The judicial branch and the various federal courts play a key role in administering justice, but the system can be difficult to figure out. This guide provides some assistance.

The Federal Judicial Center is the educational and research agency for the federal courts. The Educational Programs & Materials section contains useful orientation information concerning the federal courts system. The History of the Federal Judiciary is an online book that includes a biographical directory of federal judges, a history of each of the federal courts, summaries of several notable federal trials throughout history, an overview of judicial administration and organization, a pictorial survey of federal courthouses, and a timeline of landmark judicial legislation.

This site serves as a switchboard to the federal courts, with links out to the Supreme Court, the various Courts of Appeals, U.S. District Courts, and Bankruptcy Courts.

National Institute of Corrections (NIC)

The NIC is an agency under the Federal Bureau of Prisons that was created by Congress to assist state and local governments.  Its scope is quite broad for such a small team.  Provides technical assistance, training, resource development, and library services.
