Guide to Education Statistics The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) (http://nces.ed.gov/) is the primary federal agency for the collection and analysis of information relating to education. The center is part of the U.S. Department of Education. The NCES website has a wealth of information and is a great one-stop-shop for education data. They collect statistics on all levels of education, from pre-K through graduate school. Subjects include assessment, violence in schools, financial data, school and school district demographics, libraries, early childhood education, and many more. The key to finding information within the National Center for Education Statistics website is using the tabs in the blue menu bar near the top of the page. Choose from:
Major Statistical Publications for Education: Condition of Education, National Center for Education Statistics -- summarizes important developments and trends in education. Indicators are collected in five main areas: (1) participation in education; (2) learner outcomes; (3) student effort and educational progress; (4) the contexts of elementary and secondary education; and (5) the contexts of postsecondary education. (http://nces.ed.gov/programs/coe/) Digest of Education Statistics, National Center for Education Statistics -- a compilation of statistical information covering education in the U.S. from pre-kindergarten through graduate school. The Digest contains data on a variety of topics, including the number of schools and colleges, teachers, enrollments, and graduates, in addition to educational attainment, finances, and federal funds for education, libraries, and international comparisons. (http://nces.ed.gov/programs/digest/) Indicators of School Crime and Safety(a joint publication from the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the National Center for Education Statistics) - The report examines crime occurring in school as well as on the way to and from school. Data on crime at school from the perspectives of students, teachers, principals, and the general population is included.
