I was wondering if anyone has a list of some good budgeting courses. I am a director with no experience in this area. Sadly, graduate school did not prepare me for running a library.

Royce, first of all, congratulations on your new position!

I learned a few library management principles in school, but nothing so nuts-and-bolts (and critical) as budgeting. WebJunction has a handful of courses on the subject --one's a LE@D (U of North Texas) course on Basic Budgeting, which is more library-focused than the more generic budgeting courses that we offer from Skillsoft. If you take any of them, let us know how effective they are.

I've no courses to recommend, but do suggest that you sit down with an accountant/bookkeeper who does work for libraries and see how similar libraries have their budgets structured. He/she may also offer suggestions.

An auditor may also do this, but I've found their work to be too broad gauged for budgeting purposes. That said, there are federal and state regulations which a non-CPA accountant would not need to know but which are important. Sarbanes-Oxley comes to mind: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarbanes-Oxley_Act
