Current funding for the Gi21 program ended on September 30, 2008 and the information found in the program modules is up-to-date as of December 31, 2008.  To facilitate use of the modules from now till the future continuation of the program, new documents can be posted from each module and sub-module main pages and the community discussions are open.  However the main module pages and documents will not be updated.  If you have any questions, please contact Kirsten Clark.

Environmental Science is the study of our environment encompassing the history of our earth with the interactions between the physical, biological and chemical components of the environment.  The goals of environmental science are to monitor the quality of the environment, conduct research to identify hazards that affect people, wildlife and the environment, and to design mechanisms to eliminate these hazards and protect the environment.  A great portion of enviromental science is conducted under the auspice of the U. S. federal government.  Due to the interdisciplinary nature of environmental science, many different federal agencies are involved in and produce information relating to environmental science.

There are over 25,000 full text electronic reports and this collection continues to grow. The National Environmental Publications Internet Site (NEPIS) was incorporated into NSCEP in January 2007. NSCEP provides search and browse options. http://www.epa.gov/nscep/
  • EnviroFacts Data Warehouse - "A single point of access to select U.S. EPA environmental data. This website provides access to several EPA databases to provide you with information about environmental activities that may affect air, water, and land anywhere in the United States." http://www.epa.gov/enviro/
  • EPA Alphabetical Listing of Projects and Programs - Provides alternate way to access Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) information by links to EPA projects and programs. http://www.epa.gov/epahome/abcpgram.htm
  • Integrated Risk Information System : IRIS - "IRIS is a compilation of electronic reports on specific substances found in the environment and their potential to cause human health effects. IRIS was initially developed for EPA staff in response to a growing demand for consistent information on substances for use in risk assessments, decision-making and regulatory activities. The information in IRIS is intended for those without extensive training in toxicology, but with some knowledge of health sciences." http://www.epa.gov/iris/
  • HazDat Database - A "scientific and administrative database developed to provide access to information on the release of hazardous substances from Superfund sites or from emergency events and on the effects of hazardous substances on the health of human populations." http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/hazdat.html
  • WINDandSEA: The Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences Internet Guide - This guide was built by NOAA librarians to help those concerned with oceanic and atmospheric issues. The over 1,000 selected links to science and policy sites organized by topic and alphabetically within topic. Many of these links are outside the NOAA website. http://www.lib.noaa.gov/docs/wind/windandsea.html
  • ToxSeek – "A meta-search engine that enables simultaneous searching of many different information resources on the World Wide Web. The ToxSeek user interface allows selection of resources from a wide range of authoritative resources." http://toxseek.nlm.nih.gov/toxseek/
  • Science Accelerator - "Science Accelerator is a portal searching searches vast scientific and technical resources, including R&D results, project descriptions, accomplishments, and more, via resources made available by OSTI. This database was developed by the Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) within the Department of Energy (DOE) and is available as a free public service." http://www.scienceaccelerator.gov/
  • Energy Citations Database - The Energy Citations Database (ECD) "provides free access to over 2.3 million science research citations from 1948 through the present, with continued growth through regular updates. There are over 150,000 electronic documents, primarily from 1994 forward, available via the database. ECD includes scientific and technical research results in disciplines of interest to DOE such as chemistry, physics, materials, environmental science, geology, engineering, mathematics, climatology, oceanography, computer science and related disciplines. It includes bibliographic citations to report literature, conference papers, journal articles, books, dissertations, and patents." http://www.osti.gov/energycitations/
  • DOE Information Bridge - "The DOE Information Bridge provides free public access to full-text documents and bibliographic citations of Department of Energy (DOE) research report literature. Documents are primarily from 1994 forward and were produced by DOE, the DOE contractor community, and/or DOE grantees. Legacy documents are added as they become available in electronic format. The subject areas included are physics, chemistry, materials, biology, environmental sciences, energy technologies, engineering, computer and information science, renewable energy, and other topics of interest related to DOE's mission." http://www.osti.gov/bridge/
  • DOE Data Explorer (DDE) - DDE contains scientific research data, such as computer simulations, numeric data files, figures and plots, interactive maps, multimedia, and scientific images - generated in the course of DOE-sponsored research in various science disciplines. http://www.osti.gov/dataexplorer/
  • National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) - Research - "The National Center for Atmospheric Research's (NCAR) activities as an integrator, innovator, and community builder are contributing to the development of a predictive Earth system science that can help sustain Earth’s habitability, improve environmental quality, safeguard human health, reduce the impacts of natural disasters, and increase economic productivity." NCAR's research website links to areas of research - climate, meteorology/weather, societal impacts, pollution & air chemistry, whole earth system, sun & space weather. http://www.ncar.ucar.edu/research/
  • U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) - Electronic Reading Room - "The mission of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is to enable the nation to safely use radioactive materials for beneficial civilian purposes while ensuring that people and the environment are protected. The NRC regulates commercial nuclear power plants and other uses of nuclear materials, such as in nuclear medicine, through licensing, inspection and enforcement of its requirements.. The Electronic Reading Room website contains information and the documents that are most pertinent to NRC regulatory activities. Many of the documents are in Basic References or Document Collections sections of the website. The rest are available either from our record retrieval system, ADAMS, or from our Public Document Room found on the website as well." http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm.html
