Civics and Citizenship Study Materials Educational materials that allow immigrants to learn more about U.S. history and government as they prepare for the naturalization
test: flash cards, civics and history lessons, the Citizens’ Almanac and a pocket Declaration of Independence and Constitution
of the United States.
Includes a web-based tool entitled, U.S. Civics and Citizenship Online: Resource Center for Instructors. These are a collection of online resources not necessarily from Government agencies to aid in instruction. There are two
sections:
Both contain: Library Services for Immigrants: A Report on Current Practices (467KB PDF) is a report identifying current practices and suggesting ideas for libraries offering services to immigrants.
The “Welcome to the United States: a guide for new immigrants” in various languages. A fairly substantial document – the English
version is 112 pages – covering rights, getting settled, education and childcare, emergencies, learning about the US, becoming
a citizen, a map, and holidays.
Publications include background information on the political and social conditions in a country and particularly the human
rights situation, as well as other asylum resources.
Immigration law has a number of highly technical terms that may not mean the same thing to the average reader. U.S. Immigration Legal History Provides a compilation of federal immigration and naturalization statutes and an overview of the legislative history of immigration. |
