Agronomy

Overview

Agronomy is the science of using plants for food, fuel, feed and fiber and includes research and practice in plant breeding and crop rotation, weed and pest control, and meteorology.  The U.S. Department of Agriculture oversees a number of initiatives relating to agronomy.

Key Resources

  • Crop Explorer

"The Crop Explorer Web Site features near-real-time global crop condition information based on satellite imagery and weather data. Thematic maps of major crop growing regions depict vegetative vigor, precipitation, temperature, and soil moisture. Time-series charts depict growing season data for specific agro-meteorological zones. Regional crop calendars and crop area maps are also available for selected regions."  The Crop Explorer User Guide demonstrates how to use the web site and what types of data can be accessed.

  • Pest Management

"Pest management includes a wide range of programs addressing human health, environmental and economic issues related to the management of pest populations through a variety of science based technologies. Americans want safe, pest and disease-free homes, schools, parks, recreational areas, as well as a safe and affordable supply of blemish-free food products and a wholesome pesticide-free environment."  The Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service (CSREES) oversees the Department of Agriculture'ss programs on Bio-based Pest Management, Integrated Pest Management, Invasive Species, and Pesticides.
  • Weather & Climate

Weather and Climate are key factors affecting crop production and commodity prices.  The USDA in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) formed the Joint Agricultural Weather Facility (JAWF) which monitors the weather and climate conditions and reports on the effects on crop production.  This web site provides access to U.S. Agricultural Weather Highlights, the weekly Weather and Crop Bulletin, as well as Major World Crop Areas and Climatic Profiles which provides "benchmark climate and crop data for key producing regions and countries."
