Growth Chart
6:18 PM EDT 7/7/07
I recently purchased a Clifford the Big Red Dog Growth Calendar. A couple of weeks ago during a What's the BIG Idea storytime we talked about growing and changing. Then we decorated a dog bone and went out to the chart. Everybody was measured and their dog bone taped to the chart.

I must say this is the best $8.95 I have ever spent! For the past two weeks almost every child from toddlers to teenagers have come in to the library and been drawn to this growth chart. They stand there and measure themselves. They compare themselves to other names on the chart. The tweens tend to measure their parents too. I ask if the kids if they want to add their name to a dog bone and put it on the chart too. I then explain that they are growing everyday and they'll need to check next time they are in the library to see if they've grown any taller.

Thanks for sharing this. I'm glad you're having so much interest from such a broad age range. When you are measuring, do you talk about measuring in standard units like feet and inches or non-standard units like straws or pieces of spaghetti?

Are you growing anything, like plants, and measuring the changes?

Is anyone else doing work with growth, change, and measurement that they would like to share?

Hope everyone's summer is going well.

What a great "idea". I'll give it a try at my library!
