Federal Depository Library Conference Presentation

A one-hour overview of the Government Information in the 21st Century project was presented at the Fall Federal Depository Library Conference by Kirsten Clark, University of Minnesota and former Gi21 Project Manager; Tim Byrne, Head Government Publications, University of Colorado and former Gi21 Project Principal Investigator; Joe Anderson, Content Manager, WebJunction; Jennie Gerke, Electronic Government Information Librarian, University of Colorado; and Debra S. Van Tassel, Gi21 Project Manager.  The presentation was attended by over 75 federal depository librarians from all over the country.

Changes in Grant Administration

Tim Byrne stepped down as the Head of Government Publications, University of Colorado after 23 years of service.  Tim continues in the government information field, however, now working for the Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.  Since the University of Colorado requires that Principal Investigators for grants be CU faculty, Tim could no longer continue as the PI for the Government Information in the 21st Century grant.

Starting November 1, 2007, the new Faculty Director and Head of Government Publications, University of Colorado and GI21 Principal Investigator is Margaret (Peggy) Jobe.

Peggy received her MA in Librarianship from the University of Denver in 1985. From 1986 to 1995 she was the Reference/Interlibrary Loan/Internet Instruction Librarian for the Central Colorado Library System. In 1995 she joined the Government Publications Library at the University of Colorado at Boulder as the International Documents Librarian. She also maintained the Government Publications Library website--described by Bruce Maxwell in How to access the federal government on the Internet as one of the "best places to start" your search for government publications. With Debbie Hollis, she created the award-winning "Colorado by the Numbers" online statistical abstract. Her published research includes work on access to government information, the Toxics Release Inventory, environmental information, and a brief history of the Census population counts for Native Americans. After serving as the judge for international documents for several years, she chaired the GODORT Notable Documents Panel from 2000-2003. After achieving tenure in 2002, she became the Faculty Director for the Gemmill Engineering Library at CU Boulder. She's excited to be returning to Government Publications.

Jennie Gerke, Electronic Government Information Librarian, University of Colorado has been named the co-PI for the Government Information in the 21st Century grant.  Jennie has been involved in the project from the beginning and brings a great deal of experience and expertise to the project.  Jennie was a key presenter at the Train-the-Trainer Conference in June and our presentation to the Fall 2007 FDLP Conference.  She also has contributed actively to the development of several modules including Demographics, History & Genealogy, and International Relations.  Her technical skills have been invaluable to the project.
