Bethalto Public Library has gone to the dogs!
Every third Saturday for one hour, the Bethalto Public Library (Lewis and Clark Library System) is host to a loyal group of dogs, trainers and patrons who participate in the "Paws to Read" program. Based on a similar program at the Hayner Public Library in Alton (Bow Wow Pow Wow), the Paws to Read program began in January, 2006, and has been a successful draw for children since that time.
According to Sis O'Brien, the Children's Librarian at Bethalto Public Library, assorted books are set out so the children have a quick choice, then they pick a furry friend and sit down and read. The reading may be very short and then on to the next dog, but the children get the chance to read for enjoyment without criticism.
"Of course we always have doggie treats on hand for jobs well done for our canine guests. I think the dogs look forward to Library visit as much as the children. The number of participants (both animal and human)varies from month to month. We have old, young, large, small and everything in between of both dogs and patrons participating, even though the program is primarily for the children. I would recommend a program like this for every library. Very little staff work for the great return." - Sis O'Brien
So grab the doggie biscuits and a good book, and wait for the kids to arrive!
