  1. What does my computer need to use Wimba Classroom?
You need at least a 56k Internet connection, and:
    • Windows 2000, XP or Vista, Mac OS 10.2+ or Linux
    • Internet Explorer 5.0+, Firefox, Netscape 7.0+, Safari 1.1+.
    • 128 MB RAM (256 MB recommended)
    • Sound card (unless using telephone for audio).
    • For full interaction: Headset with integrated microphone, headphones with separate microphone, or a telephone near your computer.
    • For listening only: Speakers or headphones.
    • Up to date version of Java
    • QuickTime 6.3+ - for viewing archived sessions only
  2. How do I know my computer will connect to a Wimba Classroom session?
Whenever connecting to a Wimba Classroom session for the first time on a particular computer, be sure to run the Setup Wizard well ahead of time. This will ensure you have the required software and configuration.
  3. How do I know if I have a sound card?
Look at the bottom right corner of your monitor window (near the clock) for an icon of a loudspeaker. If you have it, then your computer has a sound card. If you don't, it might not, or their may be some problem with it. Also, if you have a sound card, the computer case will have small, round, speaker and microphone jacks, often on the back of the case.
  4. I have a sound card, but no sound, what do I do?
If you know you have a sound card, and have run the Setup Wizard but can't hear sound, try these steps:
    • Double-click on the speaker icon in the bottom right corner of your screen to check the settings. Make sure all volume sliders are at or near the top, and uncheck all mute boxes.
    • Check any volume or mute controls on your speakers or headphone cable. Most computer speakers also must be powered on separately.
    • Check the connection from your speakers or headset to the computer. Make certain the plugs are inserted completely. Check that they are inserted into the correct jacks. Most often (though not always) the speaker/headphones jack is green or black, and the microphone jack is red..
  5. What if I can't get past the Wizard's Java and connectivity test?
If you cannot pass the first few Wizard tests, regarding connectivity or Java, you probably need to update your java virtual machine. We often see this with users of Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6, although this issue can occur for any type of user. If you are running IE, we recommend that you upgrade your Microsoft Virtual Machine. You can do so from Microsoft's website: windowsupdate.microsoft.com/.

Alternatively, Netscape and IE users alike can install the Sun Java Virtual Machine. You can do so from Sun's website: java.sun.com/getjava/download.html.

After you install the software, restart your computer and run the Wizard again.
  6. What do I enter for my login?
Horizon Wimba will require a Room ID and a Name. Normally, the link you receive to attend a session will fill in the Room ID for you. If not, refer to your invitation for the Room ID. For Name we recommend you enter your full name so that facilitators and other participants can identify you.
  7. When I'm in the session, I can't hear anything; what should I do?
First check that the volume of your headset or speakers is adjusted properly. If you have run the Wizard and passed the tests, and still cannot hear the audio, try one of these steps:
    1. Click on the speaker icon on the navigation bar that sits just above the chat window, and verify the volume is turned up here.
    2. Exit the presentation and log on again
    3. Close all web browser windows and log back in
    4. Reboot your computer and log back in
If none of those options work: Click "Help" on the  tool bar, fill out the form, and submit.
  8. Why does the audio vary in quality?
Many factors can cause variability in the quality of your connection to the room, many of these are out of your control, but here some steps to try in the following order:
    • Close down your email application and any other software that is accessing the Internet.
    • Close down all other running applications.
    • Disable any firewalls and anti-virus software.
    • If you are running Windows 98, reboot your system before connecting to the Wimba Classroom, to ensure maximum resources are at hand.
  9. Should AOL users do anything different to use Wimba Classroom?
Instead of using the AOL browser when running the Horizon Wimba Wizard, use Firefox or Internet Explorer. In other words, connect to the Internet using AOL, as you normally do, then minimize AOL and launch Firefox or Internet Explorer from your desktop or Start Menu, and then run the Setup Wizard.
  10. How do I "turn off all pop-up blockers?"
Take a look at our How to Turn Off Pop-up Blockers page.
  11. Why am I unable to view an archived session?
When an archive is opened (unlike a live presentation) two windows open and the archive starts playing automatically. The first window, the Presentation window, looks like the normal Wimba Classroom window. The second window, the Navigation window, contains the audio control bar and the list of archived slides. If either window does not open, make certain you have disabled any pop-up blockers . If both windows open but the archive won't play, you may need to reinstall QuickTime.
  12. Why can't I use Windows Media Player to view an archive?
Horizon Wimba, our web conferencing vendor, does not support Windows Media Player. They only support QuickTime for playing back archives at this time.
  13. My question is not listed, what do I do?
If your question is not listed here and you still require help, there are several options:
