Charging for DVD rentals
4:51 PM EDT 4/2/09
Our library currently doesn't charge any fee for renting DVD's. With the economy the way it is, the adminstration is considering doing this but would like to know what other libraries do before they consider it. So if you could share your experiences with us, we would greatly appreciate it.

At the Carmel Clay Public Library, we currently have about 13,000 DVDs (8,200 of them in the adult AV collection, the rest in Children's). We don't charge for DVD check-out (but we don't charge for anything else either). We do not have limits on how many DVDs a person may check out at a time. They circulate for one week with $1/day overdue fines. That's considerably higher than our usual 10-cent/day overdue fines on other formats, but it helps ensure that the DVDs are returned promptly. Our DVDs may be renewed once, and patrons may also place holds on them, though we have a total hold limit of 25 items (any format).

At Johnson County Public Library we do not charge for DVD rentals. We allow patrons to check out 7 DVDs for 7 days and charge $1.00 per day for overdue items. Patrons can renew DVDs up to 4 times if no one else has placed a hold on the title. We allow patrons 25 holds.

The Lebanon Public Library does not charge for DVD rentals. We allow 10 DVD's to go out at a time for 7 days. We do not allow renewals for the first 6 months on new materials and only one renew on all others. We allow holds but only 20 per card. We have a .25/day late fee for all materials in the building. We did recently "sell" our VHS fiction tapes and made about $1300 for the Friends.
