"The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is an honorific society of distinguished scholars engaged in scientific and engineering
research, dedicated to the furtherance of science and technology and to their use for the general welfare." The Academy was
originally founded by President Lincoln in 1863. Due to the complex scientific issues since that period, the Academy currently
encompasses the National Research Council (added in 1916), National Academy of Engineering (added in 1964), and the Institute
of Medicine (added in 1970). "Collectively, the four organizations are known as the National Academies."
The National Academy of Sciences webpage offers information on a wide variety of scientific and technical topics and links
to NAS publications. Most of the recent publications are available in full-text, but some require a fee to access. Specifically
the webpage provides information about the Academy (including background about the Academy itself, membership, nominations
and elections, awards, publications, and NAS studies) located on the upper left hand side of the webpage. Internal NAS links
to specific topics and exhibitions/cultural programs as well as external links to scientific websites selected by the Academy
all located under Activities on the middle left hand side of the webpage. The center of the webpage includes Highlights and
News when one is at the Home location on the NAS website. The center generally provides more information about the links located
on the left hand side of the webpage as they are selected.
