Overview of Education
This page provides an overview of and links to the key Federal Education Agencies. It also provides links to State Education Agencies.

Federal Education Agencies:

The Department of Education is the main source for educational information.  The guides below cover both this department and other lesser known sources.

The U.S. Department of Education, is the main source of information on materials related to education from the federal government. The guides in this module highlight resources from the Department of Education and related agencies on major issues in education. The guides focus on resources from the federal government, however, important links to state information for the five-state area have also been included.

The mission of the Department of Education is "to promote student achievement by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access." They create national policies for education, collect data on school sytems across the country, and conduct research on educational practices. Their website contains resources for administrators, educators and students.

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) is the primary federal agency for the collection and analysis of information relating to education. The center is part of the U.S. Department of Education. The NCES website has a wealth of information and is a great one-stop-shop for education data. They collect statistics on all levels of education, from pre-K through graduate school. Subjects include assessment, violence in schools, financial data, school and school district demographics, libraries, early childhood education, and many more.

State Education Agencies:

Arizona Department of Education

Colorado Department of Education

New Mexico Public Education Department

Utah State Office of Education

Wyoming Department of Education

For information on the other fifty states, the Education Resource Organizations Directory (EROD) of the U.S. Department of Education has a very extensive listing of organizations, including the 50 state education departments.
