi, I'm Pat Carterette, Director of Continuing Education at the Georgia Public Library Service. I'm excited that the first Project Compass Summit will be held here in Atlanta, my new home town (moved here from Ohio in April 2008). Prior to moving here, I worked for 20 years (with the exception of one year) for the Cleveland Heights-University Heights PL in Cleveland's inner-ring suburb of Cleveland Heights. I held various positions there - from public services librarian to Branch Manager, but my last ten years there were as Training and Staff Development Coordinator.

I hope some of you will be able to tack a few days on to your trip and explore Atlanta. I'll be happy to provide a list of my own personal favorites if you'd like some suggestions. MARTA (public transit train system) is cheap and easy to use in getting around the city. Unfortunately, the closest MARTA station is a one-mile shuttle ride from the hotel back to the airport. By the way, Atlanta is also known for its restaurants - there are a ton of fantastic restaurants here, though I'm not familiar with any near our hotel or the airport.

I'm a member of several professional organizations including ALA, PLA, OLC (Ohio Library Council), GLA (Georgia Library Association) and this year am president of ALA's 300+ member Learning Round Table. Just for fun, I'm a co-founder of the GO-GO's (an informal network consisting of Georgia and Ohio library people who meet for happy hour at national conferences), member of ALA BiblioQuilters (librarians who quilt) and the Georgia BiblioRunners (Georgia librarians who enjoy running).

I hope I didn't bore you to tears. See you soon...

Hello! I’m Raye Oldham and I’m part of the Project Compass Team from the State Library of North Carolina. I became the Continuing Education Consultant in 2003 and my role in this position has truly evolved due to technology and budget influences. One thing that has remained constant is that each year I enjoy many opportunities to meet new people and work on exciting projects – just like this one!

I grew up in MI then moved to AZ, MS, CA and AK before moving to NC in 1996. I am a wife, mother of three adult children, and a recent (and joyful) empty nester. Did I mention joyful?!

Authors I’m fond of are Jan Karon, Debbie Macomber, and Nicholas Sparks. I usually prefer feel good stories (I think that’s a real genre) and historical fiction; but I’m in two book clubs to push me into reading authors and genres I probably wouldn’t choose for myself.

I look forward to seeing those of you I know and meeting those of you I don't,
Raye.

Greetings everyone. We are very excited about the Atlanta summit. It seems like we have been planning this for a long time and it's finally right around the corner. Looking forward to meeting and working with everyone.
I am a library consultant at the State Library and have been involved in Project Compass along with my two colleagues Jennifer Pratt and Raye Oldham. As a library consultant I work with libraries across NC, with a primary focus on marketing and communications. I have been at the State Library for 7 years. Previously I worked in public libraries for 20+years, in various roles, including outreach services, reference and public relations.
Outside of work I enjoy anything outdoors - hiking, walking, biking, and anything at the lake or beach. My husband and I take dance classes with friends (we'll never be Fred and Ginger) but we enjoy it. Recently I started taking African drum classes - a definite challenge for coordinating my hands and brain together. And when there is free time I always enjoy curling up with a good book, not a kindle convert. I have two "grown" sons, who are working toward independence.

Hello all,
My name is Jesse Kelley and I'm a new reference librarian here at the Mississippi Library Commission. I'm traveling to Atlanta with my colleague Barbara Price to meet some great librarians and consider some new ideas. I've been at the Library Commission for about seven months now and I'm just starting to get an idea of how important librarianship really is to our state. I'm excited about this trip to Atlanta and looking forward to meeting all of you.

During my free time I enjoy reading (of course), playing tennis, jogging, and watching movies. I'm excited about trying some new restaurants in Atlanta and would be happy for any advice on where to go. See you all soon.

Barbara, you get kudos for being the first participant to dive into the introductions! I can tell that you will add great insights to the summit gathering.

Pat, it's great to have an Atlanta insider in the group. Plus I know about your high energy level.

Jesse, I look forward to meeting you at the summit.

Hi, my name is Chrystie Hill and I work with WebJunction. I have to admit that my heart skipped a beat when I clicked on this post and I started to read about all of this fabulous energy and experience we'll have the opportunity to share in Atlanta. I am very excited to meet you (or see some of you again) and very much look forward to participating in the first Project Compass summit. I am very hopeful that even just setting the time aside to think and talk about some of the issues we're currently facing in libraries will bring in new ideas and inspirations that we can all take back to our work with us.

