This group of exercises uses a variety of primary Health sites.

There has recently been a lot in the news about Eli Lilly’s drug Zyprexa.  Where can I learn more about that drug?

  1. Go to the HealthFinder site at http://www.healthfinder.gov.
  2. Click on the Drug Database link in the lower left side of the page.
  3. Read the information on the following page closely and click “I Accept” or “I Decline”.
  4. If you click “I Accept”, the next page will include a list of drugs that begin with the letter A.
  5. Click on the letter “Z” at the top of the page.
  6. Scroll down the page and click on “Zyprexa”. 

How many boys in the U.S. between 13 and 20 were hospitalized by non-fatal dog bites between 2003 and 2005? 

  1. Go to the CDC website at http://www.cdc.gov.
  2. Click on the “Injury and Violence” link under “Health & Safety Topics”.
  3. Under “Key Resources” in the right column, choose “WISQARS (Injury Data Reporting).
  4. Choose “Nonfatal Injury Reports” in the right column.
  5. Choose “Data from 2001 and later”.
  6. Choose report options to query the data system and then click “Submit Request”.

What Medicare Prescription Drug Plans and Health Plans are available in Summit County, Colorado?  Which Prescription Drug Plan has the lowest monthly premium?  Which has the highest?  Are you any Special Needs Plans available for residents of Summit County? 

  1. Go to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services website at http://www.hhs.gov.
  2. Click on “Aging” link in the left column.
  3. From the “Topics on this Page” section, click on “Medicare and Medicaid”.
  4. Click on the simple “Medicare” link (there are others that include the word).  This should take you to the www.medicare.gov site. 
  5. Choose the “Learn More About Plans in Your Area” link.
  6. Select Colorado and click Continue; then choose Summit and click.
  7. The next page will show a list of plans.  To sort the list of Prescription Drug Plans by monthly premium, click on the “Monthly Premium” column heading. 

What sort of disease outbreaks have there been in Afghanistan since the U.S. began its operations there in October of 2001. 

  1. Go to the World Health Organization’s website at http://www.who.int
  2. Click on the Countries link in the left column. 
  3. Choose Afghanistan from the list of countries.
  4. Under the heading CONTEXT, click on the Disease outbreaks link.

Alternatively:

  1. Go to the World Health Organization’s website at http://www.who.int.
  2. Click on the WHO sites link in the left column.
  3. Scroll down and choose Disease outbreak news.
  4. Under the heading “ARCHIVES”, click on the “Disease outbreaks by country” link.

What sort of information can I find out about Avian Flu?  What does my state plan to do if there is an outbreak of bird flu?

  1. Go to http://www.hhs.gov (Dept. of Health & Human Services)
  2. Click on Disasters & Emergencies.
  3. Click on Disaster and Emergency Preparedness and then PandemicFlu.gov. 
  4. Choose the State & Local Planning tab from the top or the Where You Live link to the left. 

How many cases have been reported around the world over the last few years? 

  1. Go to http://www.who.in (World Health Organization)
  2. Click on Health topics in the left column.
  3. Scroll down and choose Avian Influenza. 
  4. From this page, either click on Avian influenza under the RELATED SITES heading in the center or the Full coverage link under AVIAN INFLUENZA heading in the right column. 
  5. Look for the Number of human cases archives link under the ARCHIVES section.

What should people traveling internationally know about avian flu? 

  1. Go to http://www.cdc.gov (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
  2. Look for the Avian Influenza link in the main body of the page.  If it is not there, click on the A-Z Index at the top of the page and scroll down to the Avian Influenza link. 
  3. Click on the Travelers link under Information for Specific Groups. 

Alternatively:

  1. Go to http://www.hhs.gov (Dept. of Health & Human Services).
  2. Click on Disasters & Emergencies in the left column. 
  3. Click on Disaster and Emergency Preparedness and then PandemicFlu.gov.
  4. Choose the Travel link in the left column. 

Is a vaccine for Avian Flu under development?

  1. Go to http://www.cdc.gov (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
  2. Look for the Avian Influenza link in the main body of the page.  If it is not there, click on the A-Z Index at the top of the page and scroll down to the Avian Influenza link. 
  3. Click on the Prevention link under the Specific Topics section. 
  4. Choose the link for Avian Infuenza Vaccines. 

Where can I find a good overview and basic facts about Avian Flu?

  1. Go to http://www.cdc.gov (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
  2. Look for the Avian Influenza link in the main body of the page.  If it is not there, click on the A-Z Index at the top of the page and scroll down to the Avian Influenza link.
  3. This page provides a good overview and information links under the What You Should Know section.

There was some news a couple years ago about a new “Food Pyramid”.  Where can I find more information about that?  How much and what types of foods should I be eating? 

  1. Go to http://www.health.gov.
  2. Under Special Initiatives, click on Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005.
