What vegetables can be planted in fall?

A coworker ased me this question recently. I told her I had read in a local paper that late August in Western Washington is a good time to plant a fall crop of peas, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower and kale. I took my chances and planted new seeds the second week of September.

However, I read in the 9/25 edition of the Everett Herald: "With the exception of vegetable starts you find in some nurseries or hardy greens such as kale, it’s a little late to start fall and winter gardening. It’s not too early to bone up on the subject and plan for next year."

Does anyone from the Seattle area have a success story about fall vegetable crops?

Kale seems to be hardy enough to weather the "weather" during winter. However the soggy northwest soil sometimes means that plants will rot before they have a chance to grow.
