What you can find at the USAID
This is a guide to the resources available from the U.S. Agency for International Development.

USAID Library

The USAID Library serves as a point of access to the body of knowledge relating to sustainable development and USAID information for individuals interested in the field of international development. With a particular focus on international sustainable development and economic assistance, the library's collection supports the Agency's development efforts in its strategic objective areas: democracy and governance; economic growth; education and training; environment and agriculture; humanitarian assistance; and population, health, and nutrition.

The library includes many electronic resources that are accessible to the public through the library catalog. To find these electronic resources, use the Power Search option and then limit "type" to e-resources.

US Green Book (also in pdf)

U.S. Overseas Loans and Grants, Obligations and Loan Authorizations: The Greenbook shows a complete historical record of U.S. foreign aid to the rest of the world. The Greenbook reports all U.S.-government authorized loans and grants for each fiscal year from 1946 to 2005, and reports the assistance by purpose and by country. From this site users can create their own tables and reports through selecting recipient countries, years, and type of aid program.

Data is available in either historical or constant dollars:

  • The historical dollar series looks at current-dollar values actually obligated or lent in that year.
  • The constant dollar price series converts each year's loans and obligations amounts into 2005 dollar equivalents. The constant-dollar series allows you to evaluate, on a comparable basis, loans and obligations that occurred in different time periods.

Resources supporting the use of the Greenbook (also available via About the Greenbook):

USAID Congressional Budget Justification

USAID budget justification to Congress reflects the Administration's program and budget request for bilateral foreign economic assistance appropriations. It is basically a report outlining all USAID programs, objectives and results for that particular fiscal year. Reports are available on the website for the last 10 years.

USAID's Development Experience Clearinghouse (DEC)

Search the Development Experience System (DEXS), USAID's online database of agency-funded technical and program-related documents, where you can download USAID documents in PDF format for free. The database includes a Help Page to aid with searching.

USAID Guide to Historical Research (pdf)
