It's the Pictures That Got Small

The availability of quality, re-mastered digital prints of cinema from the 1930s and 1940s has created unprecedented interest among patrons of all ages and educational levels. This program will address the viability of collecting classic films as a draw for library patrons, as well as the artistic justification of owning such entertainment. Annotated filmographies and sources for esoteric and specialty titles will be included.

Challenges to Children's & Youth Resources in Public Libraries and Media Centers

Find out who's challenging books, videos and Web sites aimed at children and youth, where they're doing it and why. Rosanne Cordell and Doug Archer will give an update on the latest trends in the censorship of library materials. They will share from their combined experiences as recent members of ALA's Intellectual Freedom Round Table Executive Board, ALA's Intellectual Freedom Committee, and the Board of Directors of the Freedom to Read Foundation.

Cataloging 101: Video Recordings

Now that the staff has been cut back to the bare bones, it's your job to catalog the DVDs along with everything else, and not just the feature films but also that scary-looking stack the local historical society sent over. Learn the basics of DVD cataloging, along with practical tips and advice to help you to trust your own cataloger's judgment. Cataloging 101 sessions are intended for people who are in one-person departments, are new to a particular format, or need a refresher and some practical advice.

Making the Most of Your Classical Musical Collection: How Catalogers Build & Reference Great Classical Music Catalog Records

Does your stomach get queasy when a patron asks for a recording of Air with Variation in G Major by Mozart? Or do your palms sweat when cataloging Piano Concerto No. 5 in E Flat Major by Beethoven? You are not alone! This program will show how to find classical music when given the popular title through the use of authority records. Distinctive and genertic uniform titles and the pitfalls of keyword searching will also be covered. Catalogers will also be shown how value-added cataloging will help both public service staff and patrons.
