A few words about these computers before you receive them
12:39 PM EDT 10/2/08
In setting up the first 20+ computers I've had some thoughts about them that I'd like to share with you along with one reminder.

The reminder: These are meant to be "public access" computers as required by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. They have not been set up to be used by staff on a regular basis. (i.e. not keeping anything saved on the hard drive.) The staff login is available to allow you to control the overall security of the computer along with general maintainable.

The thoughts:

A lot of thought and discussion went into deciding how the security was to be set up on these computers. The ideal was to balance usability with security. Although the security might seem a bit overwhelming at first, it will get easier in the long run.

I've also tried to anticipate how these machines will be used. You however will have a much better idea of what your patrons need and want to do. Because of that you will probably need to install some other software or create some icons on the public desktop. This is where you're going to run into the security the most. My best suggestion is to attempt to make any changes/additions you need to make all at once, shortly after you receive the computer, so as to avoid needing to deal with the security multiple times.

Lastly, I've probably missed something in setting up these first computers. In fact, I know that there's at least one difference between the first nine and the second nine but you shouldn't notice it at all. Because of this I'll be putting on hold setting up any additional computers for about a week to see what questions and comments come back from the first two groups. This way, as issues arise I can address them and prevent them from happening in future shipments.

So, I just ask that everyone have a little patience with these new computers at first. I encourage you to ask any questions you may have here in the discussion board so we can all help each other.

Thanks!
Michael
