DOL Workshop: Technology Resources for Supporting Public Access Computing
9:45 AM EDT 7/27/05
Welcome to all participants in my 2005 workshops and to anyone else who wants to drop by this forum. Right now I am still in the process of preparing my workshop, so if there is anything in particular that you would like to cover, please post a reply to let me know. I'll do my best to try to cover whatever you are interested in or to direct you to resources that might assist you.

As the materials for my workshop become available, I will be posting them here so that you can have access to electronic copies.

Looking forward to hearing from you and seeing you at the workshops.

Sheila

Here's the list of attendees for 8/10/05 and the evaluation form.

And now the PowerPoint presentation.

Windows XP shared computer toolkit

Here is the link to discussion of the WindowsXP shared computer toolkit we were talking about--it also has a link to an article about the toolkit and the download site:

The toolkit is now in public release (out of beta testing) and it is still free:

--Chrystie,

Yesterday was my second of three and the feedback forms seem to indicate the participants found it useful. One of my favorite things to talk about during the workshop is how helpful and friendly the real persons on the other side of the screen at WJ are--I'll try to get into more detail on that later and more directly with you Chrystie.

all the best,
Sheila

Hi, Sheila--

I learned a lot at the Public Access Computing workshop. One funny thing I hadn't realized: articles I e-mailed to myself from WebJunction require logging in before they can be read. You showed us some wonderful resources and I wanted to be sure I could find them again.

I found the link to each article in my e-mail when I got home, but clicking on the link did not reveal the article. I needed to log in to WebJunction first-- then go back and click the link.

Thanks for a great day--
Amy
Links in email sent from WJ
3:08 PM EDT 9/16/05 as a reply to Amy Howlett.
Update to problems with links in emails: Amy and I fooled around reproducing this problem for a while and concluded that the problem was the way that the URL was getting displayed in her email--either the whole URL was not coming through in the clickable link or it was breaking at the end of a line.

The "solution" is that if you click on an email in a link and your browser ends up displaying an error message, try cutting and pasting the URL into your browser address/location field. You shouldn't need to login when using links to articles emailed directly from WJ.

--Amy,

I just did a quick test with the "Focus on Online Community for Public Libraries" (http://vt.webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=11257) and the URL that I received in email worked fine without signing in. If you give me a specific example of one of your emailed URL's that did not work, I'll check it out and let you know what I find. You can just forward the email to me directly and I will post anything I learn back here in the forum.
