DOE Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI)

http://www.osti.gov/ Mission

-http://www.osti.gov/about/mission There are many different links to websites and databases.  We’ll look at just a few within the context of oil shale.  The most comprehensive are the Energy Citations and DOE Information Bridge.

Energy Citations Database

We’ll start with the Energy Citations Database “Science Accelerator” pull down “Energy Citations Database”

--http://www.osti.gov/energycitations/  2.3 million citations, 1943-, but only 179,000 full text. Type “”Oil Shale”” and “Search”

--http://www.osti.gov/energycitations/basicsearch.jsp Over 8,000 matches. Click on Fielded Search (at top)

---http://www.osti.gov/energycitations/advancedsearch.jsp Now over 5,000 back one

--http://www.osti.gov/energycitations/advancedsearch.jsp  Add “Colorado” to oil shale and “Search

---http://www.osti.gov/energycitations/advancedsearch.jsp Ah.  Sort by “Publication Date” “Descending” but only a few are full text, and 1996 is most recent.  You will have to experiment to discover what works best for a given search.  Go back, try a new search on just “oil shale” as a subject and publication date “from” “2005” and “search”

----http://www.osti.gov/energycitations/advancedsearch.jsp Now there is new material, though only a few in full text.  Go back (to main page) and choose “Science Accelerator” pull down Information Bridge

Information Bridge.  Full text documents from 1991 forward and produced directly or indirectly by DOE

http://www.osti.gov/bridge/  Try “oil shale colorado and click “search”

-http://www.osti.gov/bridge/basicsearch.jsp Wow.  Over 2,000 full text matches.  Click on the first pdf

--http://www.osti.gov/bridge/servlets/purl/615646-x3HoB8/webviewable/  Go back one

-http://www.osti.gov/bridge/basicsearch.jsp Click on “Fielded Search” at top

--http://www.osti.gov/bridge/advancedsearch.jsp  Try “oil shale colorado” as a subject

---http://www.osti.gov/bridge/advancedsearch.jsp Now we get just seven references.  Again, you have to experiment.  Let’s try one more “fielded search” As a subject, “Salton Sea  (My thesis area)

----http://www.osti.gov/bridge/advancedsearch.jsp I wish I had known about this when I did my MS in geology, this was my subject area.  These are not in GeoRef.  Click on “Site Map

-----http://www.osti.gov/bridge/sitemap.jsp  Click on “Alerts Help

------http://www.osti.gov/bridge/alerthelp.jsp If you register you can save searches and be notified when new material is available based on those searches. Click on OSTI at left of bar below header

http://www.osti.gov/index  Click on “Science Accelerator

-http://www.scienceaccelerator.gov/ Click on key resources.

--http://www.scienceaccelerator.gov/resourcedescriptions  This is a federated search engine that searches across 10 databases including the Energy Citations Database and the Information Bridge.  From here you may also click to search a particular database.  At top of database type “salton sea” and click “search

---http://www.scienceaccelerator.gov/dsa/resultList.html?ssid=-3e39c363:11ba4429556:3eaf&startPosition=0&refresh=true Now have over 600 references.  Wow. Click on “Advanced Search” at top.

----http://www.scienceaccelerator.gov/dsa/search.html  Notice you can choose the databases to search, but have far fewer search options, for example, no subject.  That is the nature of Federated Search Engines.

Let’s look at one more database,

Science.Gov

http://www.science.gov Click on “Energy & Energy Conservation

-http://www.science.gov/browse/w_121.htm Type “oil shale” and hit “Begin Search

http://www.science.gov/scigov/resultList.html?ssid=3e4c817c:11ba4892846:fe5&startPosition=0&refresh=true   Note nearly 1500 references, Note sources from places not searched earlier.  Also note “Alert” available.  Enter colorado” in “Refine Results”

http://www.science.gov/scigov/resultList.html?ssid=3e4c817c:11ba4892846:156f&startPosition=0&refresh=true  Now only about 150. Again, notice varied results.  Also, no subject searching.
