First Book Club book!

There has been interest with this group to start a book club, so for our first book club book I decided to go with a light-hearted non-fiction book called The Geography of Bliss: One Grump's Search for the Happiest Places in the World by NPR foreign correspondent Eric Weiner.

I've only read the first 25 pages so far, but I'm already laughing and finding some interesting things we can discuss, so I hope you join us in reading this book. For more info, check out Amazon.

Using the Facebook Discussion forums in our group was the top choice of where to discuss the book online, so I'll post some questions about the book in the discussions next week.

Also, in order to find the best time for us to meet in mid-December, PLEASE FILL OUT THIS DOODLE POLL.

Happy hour at MN Library Association Conference!

Hello, all,

Since I now work for Metronet, the library multitype that started this Early-Career Librarian group, I am going to fully take it over and create events and meetings for us on a regular basis. To start, I need to know more about what you all hope to get out of a group like this, so what better than to talk this over at another happy hour?

The Minnesota Library Association Conference is in St. Cloud next week, so let's have a happy hour on:

Metronet will provide some appetizers at the beginning of the evening, but the drinks are on you. And even though this is a Metronet-sponsored event, everyone is welcome, so please pass this onto any early-career librarian you know who might be interested.

You know, Ann, I believe you sent me an email about this, and I never responded? Is that true? No, never!

Anyway, I think this gaming night at MLA sounds great! What sort of help do you need in getting this set up??

And, with how busy this past semester was I never got a chance to set up something with the Early Career Librarians. Jennifer and I talked about it a little bit at our happy hour at the Library Technology Conference, which is where the MnDOT library tour came from, but beyond that we haven't met again.

In your past experience, what do you think about summer meetings? Good? Bad?

It seems like a lot of people want info on professional development, and I think that sounds like a good idea, too, so do you know any other wise librarians like yourself who would be willing to gather with us and give us some info about professional development, publishing, etc.? Any guidance we have in that area is always appreciated.

MnDot Library Open House

Mn/DOT Library is having an Open House on Tuesday, April 21 from 10-3, and we invite you to come and help us honor National Library Week. This would be a great opportunity to see our physical space, meet our staff members, and enjoy some treats and refreshments.

We will have various displays featuring our transportation library networks and our global partners in information exchange, a historical timeline of Mn/DOT library highlights, some fun facts about the work done by our library staff, and a display that celebrates Earth Day/recycling and Mn/DOT's green initiatives summed up in recently published research reports.

Bernie Arseneau, our Division Director, and Nick Thompson, our Office Director, are planning to make an appearance around 11, so if you would like to meet them, try to come at 11, otherwise, please come at any time that works into your schedule.

How about an "intergenerational" game night at MLA. Board games, Wii (we can borrow Melsa's), snacks...Would be fun. Opportunity to socialize and get to know each other. Ken Berenger, MLA President, said he would attend.

We haven't met in awhile (I'm working on putting together a more official non-happy hour event, so bear with me), but since many of us may be attending the Midwest Library Technology Conference next week at Macalester, how about another happy hour?

I second the nod for suggestions on getting things published. I also would love to have something about suggestions for things we should be doing in terms of professional development.

(And, on a side note, for those of you who did attend our happy hour at MLA, I was right Ann Walker Smalley, Wilson Phillips is comprised of the daughters of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys: "Wilsons are the daughters of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, while Phillips' parents are John Phillips and Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas.")

Hi LeAnn,
I wasn't able to make it to the MLA happy hour but I am interested in other events with the group. A few suggestions I have might be something on getting published, working with the other generations of librarians, and what other librarians are working on/having success with. I am also interested in instruction/info lit issues but this might be to focused.

Thanks to all who were able to come to the MLA happy hour! It was great seeing some of you again and meeting some of you for the first time.

And, if some of you have never heard of this group yet, I added your name to the list or I was given your name by someone who thought you would make a great addition to our group. The Early-Career Librarians Interest Group was started by Ann Walker Smalley, Director of Metronet, in an effort to "help you and others like you develop that all-important peer network to share ideas, advance your careers, and make new friends. A mission of Metronet is to provide networking opportunities for library staff in the metro area through programming and events."

I want to encourage you all to join the WebJunction group - MN Early Career Librarians: http://www.webjunction.org/740/resources/overview. We will be uploading discussion items and documents from our meetings there, so it's a great place for all of us to keep in touch.

As for our meetings, these happy hours have been really great, but let's move beyond them and have some programming or discussions at future meetings. So, what sort of ideas or suggestions do you have for our future meetings?
