Overview

The world’s largest library has an equally huge electronic collection. Main gateway headings include collections for kids and families, librarians, publishers, researchers, teachers and visitors. General information about the Library and additional library resources are other portals.

 

General Information

A link on the left side of the main page connects you to a Calendar of Events at the Library including Public Tours, Film Screenings, Lectures and Symposiums, as well as contact information for various Library services.

Changing displays are contained in Library Highlights in the center of the main page. Current events, monthly celebrations and a guide are examples of pathfinders into the collection. The sitemap gives a good visual relationship of the Library with many links.

News from the Library is a comprehensive link to news, events, features and a daily calendar of highlights at the Library.

Popular Topics and Collections, also on the main page, are shortcuts to frequently visited topics or collections.

A button at the top of the main page links you to Digital Collections which can be viewed online.

RSS feeds, podcasts, blogs and email updates are ways to keep up with the Library’s activity.  Links to these are available at the lower left of the main page.

Teachers A collection of lesson plans called the Learning Page for teachers in the American Memory project.

Visitors is an important tool for planning a visit in person. It contains maps, directions, hours, etc.

American Memory is a dazzling collection of free and open access to audio, video and image documents. Topics are organized by a facet of American life, such as environment, government, sports and technology. Browsing is by time period, place or keyword in a collection. There is an index of all the collections.

The Research Centers link under More Library Resources leads you to other collections such as   the American Folklife Center, International collections, the Geography and Map collection, and Rare Book and Special Collections.

The Global Gateway links to multilingual resources on world cultures. It presents a collaboration of digital libraries from countries around the world and a listing of links to the searchable collection of LOC and other international digital collections.

The Veterans History Projectcollects first hand accounts of wars and conflicts from WWI to present day Afghanistan and Iraq. Stories come from U.S. veterans as well as all types of support people such as USO workers and other volunteers. Stories can be browsed and searched by a name, by war/military branch, state of residence or by ethnicity.  

 

THOMAS

THOMAS is the official portal for free public information from Congress. Links to current and historical legislative information offer special features, current activities and current congressional activities. Search the current Congress by bill text, number and sponsor.

Government Resources is an index to links for many official and unofficial webpages. Included are the Senate and the House of Representatives, as well as sites outside the Library and historical and pages for general information.

For Teachers offers legislative resources for classrooms and information for educators at all levels.