On a personal note, I'm excited about the city our summit will be taking place in! This will be my first time back to Atlanta in three years, and it's one of my favorite cities to visit in the US. I have a dear friend there, and am hoping to have the opportunity to see her as well. Crossing fingers for good weather!!

Hello,
I am Susan Hayden from the West Virginia Library Commission. I am looking forward to working with this group to learn how WVLC can better assist WV public libraries and other WV state agencies to help our citizens survive this economy.

I am WVLC's Adult Library Consultant and have held this position for over 10 years. My duties are diverse and challenging. I am one of those adamant librarians that believe that civilization can not possibly survive without public libraries.

Outside of work, I am a new grandmother and totally in love with a marvelous little person who will soon be one year old. I have enjoyed this snowy winter because it has been particularly advantageous to curling up with great reads with fabulous music in the background.

Hello all!

I'm Jennifer Peterson (the other Jennifer on the project team - we share initials too! - so feel free to call me Jen) and I'm thrilled to be a part of this project.

I'll admit up front that I have a true obsession with collaboration!

For the past 4 1/2 years at WebJunction, I've worked with library folks from around the country on the Spanish Language Outreach and Rural Library Sustainability projects and in support of all the collaboration that goes on at WebJunction, both on the site and in our online events, including the recent online conference and our webinar series.

I look forward to our time together and to the outcomes of our collaboration. In these challenging times, libraries around the country will surely benefit from the knowledge you share and the partnerships you foster as a part of the project!

On a personal note, I share the pleasure of parenting, along with my husband (a postal historian and math tutor), 2 outstanding children (9 and 11) who love reading and thrift stores as much as I do!

My name is Denise Lyons and I am a Consultant with the South Carolina State Library. I've been with SCSL nearly two years. Before that I was in Dallas (and Columbia, Chicago, Boston and I'm originally from Michigan). Columbia, SC is now my home.

Workforce Development has been one of the areas that I have been involved but I'm also a general consultant so I work in a variety of areas with the public libraries as well as various agencies and committees. I'm excited to be a part of a variety of great projects here at SCSL and working with our public libraries statewide, especially assisting them with their workforce challenges. I also have particular interest and passion for Literacy and Youth/YA services. Recently we launched a significant initative in Family Literacy creating a Family Literacy Activity Calendar called SC Day by Day which we are using across the state to work with families and classrooms.

I enjoy traveling (some of my favorite places are the SC beaches, Lake Michigan, Chicago and Ireland), reading, cooking, live music, and volunteering.

Hello everyone, my name is Juliet Douglas, and I have enjoyed reading all of the introductions. I am a Senior Librarian with the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library in Florida. Apologies for posting my introduction at the last minute, but just this week I started in a newly created position at my library that combines Adult Literacy and E-Government Services into one position. I am honored to be participating in the Project Compass Summit, and I look forward to adding to the discussion about workforce recovery. I am also excited about flying in to Atlanta because though I am from the Mid-South (Memphis), I have never visited the city before now. :-)

See you all very soon!

I just saw the Library Journal announcement of the latest round of Movers and Shakers. I was thrilled but not at all surprised to see Denise Lyons (SC) in the lineup. Denise is in the group of Change Agents ---how appropriate for our efforts on workforce recovery.

Congratulations Denise!! emoticon

Hello from Wisconsin. I'm Barb Huntington. I'm the Youth and Special Needs Consultant for the Division for Libraries, Technology, and Community Learning, within the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. One of my responsibilities is to coordinate efforts at the state level to help libraries in their ongoing efforts to help patrons with employment related training and issues. I've been in my position almost 10 years.

My husband and I enjoy traveling, especially in our RV. Our Westie, Scallywag, is usually with us. We spend quite a bit of time in central Illinois and the D.C. area visiting our two daughters and their families, as well as sunny locations in the winter. Often when we are on the road I work on scrapbooking, card making, and reading. We love visiting historical sites everywhere we go.

I am looking forward to the Summit in Portland.

Welcome Barbara! I remember your active participation in the online meetings we did last fall. I look forward to your contributions to the summit.

My husband and I have a camper van, a VW Adventurewagon, which we love. It's not quite up to the class of RV but it is our mobile "cabin in the woods." We can compare travel adventures.
